Episode Eight:The Distance That Revealed Everything

1125 Words
The days after the confession felt unreal. Not in a dramatic way, there were no loud confrontations, no public scenes, no explosive arguments. Instead, everything became… quiet. Too quiet. Audrey Belle went back to class. She took notes. She answered questions. She smiled when people spoke to her. From the outside, nothing had changed. But inside, Everything had. Damian Reed didn’t call. He didn’t text. He didn’t show up outside her door like he used to. And Audrey understood why. He needed space. Time to think. Time to decide. Still… the silence hurt. More than she expected. Because for the first time in years, She didn’t know where she stood with him. Lina Bailey disappeared too. No messages. No late-night calls. No sudden visits. It wasn’t anger. Audrey would have known how to handle anger. This was something else. Distance. Intentional. Necessary. And that hurt in a different way. Three days passed. Then five. Then a week. By the eighth day, Audrey found herself sitting alone at their usual spot under the acacia tree. The same place where everything had once felt easy. Now it felt like a memory. She traced her fingers along the rough surface of the bench, exhaling slowly. “You always come here when you’re thinking.” She froze. That voice, She turned. Damian. He stood a few steps away, hands in his pockets, looking… different. Not physically. But something in him had shifted. Like he had been somewhere far away, and was only now returning. “Habit,” Audrey said softly. He nodded and walked over, sitting beside her. Not too close. Not too far. Just… careful. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then, “I saw Lina,” he said. Audrey’s heart skipped. “You did?” “Yesterday,” he replied. “We talked.” Her chest tightened. “And?” He let out a slow breath. “She’s leaving.” The words hit harder than Audrey expected. “Leaving?” she repeated. “She got accepted into a program in Douala,” he said. “It starts soon.” Audrey stared ahead, trying to process it. “She didn’t tell me,” she murmured. “She said she would,” Damian replied gently. “She just needed time first.” Audrey nodded slowly. That made sense. It hurt, but it made sense. “She’s… strong,” Damian added after a moment. Audrey let out a small, sad smile. “She always has been.” Silence settled again. But this time, it wasn’t heavy. It was reflective. “What did she say?” Audrey asked quietly. Damian hesitated. Then, “She told me to be honest,” he said. “With her. With you. With myself.” Audrey’s chest tightened slightly. “That sounds like Lina,” she said. He nodded. “She also said something else,” he added. Audrey glanced at him. “What?” He looked down at his hands, then back up at her. “She said she thinks I already know what I feel.” Audrey’s breath caught. The air between them shifted. Subtly. But unmistakably. “And do you?” she asked softly. The question hung there. This was it. The answer she had been waiting for. The one that could either heal or break everything all over again. Damian didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he leaned back slightly, looking up at the sky through the branches of the tree. “I tried to think about it logically,” he said. “To figure it out the way I usually do.” Audrey stayed quiet. “But it’s not logical,” he continued. “It never was.” He turned his head to look at her. “And that’s when I realized something.” Her heart started pounding. “What?” she whispered. “I never had to try with you.” The words were simple. But they landed deep. “What do you mean?” she asked. “I mean…” he exhaled. “With you, everything just exists. It always has. I don’t think about what to say or how to act. I don’t wonder where I stand. I just… know.” Audrey’s chest tightened. “Isn’t that just friendship?” she asked, though her voice wavered slightly. He shook his head slowly. “No,” he said. “Not anymore.” Silence. But not empty silence. This one was full. Of realization. Of truth. Of something finally coming into focus. “When you pulled away,” Damian continued, “I felt it immediately. Like something was missing. And I didn’t understand why at first.” He looked at her more intensely now. “But then I started asking myself the questions I should have asked a long time ago.” Audrey held her breath. “And?” she asked. “And I realized…” he paused. Just for a second. Just enough to make her heart race. “…you’re not just my best friend, Audrey.” The words sent a quiet wave through her. “I haven’t seen you that way for a while,” he added. “I just didn’t let myself think about it.” Her voice was barely audible now. “Why?” “Because it was easier,” he admitted. “Because what we had was already important. And I didn’t want to risk losing it.” Audrey’s eyes filled with tears. “And now?” she asked. He didn’t hesitate this time. “Now I think not saying anything was the bigger risk.” Her breath caught. The moment stretched between them. Fragile. Powerful. Real. “I don’t want to hurt Lina,” he continued. “And I hate that things happened this way.” “I know,” Audrey said softly. “But I can’t ignore this anymore either,” he said. She nodded. Because she understood. More than anyone. “So what happens now?” she asked. He looked at her. Not uncertain. Not confused. Just… honest. “That depends on you too,” he said. Her heart skipped. “Me?” “I’m not going to rush this,” he said. “Not after everything. But I also don’t want to pretend this isn’t real.” Audrey felt something shift inside her. Something calmer. Stronger. “I don’t want to pretend either,” she said. A small smile formed on his face. The kind she hadn’t seen in days. “Good,” he said. They didn’t kiss. They didn’t rush into anything. Instead, They sat there. Side by side. Closer than before. Not touching. But no longer distant. For the first time since everything changed, It didn’t feel like they were losing something. It felt like they were finally understanding it.
