The hardest part about telling the truth isn’t the words.
It’s everything you stand to lose once they’re spoken.
Audrey Belle understood that now.
She had spent weeks convincing herself that silence was safer, that if she kept her feelings buried deep enough, they would eventually fade, or at least hurt less.
But they hadn’t.
They had grown.
Quietly. Steadily. Unstoppably.
And now, they were demanding to be seen.
The next morning, Audrey didn’t go to class.
It wasn’t like her.
She was the responsible one. The dependable one. The one who always showed up.
But today,
Today, she needed space.
Time to think.
Time to decide.
She sat by her window, watching students pass by below, their lives moving forward in ways that felt distant from her own.
Her phone buzzed.
She ignored it.
Then it buzzed again.
And again.
Finally, with a sigh, she reached for it.
Damian: Where are you?
Damian: You missed class.
Damian: Audrey, this isn’t funny.
Her chest tightened.
She typed, then deleted.
Typed again.
Then finally,
Audrey: I’m fine.
The reply came instantly.
Damian: You don’t sound fine.
She stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
Damian: I’m coming over.
Her heart skipped.
No.
She wasn’t ready.
But before she could respond,
There was a knock at her door.
“Audrey.”
His voice.
Right outside.
Too soon.
Too close.
She stood frozen for a moment, her pulse racing.
Then,
Another knock.
“Audrey, open the door.”
She walked slowly toward it, her hand trembling slightly as she reached for the handle.
This is it.
No more hiding.
No more pretending.
She opened the door.
Damian stood there, worry written all over his face.
The moment he saw her, his expression softened.
“What’s going on?” he asked gently.
She stepped aside, letting him in.
“I told you,” she said quietly. “I’m fine.”
“You’re not,” he replied immediately.
She didn’t argue.
Because she was tired.
Too tired to lie again.
They stood in the middle of her room, the silence between them heavier than anything they had ever shared.
Damian took a step closer.
“Talk to me,” he said.
Her chest tightened.
Say it.
Just say it.
“I don’t think I can keep doing this,” she whispered.
“Doing what?” he asked.
“This,” she said, gesturing vaguely. “Pretending everything is okay when it’s not.”
His brows furrowed. “Then don’t pretend. Just tell me what’s wrong.”
She looked at him.
Really looked at him.
And suddenly, the fear didn’t matter as much as the truth.
“Because it hurts,” she said.
His expression shifted. “What hurts?”
Everything.
“You,” she said.
The word slipped out before she could stop it.
His eyes widened slightly.
“Me?” he repeated.
She nodded, her voice barely steady now. “Watching you… with her. Acting like it doesn’t affect me when it does.”
A long silence followed.
Then,
“Why?” he asked quietly.
And there it was.
The question she could no longer avoid.
Her heart pounded so loudly she could hear it in her ears.
Because I love you.
The words burned in her chest.
This is the moment.
The one she had missed before.
The one she couldn’t miss again.
“I,”
A knock interrupted them.
Sharp.
Unexpected.
Both of them froze.
Then came Lina’s voice.
“Audrey? Are you in there?”
Everything inside Audrey dropped.
No.
Not like this.
Not now.
Damian looked at her, confusion flickering across his face.
“You told her I was coming,” he said.
“I didn’t,” Audrey replied.
The knock came again.
Louder this time.
“Audrey, I know you’re in there.”
The tension in the room snapped tight.
There was no more time.
No more space to think.
Audrey took a shaky breath.
Then walked to the door.
When she opened it, Lina stood there—eyes searching, expression unreadable.
But there was something else too.
Something new.
Something… knowing.
“I had a feeling,” Lina said quietly.
Audrey’s heart stopped.
“What do you mean?” she asked, though her voice betrayed her.
Lina glanced past her, at Damian, standing in the room.
Then back at Audrey.
“I think you should finish what you were about to say,” Lina said.
The words were calm.
But they hit like a storm.
Damian looked between them, confusion deepening.
“What’s going on?” he asked.
Lina didn’t answer him.
Her eyes stayed on Audrey.
Waiting.
Expecting.
Understanding.
And suddenly,
Audrey realized the truth.
Lina already knew.
Maybe not everything.
But enough.
Enough to stand here.
Enough to face it.
Enough to not run.
Tears filled Audrey’s eyes.
“I didn’t mean for this to happen,” she whispered.
“I know,” Lina said softly.
And somehow,
That made it harder.
The room felt smaller now.
Too full of emotions that had nowhere to go.
Damian stepped forward slightly. “Can someone please explain what’s happening?”
Audrey looked at him.
Then at Lina.
Then back at him.
No more hiding.
No more silence.
“I’m in love with you,” she said.
The words came out stronger than she expected.
Clear.
Final.
Irreversible.
Silence.
Complete and total.
Damian stared at her, like the world had just shifted beneath his feet.
Lina closed her eyes briefly.
And Audrey,
Audrey felt everything at once.
Fear.
Relief.
Regret.
Freedom.
Because the truth was finally out.
And nothing would ever be the same again.
