I felt my heart beat faster, my fists clenching at the familiar sting of his manipulative words. I stopped in my tracks, my back still turned to him, but my entire body tense with anger. Cross knew how to push my buttons, how to make me question myself, but I didn’t fall for it this time. “Don’t try to manipulate me, Cross,” I said, my voice shaking with a mixture of fury and exhaustion. "I won’t be swayed by your games anymore. This isn’t about you or your pride. This is about saving Vincent, and I will do whatever it takes to make sure he has a chance at life." I turned to face him, my eyes cold, unyielding. "You’re right about one thing, though. I won’t be able to save him unless I sell the house.
