Chapter Fourteen: The Message in the Dark The quiet that followed the Blood Moon did not last long. By the second night, a tension had settled across Ironclaw territory like a shadow that refused to lift. Patrols moved more frequently through the forest, their movements careful and silent. Even the youngest wolves could feel it. Something was shifting beyond the borders, something patient and deliberate. Nysera stood near the edge of the training grounds, watching the warriors run through defensive drills. The cool evening air brushed against her skin, carrying the familiar scent of pine and damp earth. But beneath it lingered something else, something faint yet unmistakable. Rogue scent. Not fresh. Not distant. Watching. Her fingers brushed lightly against the mark beneath her collarbone. It pulsed once, slow and deliberate. They were close. Behind her, a low voice broke the silence. “You feel it again.” Kael. Nysera turned to see him approaching from the path that led toward the Alpha house. His stride was confident, his shoulders squared, the quiet authority of an Alpha radiating from him even when he spoke softly. “Yes,” Nysera said. “They are near the western ridge this time.” Kael stopped beside her, his golden eyes narrowing slightly as he scanned the forest line beyond the clearing. “They are testing our awareness.” Nysera nodded. “But that is not all.” He glanced at her. “The mark reacted differently today,” she continued. “Not like before. It was not warning me about an attack.” Kael frowned slightly. “Then what was it doing?” Nysera hesitated. “It felt like a signal.” For a moment the only sound between them was the distant echo of wolves training in the clearing. Kael’s expression hardened. “That means someone is trying to reach you.” Nysera’s stomach tightened. “Or lure me.” Kael turned fully toward her now, his presence suddenly more intense. “You will not go anywhere alone.” Nysera lifted an eyebrow. “I never said I would.” “You were thinking it.” A faint smirk tugged at her lips. “You are starting to know me too well.” Kael did not smile back. His gaze remained serious. “That is exactly what concerns me.” Before Nysera could respond, a howl suddenly split through the evening air. It was sharp. Urgent. A signal from the western patrol. Kael moved instantly. “Stay close.” The two of them ran toward the forest line, several warriors already shifting and sprinting ahead of them. The trees swallowed the fading sunlight quickly as they moved deeper into the woods. The western ridge came into view within minutes. And what they found waiting there was not what anyone expected. No rogues. No ambush. Only a single figure standing in the clearing. A wolf. But not one from Ironclaw. The stranger stood perfectly still beneath the tall trees, his grey fur streaked with old scars. His posture was tense but not aggressive. More wolves emerged from the shadows behind Kael and Nysera, surrounding the clearing cautiously. Kael stepped forward. “State your purpose.” The stranger shifted slowly into human form. He was older than most warriors, his face weathered, his eyes sharp with experience. “I came to deliver a message,” the man said. Kael’s voice remained cold. “From who?” The stranger’s gaze shifted past him. Straight to Nysera. The mark beneath her collarbone burned suddenly. “From the one who commands the rogues.” The clearing went silent. Several warriors growled low in their throats. Kael’s eyes darkened. “You walked into Ironclaw territory to deliver a message from our enemy?” The stranger nodded calmly. “Yes.” Nysera stepped forward before Kael could stop her. “What message?” The man studied her carefully. “So it is true,” he murmured. Nysera’s patience thinned. “The message.” He straightened slightly. “Our commander says the First Luna has awakened.” Nysera’s heart skipped once. “And?” The stranger continued. “He says you are standing on the wrong side of this war.” Kael’s growl vibrated through the clearing. “There is no war.” The man looked back at him calmly. “Not yet.” Nysera folded her arms slowly. “And what does he think the right side is?” The stranger held her gaze. “His.” Murmurs spread through the wolves surrounding them. Nysera remained still. “Why would he think I would join him?” The messenger spoke without hesitation. “Because the First Luna’s power was never meant to belong to one pack.” The mark flared again. Nysera felt it like lightning beneath her skin. The man continued. “He says the old bloodlines lied to you. That the power inside you was meant to unite all wolves, not serve one Alpha.” Kael stepped forward again, his voice like steel. “You have delivered your message. Now leave.” The messenger did not move. “There is more.” Nysera’s eyes narrowed. “Say it.” The man’s gaze never left hers. “Our commander invites you to meet him.” A heavy silence fell over the clearing. Kael’s voice dropped dangerously low. “That will not happen.” But the messenger continued speaking to Nysera. “He says if you want the truth about your bloodline, you will come.” Nysera felt the weight of every wolf’s gaze on her. Her mark pulsed again. Slow. Steady. Almost… curious. Kael turned toward her immediately. “You are not considering this.” Nysera did not answer right away. Instead she looked back at the messenger. “Where?” The man replied instantly. “Beyond the Black Hollow.” Several wolves gasped quietly. Black Hollow was rogue territory. Dangerous land. Nysera exhaled slowly. Then she stepped back toward Kael. “You may leave,” she told the messenger. The man nodded once. Without another word he shifted and disappeared into the forest. The clearing remained silent long after he was gone. Kael turned toward Nysera, his eyes blazing. “You will not go.” Nysera met his gaze calmly. “I did not say I would.” “You were thinking it.” Nysera sighed softly. “Yes.” Kael ran a hand through his dark hair, clearly restraining his temper. “This is exactly what they want.” “Probably.” “Then why even consider it?” Nysera looked toward the dark forest where the messenger had disappeared. “Because he might be telling the truth about one thing.” Kael frowned. “What?” Nysera touched the mark beneath her collarbone. “There are things about this power that even your elders cannot explain.” The wind rustled through the trees. Kael studied her carefully. “And you think the rogue commander knows the answers.” Nysera’s voice was quiet. “I think he knows something.” Kael stepped closer. “And if it is a trap?” Nysera’s silver eyes met his golden ones. “Then we will walk into it together.” For a moment Kael said nothing. Then his jaw tightened. “You are impossible.” Nysera allowed herself a small smile. “You noticed.” The tension between them hung heavy in the cool night air. Because they both knew something had changed. The rogues were no longer just attacking. Now they were inviting. And that made them far more dangerous. Far beyond the dark forest, past the borders of Ironclaw territory, a new game had begun. And Nysera had just been placed at the center of it.
