EPISODE 3 — THE THREATS BEGIN

278 Words
Ava sat in stunned silence, staring at the marriage certificate like it might dissolve if she blinked enough times. Adrian paced the room, phone pressed to his ear. “Yes… secure all entrances… no press leaks… no, she doesn’t leave.” His eyes flicked to her. “Ever.” Ava clenched her fists. “You can’t lock me away.” “I’m trying to keep you alive.” “I didn’t ask you to!” “You did when you married me.” She wanted to scream. To fight. To escape. But fear clawed at her throat. “Why are they after you?” she whispered. Adrian stopped pacing. His jaw tightened. His shoulders stiffened. “That’s classified.” “So I just have to live in the dark?” “For now.” A loud beep interrupted them. Adrian grabbed the remote and turned on the 80-inch screen. Security footage filled it. Outside the penthouse building… Men in black masks. Guns. Scanning the sidewalk. Searching. Ava’s blood turned to ice. “They’re already here?” she whispered. Adrian approached her slowly. “Yes.” She trembled. “Because of me?” His silence was answer enough. The tablet buzzed again. A message flashed on screen. BRING HER OUT AND WE LET IT END CLEAN. Ava staggered backward. “No… no… this can’t be real…” Adrian crushed the tablet in his hand like it was paper. His voice dropped to a terrifying calm. “They won’t touch you. Not while I’m breathing.” Ava stared at him. She didn’t know if he was her savior— or the reason she was in danger in the first place.
