CHAPTER 7: THE FEDERAL HOOK
The morning sun hadn't even cut through the ocean fog when the black federal Suburbans pulled onto the estate driveway, their red and blue lights flashing silently against the damp concrete.
Elena stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass of the master study, holding a cup of black coffee. She didn't flinch as ten agents in tactical vests bearing the letters FBI spilled out onto the front lawn. Beside her, Lev was fastening his watch, his face completely unreadable.
"Special Agent Miller," Elena said softly, recognizing the lead man stepping out of the front vehicle. "He’s been trying to put my father away for seven years. Now that Arthur is dead, he’s coming for the corpse's accounts."
Lev walked up behind her, his large hand coming to rest on her waist, his thumb tracing the hip bone beneath her tailored trousers. "The estate is locked down legal-wise. My team swept the paper trail twice."
"Your legal team handles mob violence and local cops, Lev," Elena replied, turning her head to meet his icy gaze. "Miller isn't local. He’s using an emergency federal asset-seizure warrant based on Arthur’s old embezzlement records. If he serves that warrant, every bank account tied to the Volkov name gets frozen by noon."
Before Lev could call down to the front gate guards, the inter-room comms chimed.
"Boss," Viktor’s voice came through, strained but firm. "They’re at the front doors. They have a federal seizure order signed by a circuit judge."
Lev looked down at Elena, a dark, dangerous spark igniting in his eyes. "I can have Miller’s car hit a tree on his way back to the federal building."
"No," Elena said, a smooth, sharp smirk touching her lips. She reached onto the mahogany desk, picking up a leather folder packed with tax filings, bank routing numbers, and corporate charters. "Violence makes you look guilty to a federal prosecutor. Paperwork makes them look stupid. Let me handle the agent."
Five minutes later, Elena walked down the grand marble staircase alone. Lev stayed on the upper landing, his broad arms resting on the railing, a quiet predator watching his partner walk into the trap.
Special Agent Miller stood in the main foyer, flanked by two armed federal officers. He was a middle-aged man with graying hair, a sharp suit, and an expression of smug victory.
"Elena Cornelia," Miller said, pulling a folded document from his coat pocket. "Or should I say Mrs. Volkova? I have a federal asset-freeze warrant for all holdings tied to Cornelia Enterprise and its subsidiary partners. That includes the shipping terminals and the accounts you transferred three days ago."
Elena stopped three steps above him, using the elevation to look down at him with cool, effortless authority. She didn't offer a hand. She didn't look nervous.
"Agent Miller," Elena said smoothly. "You're holding a Form 410 Seizure Order based on Arthur Cornelia's 2024 tax fraud, correct?"
Miller blinked, taken aback by her immediate grasp of the legal code. "It’s a valid court order signed by Judge Reynolds."
"It was a valid order," Elena corrected, pulling a single sheet of paper from her folder and holding it out. "Until eight o'clock yesterday morning, when Volkov Logistics filed a chapter-seven debt-restructuring petition under the new Maritime Commercial Code. The fifty million dollars you're tracking wasn't embezzled by Arthur—it was paid to Volkov Enterprise as a non-refundable corporate penalty for breached supply contracts signed three years ago."
Miller’s smug look faltered. He took the paper, his eyes darting frantically across the lines of dense financial text, stamped and sealed by the federal bankruptcy court.
"This... this is an old corporate shell," Miller stammered, his face darkening.
"It’s a legally registered Delaware corporation," Elena said softly, stepping down the final stairs until she was standing inches from him. "Which means those funds are protected under corporate priority debt laws. If you freeze those accounts today, you are violating a federal bankruptcy stay. I will have your warrant thrown out by two o'clock, and I will personally sue your field office for commercial tort damages."
Miller swallowed hard. He looked past her, catching sight of Lev standing at the top of the stairs—massive, silent, and looking at him like a man measuring a grave.
"You think you're clever, Elena," Miller spat under his breath, folding the paper with trembling fingers. "You traded a crooked father for a mafia boss."
"I didn't trade anything, Agent Miller," Elena said, her voice dropping into a cold, lethal register that echoed through the marble foyer. "I took control of the company. Now take your men and get off our property before I call your district supervisor to report an illegal trespass."
Miller stared at her for five long seconds, his jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. Without another word, he turned on his heel and stormed out the front doors, his agents trailing right behind him.
Elena stood in the center of the foyer until the heavy double doors clicked shut.
Heavy footsteps echoed down the stairs as Lev descended, stopping right behind her. He reached out, his big hands sliding around her waist, pulling her back against his chest. He dipped his head, his lips brushing the sensitive spot right behind her ear.
"You stripped a federal agent of a warrant using a tax loophole," Lev whispered, his rough voice vibrating through her back.
"I told you," Elena murmured, leaning her head back against his shoulder as his thumb stroked her hip. "I don't like messy books."
Lev let out a low, dark laugh, his grip tightening around her. "Miller wasn't working alone, Elena. My contact in the city center just sent a message. Miller got that warrant from The Commission."
Elena narrowed her eyes. The Commission was the shadow council of five old-money crime bosses who oversaw all syndicate activity along the eastern seaboard.
"They think we're getting too powerful," Elena said.
"They think you are making me too powerful," Lev corrected, turning her around in his arms to look into her eyes. "They invited us to their annual charity gala tonight at the Grand Palace Hotel. It’s an ambush disguised as a truce."
Elena’s eyes flashed with a cold, fierce light. She reached up, straightening Lev's collar. "Then let's go show the old guard who runs this city now."
