CHAPTER 10: THE SOVEREIGN PAIR
One month later.
The dark, suffocating clouds that used to hang perpetually over the city’s skyline had broken at last, giving way to a brilliant, sharp winter sun that glinted off the ocean waves.
The old Commission—the shadow council of corrupt mob bosses who had governed the state’s underbelly through fear, extortion, and secret payoffs for thirty years—was completely dead. Its old leaders had either been forced into silent, permanent exile or stripped of every dollar they owned through Elena’s financial maneuvers. The local business journals and television networks were dominating the news cycle with reports of an unprecedented economic revival across the harbor district, driven entirely by the rapid expansion of a newly formed corporate giant: Volkov-Cornelia Holdings.
It was a crisp, clear afternoon on the top floor of the city's newest glass skyscraper—a seventy-story tower that served as the supreme corporate and operational headquarters of their unified empire.
In the center of a grand executive office overlooking the harbor sat a long, polished marble conference table. On one side sat three top corporate attorneys in crisp suits alongside the city's mayor, who looked noticeably pale and nervous in his formal attire. On the other side of the table sat Lev and Elena.
Elena looked breathtaking in an immaculate, white tailored suit, her silver-blonde hair pinned back in an intricate twist. A heavy diamond band glittered on her left ring finger, catching the sunlight streaming through the floor-to-ceiling glass. Beside her, Lev sat in a bespoke charcoal-navy suit. His massive, six-foot-three frame radiated effortless authority, his broad hand resting casually over hers on the cold marble table.
"The legal merger is fully executed, Mr. and Mrs. Volkov," the lead attorney announced, his voice trembling slightly as he slid a thick, leather-bound contract across the marble toward them. "All shipping terminals, real estate holdings, off-shore accounts, and commercial logistics previously held separately by the Volkov estate and the former Cornelia holdings are now legally registered under equal, fifty-fifty co-ownership."
The mayor cleared his throat nervously, adjusting his tie as he looked across the table at the young power couple. "This contract legally makes your holding group the single largest economic force in the state, Mrs. Volkova. You control the ports, the supply lines, and the commercial real estate."
"We are well aware of our standing, Mr. Mayor," Elena said smoothly, her voice cool, confident, and utterly untouchable.
She picked up a gold fountain pen from the leather holder and signed her name on the final line of the document in crisp, flawless calligraphy: Elena Cornelia-Volkova.
She passed the pen to Lev. Lev picked it up and signed his name right beside hers instantly, without spending a single second reading the legal fine print. He didn't need to—he trusted her sharp, brilliant mind more than he trusted his own instincts.
"Pleasure doing business with you, gentlemen," Lev said, his deep baritone voice quiet, commanding, and heavy with unspoken warning.
The lawyers and the mayor quickly gathered their leather briefcases, nodded respectfully, and exited the room as fast as their feet could carry them, leaving the massive executive suite in complete, serene silence.
Elena stood up, walking across the polished hardwood floor to the floor-to-ceiling glass wall. She looked out over the sprawling city skyline stretching beneath them. Cargo ships were moving in perfect, organized lines through the deep blue waters of the harbor, every single vessel operating under their unified banner. The city was quiet, orderly, and completely under their control.
Lev walked up behind her, his heavy, deliberate footsteps echoing softly against the floor. He stopped directly behind her, his large, calloused hands resting gently on her shoulders before sliding down to wrap around her waist, pulling her back flush against his broad, warm chest. He dipped his head, his lips brushing the soft, sensitive skin right behind her ear, making a familiar shiver run down her spine.
"Three months ago," Lev whispered into her neck, his thumb tracing the soft curve of her hip through her white silk suit, "a pathetic, desperate coward brought you into my private study like a piece of livestock, offering you up as a pawn to clear a dead man's debt."
Elena leaned back into his firm heat, her hands coming up to rest over his broad forearms. She smiled softly, looking at their joint reflection in the clear glass wall.
"And now I co-own every square inch of this city with you," Elena replied, her voice soft but filled with unwavering pride. "I rebuilt your accounts, wiped out your rivals, and turned a violent mob war into a legitimate corporate empire."
Lev turned her around in his arms, his strong grip effortlessly pivoting her until she was facing him. He looked down into her bright, fearless blue eyes. A genuine, quiet smile touched his sharp lips—a rare, gentle look that was reserved exclusively for the woman who had conquered his wild, ruthless heart.
"You didn't just rebuild the accounts, Elena," Lev growled softly, leaning down until his lips hovered a fraction of an inch from hers. "You took this kingdom for yourself. You don't just co-own this city, little bird—you own the entire empire. And you own me."
Elena looked up at him, her heart beating strong and steady against her ribs. The fear, uncertainty, and anger she had felt on the night her father sold her away were ancient memories now. She had taken a forced contract meant to e*****e her and used it to tear down her enemies, claim her freedom, and earn the absolute devotion of the most feared man in the country.
"Good," Elena whispered, a radiant, dangerous smile touching her lips. "Because I don't share what's mine."
She reached up, tangling her fingers in the short, dark hair at the nape of his neck, and pulled his lips down to hers in a slow, deep, passionate kiss that sealed their unbreakable partnership forever.
They were no longer boss and captive. They were no longer predator and prey. They were equal sovereigns of an untouchable kingdom, ruling their city side-by-side as true partners in blood, business, and love.
