A week or so ]later Mistress Rosa assembled all her slaves in the dorm area.
“We have a slight problem,” she explained. “The harvester in the sugarcane field broke down. With the pandemic and the current politics and distribution problems in the United States, we can’t get the part to fix it for five to six weeks. The fields need to be harvested right away, so we are going to harvest the cane like they did back in the olden days.”
Immediately I knew where she was going with this.
“Four of you will be working in the fields for the next few days. We’re going by seniority. You’ll be working in pairs, so here’s the way it works. Adam and his buddy François along with Alex and Phillip will work the first day. Others will work the next and so on. It will be just like in the days
