A Moment Of Frustration

1190 Words
Mina's home was a modest, two-story house nestled in a quiet suburban neighborhood, characterized by its welcoming ambiance and the warmth it radiated. The exterior, with its gently aging brick facade and white trim around the windows, spoke of a house that had been lived in and loved for many years. A small, well-tended garden in the front yard boasted a variety of colorful flowers and shrubs, reflecting the care and attention Mina's family put into their home. Upon entering the house, one was greeted by a cozy living room, where a comfortable sofa and a couple of armchairs were arranged around a modest fireplace. The walls were adorned with family photographs and a few pieces of art that Mina had created, each telling a story of the family's history and interests. The living room was a space where laughter and conversation filled the air, a place for the family to gather and share their days. Despite the late hour, her family was still awake, eagerly waiting to surprise her. The moment she stepped through the door, they erupted into a chorus of "Surprise!" Her eyes widened at the sight of her favorite cake, a beautifully decorated Black Forest cake, spread out on the table. Her sister, Lina, an amateur baker with a talent for creating delicious desserts, had lovingly prepared the cake. The kitchen was filled with the sweet aroma of chocolate and cherries, a scent that brought back memories of childhood birthdays and family celebrations. The Black Forest cake was a special treat, with its layers of rich chocolate cake, whipped cream, and cherries, topped with chocolate shavings. It had been Mina's favorite since she was a little girl, a delight that her sister had introduced her to. Back then, Mina, with her chubby cheeks, would eagerly await each slice, though she often playfully scolded her sister for making her indulge so much. These days, she limited herself to enjoying the cake only on special occasions like birthdays and Christmas, mindful of balancing her love for the dessert with a healthier lifestyle. However, her mood was far from celebratory. The joyous occasion, which should have been a moment of happiness and gratitude, was overshadowed by the turmoil in her heart. The memories of the evening's events at the restaurant, the painful revelation of Ted's betrayal, and the humiliation caused by Anna, her grumpy manager, weighed heavily on her mind. The festive atmosphere of the room, with its cheerful decorations and the laughter of her family, felt jarringly out of place with the storm of emotions raging inside her. Her mom, Nina, was the first to notice the change in Mina's expression. Nina and Ben had married young, with Nina only 20 and Ben 25. It was a love filled with optimism and dreams for the future. At the tender age of 21, Nina gave birth to their first daughter. She had always been fond of names with a melodic ring to them, and so she chose the name Lina. The decision had raised a few eyebrows among family and friends. Many thought it seemed a bit whimsical for a name, but Ben, ever the supportive husband, had encouraged Nina's choice, finding joy in the uniqueness of the name. Three years later, when their second daughter was born, Nina continued the pattern, naming her Mina. The rhyming names of Lina and Mina became a charming quirk of the family, a symbol of Nina's playful and creative spirit. Both daughters, as they grew older, had their moments of frustration with their names, feeling that they were too similar and lacked creativity. They often teased Nina about her choice, but as they matured, they came to appreciate the uniqueness of their names and the story behind them. At this moment, Nina asked, "Mina darling, are you okay?" Her voice was laced with concern as she observed her daughter's uncharacteristic demeanor. Nina, with her intuitive maternal instinct, could always sense when something was amiss with her children. Once Nina pointed it out, Lina and Ben also noticed the subtle shift in Mina's mood. Their expressions turned from joyous celebration to concern in an instant. Lina, with a furrowed brow, set aside the cake knife and moved closer to Mina. Ben, a kind-hearted man with a gentle nature, placed his hand on Mina's shoulder, offering silent support. "Mina, what's wrong? You seem upset," Lina asked, her voice tinged with worry. She and Mina had always shared a close bond, often confiding in each other about their lives. Lina's baking was more than a hobby; it was a way she expressed her love for her family, and seeing Mina distressed on a day that should have been filled with joy was deeply concerning to her. The living room, once filled with the sounds of celebration, fell silent as Mina's family gathered around her, their faces etched with concern. The cake, once a symbol of joy and festivity, now seemed out of place amidst the tension. Mina felt a lump in her throat as she struggled to find the words to explain the heartache she had experienced. The warmth and love of her family provided a stark contrast to the cold, harsh reality of her evening. She knew she had to share her pain, but the thought of voicing it out loud made the betrayal feel even more real. Instead of revealing the truth, Mina took a deep breath and said, "Nothing is the matter. Ted proposed to me, and I said I need some time." Her voice was steady, but there was an underlying tremor that didn't go unnoticed. Lina, who knew her sister better than anyone, wasn't convinced. She knew how eagerly Mina had been awaiting Ted's proposal. Why would she say no now? The confusion was evident in Lina's eyes, and she exchanged a worried glance with her parents. Something was definitely amiss. Nina, ever the concerned mother, was the first to speak again. "But why, darling? I thought you wanted to marry." Mina shrugged and replied, "No, I don't." But her mother began to protest, "But you are 25 already. When will I see my grandkids?" Nina, who had married young, cherished the idea of being a young grandmother. Mina's mood, already sour from the evening's events, worsened at her mother's words. She snapped back, "So? It's okay that Lina gets to stay here. If I do, am I a burden?" A dead silence hung in the air following Mina's outburst. She instantly regretted her words, realizing the hurt they could cause. Lina, who had been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, faced challenges that made the prospect of marriage daunting. While the disease allowed her to live a relatively normal life and pursue her passion for baking, the uncertainty and the physical and emotional demands associated with it made it difficult for her to consider marriage. Lina, always strong and resilient, had come to terms with her condition and its implications. However, Mina's words, spoken in a moment of frustration, stung deeply. The room was heavy with unspoken emotions as each family member processed the tension and hurt that had suddenly surfaced.
