(Emma)
Anthony and Darlene turn off and head home while we continue straight. I was hoping to get to spend more time with them and to get to know my pack but I’m sure Darlene’s tired from all the walking.
As we approach our house’s driveway from the atv trail I notice a large black SUV and a small moving van parking behind Kara’s truck. My heart begins racing and I barely let Kara come to a complete stop before I jump off and go dashing towards the vehicles. My mom leaps out of the backseat and runs over to hug me, tears spilling out both of our eyes.
“Oh my gods I’m so glad your okay! Did they do anything to you? Please tell me that wicked b*tch didn’t hurt you.” I sob into Mom’s shoulder.
She strokes my back, trying to calm me. “Sweet girl of course I’m alright, why would you think something bad happened to me?”
I begin to explain but Kara steps up to us. “I think it would be best if we explain to her inside. Marcus, Jim, would you please go check on that cabin we had talked about and see if it’s suitable for our new doctor?”
The two men that had escorted my mother nod and get back into the SUV. My mom grabs her bag off the ground and looks between Kara and I. “I’m so sorry for not introducing myself yet, I just missed my daughter so much. I am Amelia Scott, Emma’s mom.”
Kara nods respectfully. “I’m Kara Kingston, the future Alpha of this pack and Queen of the species. It’s wonderful to meet you Dr. Scott, I wish it could’ve happened differently but regardless I’m so happy to have you here with us.”
Mom narrows her eyes and looks between the two of us. But she says nothing and we walk into the house without another word.
I walk into the house first and start towards the stairs to head up to our home but Kara guides my mother over to the entertainment area and invites her to have a seat on the massive couch as she lights the fire place. Slight confusion overcomes me as I ponder why she wouldn’t invite my mother upstairs to see our home.
“I’m sure your probably tired from the trip Dr. Scott, can I get you anything to eat or drink before I run upstairs to change?” Kara asks, flicking on the lights.
My mom sinks into the couch. “Oh Your Majesty, please don’t wait on me, I can get my own if you tell me where it’s at.”
Kara walks confidently towards me. “Emma, I feel extremely underdressed, would you mind showing your mother to the kitchenette?”
I tell her yes and she goes upstairs. Motioning for Mom to follow me into the next room, I show her to the fully stocked bar and fridge are. “Do you want tea, lemonade?” I say, rummaging through the fridge.
A glass clinks behind me and I turn around to find my mother pouring herself a drink of Scotch. “Nope I would love some ice though, if you’re going to tell me why exactly I’m up here with the f*cking polar bears I’ll need to bring the whole bottle with me.” She grabs the bottle of liquor and brings it with her back to the couch.
I sit down next to her and watch as she tosses what was in her glass back in one drink before pouring another. I raise an eyebrow. “I take it it’s been a rough couple days. Where do you want me to start?”
My mom coughs as she takes a smaller drink. “Well how about we start with Carter and what happened there. You were engaged honey, to a really good guy.”
I swallow back my discomfort. “Mom, my relationship with Carter wasn’t what you thought it was.” I take a deep breath, searching for the bravery to tell her. “Carter was very abusive. He would hurt me in ways I never want to think about again. He would call me names, insult my weight, degrade me.” A single tear escapes my eye as I watch my mothers face contort in horror.
“That bastard put his hands on you? Oh baby I’m so sorry I wasn’t there. I’m so sorry I didn’t see it, gods I’m so sorry.” Her voice cracks and I pat her knee.
“Mom there was no way you would’ve known, Carter was used to fooling people with his charm. He even had me convinced I deserved what was happening to me. But when we went to a dinner with Kara and her father something happened.”
Mom’s eyes widen with realization. “She’s your mate?”
I smile proudly. “I know, I landed a pretty hot chick didn’t I?”
“I didn’t even know you were.. that you liked.. well that women were even an option for you.” She stutters, obviously shocked.
“Neither did she, but I’m pretty good at changing peoples minds.” Kara’s voice echos through the room as she approaches us, looking ever so professional in a very sexy jumper. The bottoms flared out and caught air as she steps, exposing the red heels she matched it with.
Mom finishes her drink and once again pours another. “This is so much. Okay so Carter was a lying sack of dog sh*t, the queen of werewolves is your mate, I’m still confused as to why I’m here and what happened for you to think something bad was going to happen to me.”
Kara places her hand on my leg and looks at my mom. “I invited them to my pack in hopes of changing Emma’s mind. That’s when she told me that Carter’s mother had warned her if she ever left him or didn’t present a baby within a very short time frame, that they would have you horribly tortured. Luckily I was able to convince Carter that his true mate would be a much better match for him and to let Emma go and be with me. That’s why it was so urgent that you come here immediately, we didn’t want his mother to have time to retaliate on Emma for choosing to be with her soul mate instead of a man that beats and cheats on her.”
My mother sits back into the couch processing everything she was just told. “I am so sorry I was not there for you Em, I had no idea. I thought you were happy. If I had known that any of that was going I would’ve taken you far away.”
Smiling softly at her, I lean into Kara, wrapping my arm around her waist. “Don’t worry mom, I’m glad things happened the way they did. I was able to meet the person I’m truly supposed to be with and she treats me with the respect and dignity I deserve.”
Kara nods. “It’s been wonderful to meet you and I’m so glad we had this conversation. Now, I would love to offer a job and a place as a member of my pack. You would be well protected, well paid and near your daughter. Whatever the Balt’s we’re paying you I’ll double it. It’s hard to find a good doctor up here and we certainly need one.”
Kara and my mother talk business while I run upstairs to change out of my dirty clothes. First I hope into the shower and rinse the sweat and smell of dead animal off me. Then I go into my closet and change into some dark jeans and a burnt orange sweater.
I go back downstairs from the Alpha suite to find my mom putting her coat back on. I pause on the top of the stairs to eavesdrop. “Thank you so much for your hospitality your majesty, I’m sure the cabin will be a perfect place for my things. And please take care of my daughter. She’s been through so much and I just want her to be happy.”
Kara answers in the monotone voice. “I will always take care of her. I do have a question though. Why did you never train her to be able to harness her powers? I’ve seen them in action and she could very easily take out an entire pack with enough motivation.”
Mom sighs and puts her bag down. “Watch my hand Kara. See how it glows yellow, like the sun?” She lets her finger tips light up in a soft color. “My gift is from the Sun god. My parents come from a long line of healers. We help people, our magic is never meant to harm anyone or to be used for protection. Only healing and helping.” She drops her hand. “Emma’s father, he was from a clan called the Salem Originals. They’re magic is from the moon goddess. And although she gives the gift of your wolves and your mates, her gifts are full of passion and insatiable hunger. Even your mates, you love with such an intensity you’re willing to kill for each other without hesitation. Your wolf packs fight each other out of passion and hunger. Emma’s gift is harnessed with that same passion. She is her fathers daughter, and he was killed for using his gift the way the Moon Goddess expected. He loved me and he killed for me. In return he was hanged and burned. I never wanted that for my daughter, so I told her to hide it, to control it. Susan would’ve had her killed in a heartbeat if Emma had ever stepped out of line.”
A sadness overcomes me like a storm front. Memories of that horrible night flash through my mind. My father set an entire town on fire. We had been on our way home from a short road trip for Dad’s birthday nearly a decade ago and stopped at a restaurant about an hour away from home. Dad and I went to pay the bill while mom got the car started. I remember mom yelling for help and Dad ran outside. A vampire had attacked her and was trying to drag her to his car. My dad sprang to action and told me to run. He killed the first one but then more showed up. I hid in the woods nearby and watched the sky fill with smoke as he burned their whole town down to protect Mom.
We rushed home because they knew witch hunters would be looking for us soon, but while mom and I were upstairs packing they found us. We hid in the closet as they dragged dad outside and burned him alive. Mom tried to cover my ears but I still hear his screams echo in my head.
I blink away the haunting memory and watch as Kara and my mother say their goodbyes. Taking the steps two at a time I come down to see my mother off.
“Emma I’m going to go check out this new cabin Kara has given me, I’ll call you and maybe we can get lunch or something tomorrow. I’m just really tired and a little drunk.”
I lift my lip into a half smile and hug her. “I’ll have to come see it, Have Marcus help you get your bed and stuff inside so you have somewhere to sleep at least. I love you, talk soon.”
My mother waves one last time at Kara before leaving.
