CHASED OUT
Evelyn stared confusedly at the boisterous aura coming from the pack house.
Damon had clearly warned her not to step foot here anymore, but she couldn’t leave just like that. She needed her things, more than that, she needed to talk to him again. Maybe now, his anger must have subsided, and he wouldn’t cruelly demand that she disappear from his life. He might even take back the rejection.
Evelyn knew it was just her wishful thinking but she couldn’t brush it aside. She was hell-bent on hanging on to her little thread of hope with everything she had.
The guards at the entrance paid no respect as she approached them. It was a face-slapping act and wrung tears down her eyes, but she wasn’t about to turn around.
With a deep breath, she held her baby closer and walked into the building.
Her steps slowed at the little crowd wafting through the sitting room to the kitchen and every corner of the house. She spotted her mate in the sitting room, literally in the spotlight, holding a glass of champagne and engaging in some boyish conversation with some male pack members. Beside him was Luna Genevieve, his mother.
In her two years of being mated to Damon, Evelyn never experienced any form of warmth from her. She was just as abusive, or more, and never failed to trample on Evelyn, with each chance she got. Seeing her here only made Evelyn even more anxious about what this little celebration was all about.
She wanted to go to Damon. She was gonna beg him for a bit of privacy so they could talk things out. Then in the course of it, he could tell her what they were celebrating. But merely taking a step, she froze at the next words she heard.
“Congratulations on getting a new Luna.” One of the men with Damon said, clicking their glasses.
Evelyn gulped hard at that. Wh-what did he just say?
“And we wish her a safe delivery too. We hope she gives birth to the finest male the Pack has ever seen!” another added and they all guffawed and clicked their glasses.
Evelyn was torn. New luna. Safe delivery. None of those words pointed to her. They certainly weren’t talking about her. It was someone else. Perhaps she was the owner of the extra female scent lingering on Damon?
On cue, long legs, platinum, blonde hair, a charming but churlish smile, and a curvier body found their way to Damon, going right into his arms and garnering mad cheers from the crowd.
Evelyn’s gaze was blurred with hot tears and she batted her lashes to get them out of the way. When she did, she finally got a good view of the girl. It wasn’t some stranger. It was Seraphina Raines, the girl her mother-in-law had always fancied above her and repeatedly wished out loud that Damon would be with instead.
Was it finally happening? Did Seraphina end up replacing her, not just as Damon’s mate but as the Luna? Was she the reason Damon rejected her?
Her thoughts got suspended as she realized everywhere had gotten unusually silent. Back to reality, she saw everyone staring at her. Weird, mockery, and disdainful gazes were brutally assessing her. She tried so hard not to flat-out panic as she clutched her baby harder, like trying to get a bit of strength from him.
“What is this lousy thing doing here?” Luna Genevieve was already on her case, heading to her. Evelyn cowered a bit, lowering her head. She’d never stood up to Luna Genevieve, and she wasn’t about to start now. The odds were hugely against her. She knew that more than anyone else.
“Greetings, ma’am,” Evelyn bowed, intimidatingly humbled by her presence.
“What are you doing here?” Luna Genevieve repeatedly more sternly, with a thick, malicious tone. “I’m sure my son already made it clear that he was done with you. He already rejected your pathetic ass so how dare you show up here?!”
Evelyn glanced at Damon, and the nonchalance in his eyes, coupled with his arms firmly wrapped around Seraphina brewed more tears in her eyes. He didn’t care that she was openly being humiliated.
Other times, he’d be the one to come calm his mother and water down her viciousness. Not because he cared about Evelyn but because he was too concerned about his reputation and didn’t wanna give others something to gossip about.
But right now, he didn’t seem to want to interfere. He was indifferent about it and had amusement in his eyes. It was the hardest pill for Evelyn and the huge confirmation that she truly had no place by his side anymore. He really did discard her.
But she couldn’t just leave: not because she wanted to shamelessly latch onto him, but she had nowhere to go. Her parents were long dead. She had no relatives. So who would take her and her sick baby in?
“Mother.” Evelyn dropped to her knees, painfully letting go of every bit of pride she had going. “Mother, please, don’t send me away. I’m-“ God, it was hard to say it. But she had no choice; it was either this or getting thrown out on the streets in the middle of the night. “I’m okay with Damon taking another mate. I’m okay with not being the Luna. I just need a place to stay and take care of my son.”
Back in the hospital and here too, she was continuously choosing her son over Damon. Was her love for Damon that little, or did she already know deeply that there wasn’t any hope with him, and she was now redirecting all that love to her son?
“No, no way in hell!” Luna Genevieve disagreed vehemently. “You and your sick child would only infest my daughter-in-law and her unborn child. You’ll pass your sick touch to her and I’m never letting that happen. You can't stay here. I forbid it!”
“Mother, please, he’s also your grandchild. Have a little pity on- ahh!” Evelyn’s scream was deafening as she received a resounding slap on her face from Luna Genevieve.
Luna Genevieve grabbed a fistful of her hair, yanking her head up to meet her gaze. “This better be the last time you dare to link me to that curse you call a son.”
“Mother, please stop. You’re hurting me,” Evelyn pleaded in tears.
“Be thankful I haven’t killed you off yet. But I might be forced to if you don’t get out of here. Guards!” Luna Genevieve let go of her hair and stepped back.
Three guards scooted over to her and she pointed at Evelyn. “Get rid of this floozie and her sick child. If she ever steps foot in this building again, I’ll have the head of whoever let her in.”
“Mother, please, have pity on me!” Evelyn's cries were loud and echoed pain. She got scooped from the floor by the guards and dragged out of the building.
They tossed her carelessly on the ground. “Mother, please!” but the huge doors were already shut in her face.
She sat there, bawling her eyes out, whilst hugging her little son. Where would they go? That question triggered endless tears down her eyes. The creaking sound of the door opening got her filled with a flicker of hope but it dwindled at the sight of Seraphina.
“Here, I thought you'd need a bag.” She said ever so sweetly, dropping Evelyn's little bag on the ground. “There's a little cash in there. Just for transport.”
Evelyn was gutted by her scorning display of hospitality. But she was too weak to call her out for it. And painfully as it sounded, she did need the cash.
“You know, it's not your fault Damon didn't fall in love with you.” Seraphina began, stealing her attention instantly. “I'm just prettier and I get him more than you ever did. It's just natural that he'd want me instead of you. So don't beat yourself up much.”
The nerves! Evelyn was on her feet, reddened with rage.
“Damon and I were mates for two years! If any one of us knew him better, that would be me!”
“Yeah, but, he was also with me those two years,” Seraphina added with a sweet smile. “He spent more time in my bed than in yours those two years.”
Evelyn was dumbstruck. Of everything to crown the misery she was going through tonight, finding out that Damon had never stayed faithful to her was the worst.
“So you see, you never really knew him. And he was never yours. So don't cry too much and just…move on with your life. All right?” Seraphina blew her a kiss and sashayed back into the building.
Evelyn felt lifeless as she picked up the bag and left the premises. She hadn't realized how much she'd trekked until her baby began wailing.
“Sorry, dear. I'm really sorry.” She whispered, looking around. It was pitch dark here with the thick forest around. This wasn't a safe place for her and her child. She needed to get to a safer place to spend the night.
Then in the morning, she'd continue her journey back to her hometown.
“Grab her!” A rugged voice bellowed from the darkness.
Evelyn was frightened out of her mind by it. Before she realized what was going on, three men jumped on her.
One of them swiftly took her child from her arms. While the other two had her pinned on the ground, fussing with her clothes.
“Let me go!!” Her screams were feral as she struggled relentlessly. But they overpowered her and were gonna have their way with her in minutes.
Her teary eyes spotted a figure in the woods, staring at them keenly.
She wept bitterly and whispered out the words lingering on her lips.
“Please save me.”
