Episode three

THE ROGUE ALPHA Kade Kroft had an uneven frown as he watched the long line of the slaves being counted before they were sold off. He was going harder on the blunt between his fingers, puffing the ring of smokes into the air as he keenly watched. “Number 26…” one of his men who was doing the counting said. A frail girl stumbled shakily out of the line and approached him. He scrutinized her and so did Kade. She was young and soft. She'd be worth over a million dollars, so she'd better be reserved for his higher-up bidders. The man pushed her to a side where the likes of her were standing. Kade sighed satisfactorily, but that frown was there, and so was the knot in his heart. It wasn't going away, no matter how pleased he was with what was going on. Matter of fact, he should be more than pleased. He should be ecstatic! Probably throwing a damn party, because why not? His hunting today had gained him over a hundred rejects, most of them were females and he was gonna sell them off and gain more cash than he ever did. He'd have enough cash to finish up more structures and claim more medium Packs to his name. He'd once again expand his domination over this part of the region. It was everything he wanted, so why the f**k was he so irritated and goddamn sullen?! He'd pass for a depressed teenager with the way he was looking right now. “Man, this would be one hell of a sale.” The voice behind him yanked him from his funk. His eyes darted to the side a bit, acknowledging his best friend and Beta, Lucas. “Yeah.” He replied dryly, blowing another round of smoke into the air. After a brief minute of silence, his Beta continued. “I don't see the girl though.” Kade stiffened, humbling the growl in his throat. The last thing he wanted right now was to discuss the girl. She already got him pissed and disoriented. That was more than enough damage for a day. He was trying not to think about her. But Lucas could drive him into doing that if he continued talking. “Where is she? She's not in the line. Did she escape?” A thousand questions and Kade was back to thinking about her. Fuck it! He'd managed to keep her out of his mind for thirty minutes. Yeah, he was checking. It was that serious. Her chestnut brown hair, dazzling hazel eyes, and prim figure hadn't left his mind ever since he saw her. Seeing her out there about to be violated by his men shouldn't have hurt him as much as it did. But the mere sight of them gutted him so hard and sprang up a beastly rage in him. And then his wolf went berserk with his bold claims on her. “Mate! Mate!!!” And then the next thing he knew, he'd gone crazy, and coldly killed his men. All three of them who touched her. He didn't know what possessed him but before he realized what he'd done, they were already dead. Now he was pissed about that, about her and about how she effortlessly influenced him into killing his loyal men. He'd kill her, too, if his wolf wasn't firmly against it. He couldn't hurt her, that much he knew, and that fact was already driving him nuts. Another reason why he couldn't touch her was because she owed him a lot of explanations. Everything about her was poking at his painful past and he needed to know why she was connected to it. Who the hell was she and why did she seem like one of the villains who ruined his once perfect life? Goddess forbid that he gets mated to one of the imbeciles who ruined his life. Goddess forbid that he spares her life. Once he proves she's as guilty as he suspects, he's gonna kill her. Whether his wolf agrees with that or not. “Where is she?” Lucas pressed on, nudging him out of his thoughts. “Don't f*****g ask me.” Kade was done with the blunt and tossed it aside. Needing to get away from Lucas and his questions, Kade left the underground and headed for the main building. He got inside and jogged up the stairs. It didn't help that Lucas was right behind him. When he got into his study, Lucas breezed inside, right before he could shut the door in his face. “What the f**k, man? Can't I have a bit of privacy?” Kade snapped, fussing with his sleeves as his long strides led him to his seat. “You'll have all the privacy you need after you answer my question.” Lucas pinpointed, standing in front of him, with heavy brows that arched with curiosity. Kade grabbed the whiskey bottle on his table and poured himself a shot. Like that was gonna help chill his raving mind. He shot Lucas a deadly glare. “What the f**k do you want?” “The girl; she wasn't in that line…” “Yeah, that's because I don't plan on selling her off.” Kade cut him off briskly, hoping that would be enough explanation. But hardly, because now he got Lucas even more curious. “I don't understand. If you're not gonna sell her off, what the f**k are you gonna do with her?” “I don't know yet—” “You’re not gonna sell her off but you don't have any definite use for her. What the hell, man? That girl is worth good cash. I know she just had a baby but it got nothing on her. Our bidders would love her. Keeping her is insane, especially since we got no use for her.” Lucas’ tactical financial analysis was so on point it almost made Kade flip on him. But he held his cool, gulping more shots of whiskey. “I just can't sell her off yet. So stop bugging me about it.” “You're being ridiculous.” “And you're getting on my damn nerves!” Kade slammed the glass on the table. “ Instead of being here and driving me crazy with your questions, why don't you go get me the doctor?” Lucas was slightly taken aback and his brows furrowed. “Why? Are you sick?” “No, not me. For her child.” Kade had the glass to his lips, as he felt a wave of cringe sweep through him. Not only was he pinning on keeping her from being sold, but he was also trying to get a doctor for her defective child. And for what? Why? God, he felt like some f*****g loser. Still, he couldn't overlook it. That child was sick and needed intense medical attention. It was a fact that he couldn't ignore. “Okay, now, you sound crazy.” Lucas pedaled back, laughing humorlessly. “First, you keep the girl from being sold. And now you're gonna get her son treated? I don't understand, man. When did we start treating our slaves?” “Lucas, get the f**k out of my study. Please.” Kade said sternly. “Nah, not until I understand what has gotten over you.” “Fine, make yourself comfortable. I'm leaving!” Kade was on his feet, heading for the door. “C'mon, man. Tell me the damn truth. Why are you keeping her?!” Lucas yelled right before he got to the door. Unable to take it anymore, Kade turned with an outburst. “because that damned girl is my mate. And that defective child is mine!!”
