Chapter 15

Lucan's POV “Alpha Vance,” Milo said through the mind link. “We are tracking Alpha Draven. He is approaching university grounds. We need you to meet us at the northeastern borders so he does not harm any students.” I tensed and rose from my desk, glancing into the hallway to confirm no one else was nearby. Just as I was about to end the day, this bastard had to appear. I hoped to the Goddess that Clara was still with Jasmine, exactly as Jasmine had reported earlier. I ran out into the darkness, scanned the woods once more, and shifted into my wolf, sprinting toward the northeastern borders to join my pack and stop Draven from advancing any farther onto university land. When I spotted him standing among his warriors, I growled harshly and shifted back into human form, sensing my pack closing in behind me. “You are not moving any farther onto the university.” Draven turned, his eyes blazing gold. “Clara Sterling," Alpha Draven growled. “I need to find her.” “Why do you want sterling?” I asked the question as if her name meant nothing to me, as if I had no idea who she was. But Goddess, I did. If Draven discovered that Clara was my mate, everything would turn far worse for us very quickly. I needed to keep Clara safe from things she did not even know existed yet. “That is none of your f*****g business.” He stepped closer with his claws extended. “Where is she?” Hands clenched into fists, I moved toward him to show him and his pack that I was not afraid because I was not. My pack could defeat him easily. But we stood on school grounds with humans less than half a mile away, and Clara’s dorm was close. Too close. “I already told you I do not know who she is.” “And I thought I made it clear that you needed to find her.” “I do not take orders from anyone, Draven.” Growling, Draven leaped into the air and shifted into his wolf, charging at me. I shifted into mine as well, catching sight of my warriors approaching their pack from behind. Before I knew it the forest became a bloodbath, fur flying everywhere, the needle-covered path turning into a river of thick wolf blood while howls echoed through the trees. We fought for what must have been nearly an hour until Draven lifted his nose to the air and howled. His wolves retreated through the woods, and part of me wanted to chase him down and end this right then and there, but I… I caught Clara’s scent drifting through the trees. She was close. If Draven found her… After ordering my wolves to return home safely so we could form a plan, I raced toward her scent. From a distance I spotted Clara standing alone on the quad. It had to be around one in the morning already, and Alpha Draven was hunting for her. I did not know if he recognized her face or her scent, but I was taking no chances, so I shifted behind a tree. “What are you doing out here, Clara?” I scolded, rushing toward her completely naked because my clothes were stuffed in the bush behind her. She must have thought I was insane, approaching her bare and covered in blood, but it did not matter. I needed her out of sight immediately. Alpha Draven was determined to locate her as quickly as supernaturally possible. “Professor Vance,” Clara said in a breathy whisper. Her eyes widened as she slowly looked down at my naked body, her mouth forming a small O. “Wh-what are you…” When her gaze reached my c**k hanging between my thighs, her cheeks flushed bright red. “Oh my…” I grabbed her upper arm and pulled her into the classics building, slamming and locking the door behind us. After bringing her to my office and locking that door as well in case the bastard caught our scent, I finally released her. Rubbing her arm, she looked everywhere except at me. “I just needed some fresh air.” “You could have gotten fresh air right outside your dorm. Why did you come all the way here?” She chewed the inside of her cheek and glanced down at my c**k again. “Because…” After crossing her legs and rubbing them togetherthe scent of her cunt rising in wavesshe turned away and shuffled toward the window. “I… smelled something good… um, you. Is that weird?” She groaned and covered her face with one hand. “Gosh, it sounds even weirder out loud.” I rummaged through my closet, pulled out spare clothes, and tugged them on. Then I stepped closer and gripped her waist from behind. “It is not weird,” I murmured against her ear. To a human it might have seemed strange. But this was the mate bond taking full effect. It was strong enough to affect even humans. She stayed silent for a long time, then cleared her throat. “Why are you covered in blood?” she asked, her voice tense and waiting for an answer. Yet she still did not turn to face me. It was almost as if she was afraid. I swallowed hard, desperately wanting to tell her what I was and what she meant to me. It had been barely a week and my mate was already driving me insane. I wanted to keep her safe by any means necessary, and staying quiet until Alpha Draven disappeared was the safest option. The more she knew, the less safe she would be. “That is a story for another day.” “Are you okay?” “Yes, Clara,” I said, dragging my nose up the side of her neck and inhaling her sweet scent. My shoulders relaxed at the smell, easing tension all the way to my core. I had never felt so many emotions from a single scent before. Clara remained quiet for a few more moments, her body still tense in front of me. “What is wrong?” I murmured into her ear. “I…” She paused and curled her fingers against the windowsill. “I have another question.” “About what?” “Mythology.” “What is it, Clara? You can ask me anything.” She turned around and stared deeply into my eyes with her intense ones. Nervously she swallowed and chewed on her lip. “Do you believe in supernatural creatures, like… lycans and werewolves?”
