Chapter 5

The morning's peculiar events replayed in my mind during the drive to the studio. Liam's unexpected arrival, the unsettling gaze of the other man, and the hurried packing of my belongings left me with a swirl of confusing emotions. I wasn't sure how to process what had transpired or if I even desired a repeat of the situation. As we pulled into the familiar parking lot of the studio, I navigated my car into its designated space, the crunch of tires on the gravel momentarily silencing my thoughts. With a sigh, I gathered my essential work items – my trusty laptop bag, the well-worn camera bag that held my creative tools, and my everyday purse containing the usual assortment of personal effects. Stepping out of the car, the Texas sun already beginning to assert its presence, I secured the vehicle and made my way to the studio's front entrance. The cool metal of the key felt familiar in my hand as I unlocked the door and stepped inside, the quiet of the still-closed studio enveloping me. Ensuring security, I re-locked the door behind me before heading towards my office. The familiar path led me down the short hallway, my footsteps echoing softly on the polished concrete floor. Reaching the doorway, I flicked the light switch, the fluorescent bulbs above casting a bright glow over the organized chaos of my workspace. I placed my bags on the surface of my desk, a familiar anchor in the day ahead. My routine then took over, a well-established sequence of tasks designed to prepare the studio for the day's appointments. I walked through each of the rooms, a silent inspector ensuring everything was in its proper place. The soft hum of the ventilation system was the only sound accompanying my rounds. I checked that each room was meticulously cleaned, the surfaces dust-free and the floors recently mopped. My attention then turned to the appointment documents, verifying that the correct files were present in each designated space, ready for the clients who would soon arrive. The small details mattered. In the restroom, I confirmed the soap dispenser was full, a fresh roll of toilet paper was in place, and the backup basket on the shelf held an ample supply. A quick check of the drawer where I kept feminine hygiene products revealed the current stock and allowed me to mentally note any items that needed replenishing on the next grocery run. Returning to the sanctuary of my office, I retrieved my laptop from its padded case, placing it carefully on my desk. The power button was pressed, and the familiar whir of the machine starting filled the quiet room. While the computer went through its booting sequence, my attention shifted to a simple notepad. With a pen in hand, I began to compile a detailed grocery list, not just for the studio's restroom and supply closet, but also for any other necessities that had come to mind during my morning preparations. My morning began with the familiar ritual of checking emails. Among the usual influx, one message stood out. It was from a client expressing confusion regarding her scheduled session. Apparently, a misunderstanding had occurred during booking, and she requested a call back once the office opened. I promptly picked up the phone and dialed her number, eager to clarify the situation and offer assistance. Upon connecting, she explained that her intention was to book a boudoir session at our remote location, not the main studio. I empathized with the mix-up and assured her that we could certainly reschedule. However, I also had to inform her about our policy regarding last-minute changes, which unfortunately involved a charge since her appointment was scheduled for today. To mitigate her disappointment, I assured her that as a gesture of goodwill, I would ensure she received extra images as part of her rescheduled session, compensating in a way since the fee couldn't be waived. After confirming her preferred date and time for the remote location and double-checking all the details, I ended the call, hoping she felt reassured and valued. With that matter addressed, I rose from my desk and headed towards the front entrance. The photographers were due to arrive soon to begin their day of scheduled appointments, so I unlocked the door in anticipation of their arrival. Returning to the office, my focus shifted to ensuring the smooth operation of the studio behind the scenes. I pulled up our inventory spreadsheet on my computer, ready to assess our current stock levels and identify any items that needed replenishing. Finding a comfortable spot on the floor, with my laptop positioned in front of me, I began a systematic check. First on the list was printer paper – both the standard variety and the various types of photo paper we used. I peered into the storage cabinets, noting the quantities of each. Next, I meticulously examined the ink cartridges for all our printers, making sure we had ample запас to avoid any interruptions during print jobs. I then turned my attention to the supply of essential stationery, counting the pens and ensuring we had a sufficient number readily available. My business cards were another crucial item to verify; I carefully checked the remaining stacks to prevent running out. A quick glance at the shelf where I kept snacks for myself and the team revealed dwindling supplies. Remembering the bag I had brought from home, I retrieved it and neatly arranged the snacks in their designated spots. Moving on, I opened the small refrigerator in the office to check our stock of water bottles, which we provide for both clients and employees. As suspected, the supply was running low. I made a mental note to add water to the growing list of items needing a trip to the store. As I walked past the various shooting rooms, where the photographers were busily setting up for their first appointments, I paused to ask them about their lunch preferences. Today was Monday, one of the days I made it a point to provide lunch for the team as a small gesture of appreciation. Gathering their requests, I added those items to my mental shopping list, ensuring everyone would have a satisfying midday meal. The morning, though starting with a client issue, was now settling into the familiar rhythm of ensuring the studio was well-prepared and our team was taken care of.
