It was late. The kind of quiet that seeps into the walls and drapes itself over every surface. Nadyia hadn’t meant to fall asleep on the couch. The warmth of the soft blanket, the low hum of the baby monitor, and the distant murmur of Liam and Noah talking in the kitchen had all lulled her into something peaceful. When she opened her eyes, the room was dim, lit only by the soft golden spill from the hallway. She blinked, adjusting, then heard footsteps.
