3 years later...
"Wolfie girl! So help me God! If you don't get that damn dog, I'll take him off!" Momma Beth booms. I look around and Max is hiding under the table shaking.
"What did he do?" I question.
"He pissed on my rug!" Momma Beth angerly accuses. I walk into the kitchen and crouch down on the floor and sniff the wet spot. I chuckle slightly before meeting her gaze and my smile fades. I clear my throat.
"Momma Beth, that ain't pee. That's sweet tea." I say quietly.
"Like hell that's sweet tea! Sadie! Get in here!" Momma Beth was on a mission this morning.
"Granny what in the hell are you goin on about? It's eleven at night!" Sadie looked under the table at a shaking Max and then at me.
"Momma Beth thinks Max peed on the rug." I whispered.
"I don't think it! I know it dammit! That dog is doin it to spite me!" Momma Beth bellows.
"God dammit Granny! I spilt sweet tea there earlier. Now calm down. River, please take poor little Max outside before he really does piss on the rug." Sadie ran a hand down her face. Momma Beth just stood with her mouth open like a fish.
"Yes, ma'am. Come here Max." Max was a ninty pound, blue pit with gray eyes. For such a large animal he was such a coward. He waddled out from under the table and followed me outside.
"Sorry Max. Momma Beth just doesn't like you." I say as I rub his head. He just leans into me and lays his big head on my knee. Sadie had taken me to one of her coworkers houses on my thirteenth birthday and told me I could have anyone of the puppies he had. Some were white and some were black but Max was the only blue one. He was the runt of the litter. He looked sickly and tiny compared to the other puppies but from the second I laid eyes on him I knew I was going to bring him home. Max has been my best friend ever since. If truth be told, he was my only friend.
I spent about an hour outside with Max before bringing him inside and up the stairs to my room. I had grown use to these out burst of Momma Beth. Blue said it was because we were natural enemies and she had to let her aggression out sometimes. But I just felt like she didn't like dogs.
I was finishing up my homework when I heard Momma Beth and Sadie talking down stairs.
"Zachariah is taking over for Mr.Thompson." Sadie told Momma Beth.
"He's just a boy. What's Mr.Thompson thinking?" Momma Beth scolded.
"Granny, you know it's different for them. At eighteen werewolves are grown adults and take over for their Daddies." Sadie said with a sigh. Werewolves? My ears perked up.
"Hmph! Not Wolfie girl. She's goin to be a doctor. Did she tell you?" Momma Beth chuckled.
"A doctor? Oh my! She will make us proud. I love that little girl. I hope she stays our little girl." My chest swelled with pride.
"Whatchoo mean? Of course, she's always gonna be our Wolfie girl." I heard Sadie sigh.
"At eighteen, they're full grown. What if she leaves us?" I didn't miss the break in Sadie's voice and my heart clenched. I'd never leave Momma Beth and Sadie.
"Shhh now. You gonna jinx things. Get out of your head Sadie Lynn. She's gonna be a big fancy doctor and then she's gonna take care of Momma Beth. Maybe I'll get a dog and it will piss on her rug." Sadie laughed loudly.
"Granny, Max didn't piss on your rug. You need to apologize to him."
"I ain't apologizing to no dog." Momma Beth said sourly. I giggled to myself. Max snored loudly from his bed in the corner of my room. I packed my books back up and stripped down before crawling into bed.
