Chapter 5 Mr.Wolfie

995 Words
After that first heat, I noticed my body changing rapidly. My hips widened and my breast grew larger. Every day I looked in the mirror I saw more and more of my mother but my eyes never changed. My eyes were still the crystal blue of my father. Upon returning to school, I noticed more lingering glances from the males. I had always blended into the furniture but since my "heat" the boys smiled more at me and girls seemed to glare. The attention I was receiving made me incredibly uncomfortable. I asked Momma Beth if I could just be home schooled but she wouldn't have it. "You can't be a doctor if you're home schooled." And that was that. Everyday I would come home and take Max out for a walk, then come home, eat, do my home work and head to bed. My routine was monotonous but I liked it. One day after school there was a knock on the door. I answered it to find a tall man with dark hair and startling blue eyes. He looked wiry and rugged in a handsome kind of way. "Can I help you?" I asked. The man just stared at me with a slack jaw expression. "Sir, can I help you?" Still the man said nothing. I shrugged my shoulders and started to shut the door when the man put his hand on the door to stop it. I looked up at him with an annoyed expression. "Sir?" "I'm sorry ma'am. I'm looking for Sadie? Is she here by chance?" His voice was deep and it vibrated in his chest. He wore a crooked smile and his eyes crinkled up around the edges. "Hold on a minute. MOMMA! THERE'S SOME MAN HERE FOR YOU!" I yelled. "Zachariah... my name is Zachariah." The man said. Why was that familiar? "MOMMA! SOME MAN NAMED ZACHARIAH IS HERE FOR YOU!" I yelled. Sadie appeared in the door way. "Why young Mr.Thompson! What brings you way out here? Is something wrong?" Sadie looked worried. "Well... um... I might have made a mistake with an order and I didn't want my dad to find out..." Zachariah trailed off as his eyes met mine and my heart skipped a beat. "Well, that's quite all right Mr.Thompson. I'm sure I can fix it." Sadie said with a smile. "But I promise you that if you don't take your eyes off my daughter, nothing will fix you when I'm done with you, son." Momma Beth came out of no where. Zachariah's eyes darted to Momma Beth's. Her eyes were hard and without fear. I heard a low growl coming from the strange man on our door step. I looked at him curiously. "River, get on upstairs and do your home work." Momma Beth said without looking at me. She never called me River. I looked between her and Zachariah. "Yes, ma'am. " I said and turned and went up stairs. I immediately placed my ear on my door. Listening intently at the conversation. "You listen to me, Mr.Wolf. You stay the hell away from River. You hear me?" Momma Beth demanded. "Ma'am, I was just-" "You was just doin nothin. You was just stayin the hell away from my daughter! She's a good girl. She ain't caused no trouble. Now, you get the hell off my porch or I'll get you off my porch!" "Granny! You can't ta-" "No, it's fine. I need to be going anyway. Sadie, do you think you can help me with my problem though? Dad will kill me if he finds out about the order I screwed up. It's a big client." "Oh no... its not the Black's is it?" Sadie sounded worried. "Yep." Zachariah said popping the "p". "Let's go. Granny, I'll be back later." "It was nice to meet you, Ms.-" "Ms.None of your damn business!" Momma Beth said in a very sassy tone. "God dammit Granny." Zachariah chuckled and I heard the crunching of gravel as they walked toward his car. The stairs began to creak and I knew it was Momma Beth checking on me so I swiftly grabbed a book and began pretending to read it. My door opened and I looked up. Momma Beth looked like she had aged ten years as she dropped herself onto my bed. "Wolfie girl, stay away from that boy. You hear me?" "Yes, ma'am... but why?" She sighed before looking at me. "Because... I dont trust that family." "But Sadie works for them." "I know she does and I hate that she does." She said bitterly. I stared out the window for a second before gathering all my courage. "Momma Beth, why don't you trust them? Is it because their werewolves? Because... I'm a werewolf too..." I said quietly. I felt her strong hand on my chin and she tilted it up so I was looking at her. "Wolfie girl, you are nothing like the rest of those werewolves. You have a heart of gold. The rest of them stomp out anything good in this world. They are violent and cruel. They take, take, take and crush anything that's different. Just look at how they did you. Just a little skinny child when we found you. How they could do that to their own kind is beyond me..." She had a far away look in her eyes. Like she was remembering something excruciating. I could feel there was something more. "Momma Beth, what did they do to you?" I could see the mist cloud her coffee brown eyes. "They took my baby... Sadie's daddy... and her momma. They didnt do nothin. We're witches. That was enough. That Wes Thompson... Zachariah's father. He's a God damn brute!" Tears ran down the old woman's haggard face. Now, I understood why she hated werewolves so much. My heart ached for her. I wrapped my arms around her and tried my best to pull all her broken pieces back together.
