The silence after the Alpha left didn’t feel like safety.
It felt like a warning.
Elara stood in the middle of the room, staring at the doorway long after he disappeared. Her body was still, but inside—everything felt wrong.
Unsteady.
Unbalanced.
Like something had been shaken loose… and hadn’t settled back.
“Elara…”
Kael’s voice was weak, but it pulled her back.
She turned quickly and rushed to his side again. “Hey, don’t move—you’re still hurt.”
“I’ve been worse,” he muttered, trying to sit up.
“You’re lying,” she said softly.
He gave a faint, tired smirk. “Yeah… a little.”
For a moment, things felt normal. Almost.
But then—
A sharp pain hit her chest.
Elara froze.
Her breath caught mid-air.
“What… was that…” she whispered.
Her mother looked at her instantly. “Elara?”
Another wave hit.
Stronger.
It spread through her body like fire, fast and overwhelming.
She staggered back.
“Elara!” Kael tried to get up again.
“Don’t—!” she gasped, holding up a trembling hand. “Don’t come near me…”
Something was wrong.
Very wrong.
Her vision flickered.
For a second, the room blurred—
Then sharpened too much.
Every detail became painfully clear.
Every sound—loud.
Too loud.
Her heartbeat thundered in her ears.
Her breathing deepened, uneven, almost… growling.
“Elara, look at me,” her mother said firmly. “What’s happening?”
“I don’t know!” she cried.
Another surge of energy ripped through her.
This time—
It didn’t feel balanced.
It didn’t feel calm.
It felt wild.
Uncontrolled.
Her fingers curled involuntarily—
Claws snapped out.
Not smoothly like before.
Violently.
Her body jerked as the transformation tried to take over.
“Stop…” she whispered. “Stop…”
But it didn’t listen.
Kael’s eyes widened. “She’s losing control.”
Her mother stepped forward cautiously. “Elara, you have to focus—”
“I am trying!” she snapped, her voice cracking—
But something in it had changed.
It was deeper.
Rougher.
Not fully hers.
The power surged again.
Stronger.
Faster.
Her eyes flashed gold—bright, unstable, flickering between control and chaos.
The room seemed to pulse around her.
The walls.
The air.
Everything reacting to her.
“Elara, breathe,” Kael said, forcing himself closer despite the pain. “You’ve done this before.”
“No…” she shook her head, backing away. “This is different…”
And it was.
Before, she had controlled it.
Now—
It was controlling her.
A low growl escaped her throat.
She froze.
That wasn’t intentional.
“That’s not me…” she whispered.
Her mother’s voice was calm—but urgent. “It is you. But it’s the part you’re not balancing.”
“I can’t—”
“Yes, you can!”
But Elara didn’t believe it.
Not this time.
Another wave hit—
And this time, she dropped to her knees.
Her body shook violently as the transformation pushed harder.
Her bones ached.
Her muscles tightened.
Her senses spiraled out of control.
“I can’t hold it!” she cried.
Kael moved closer again.
“Elara, listen to me,” he said, his voice firm despite his condition.
Her head snapped toward him.
Her golden eyes locked onto his.
Wild.
Unstable.
For a split second—
He wasn’t Kael.
He was prey.
“Elara…”
His voice grounded her—just a little.
But it wasn’t enough.
The instinct surged again.
Stronger.
Darker.
“Get back!” her mother shouted.
Too late.
Elara moved.
Fast.
Too fast.
She lunged forward—
Not fully in control.
Not fully aware.
Kael didn’t fight her.
Even as she slammed into him, knocking him back.
“Elara—!”
Her claws hovered dangerously close to him.
Her breathing was heavy.
Erratic.
Her mind split between two voices.
One screaming to stop.
The other—
Urging her forward.
“Fight it!” Kael said, his voice steady even now.
“I’m trying!” she cried—but it came out half-growl.
Her body trembled above him.
For a moment—
It could go either way.
Then—
Her mother stepped in.
“Elara!”
The voice cut through everything.
Sharp.
Familiar.
Grounding.
Elara froze.
Her claws shaking.
Her breathing uneven.
Her vision clearing—just a little.
“Mom…”
The word came out broken.
Human.
“Look at me,” her mother said softly now.
Elara turned slowly.
Golden eyes met hers.
“Balance,” her mother reminded. “Not control. Not fear.”
Elara’s chest rose and fell rapidly.
“It’s too strong…”
“No,” her mother said gently. “You’re just weaker right now.”
That hit.
Because it was true.
Elara closed her eyes.
Forcing herself to breathe.
To feel.
To separate the chaos from herself.
It was harder this time.
Much harder.
But slowly—
Very slowly—
The storm inside her began to quiet.
Her claws retracted shakily.
Her breathing slowed.
The glow in her eyes dimmed.
And then—
She collapsed.
Kael caught her before she hit the ground.
“Elara!”
She didn’t respond.
Her body was still.
Too still.
Her mother rushed forward, kneeling beside them.
“She’s exhausted,” she said quickly.
Kael looked down at Elara, his expression tight with worry.
“That wasn’t just exhaustion,” he said.
Her mother didn’t argue.
Because they both knew the truth.
Kael’s voice dropped.
“She’s losing balance.”
A pause.
“And if that keeps happening…”
Her mother finished quietly:
“She won’t be able to tell where the wolf ends… and she begins.”
Silence filled the room again.
Heavy.
Dangerous.
Kael looked down at Elara, his jaw tightening.
“Then we fix it,” he said.
Her mother nodded slowly.
“Yes…”
A pause.
“Before the Alpha comes back.”
Elara stirred slightly—but didn’t wake.
Her breathing was calm now.
Peaceful.
But beneath it—
Something restless still lingered.
Waiting.
