Chapter 6:The Alpha's Claim

1030 Words
The forest went still. Not quiet—still. Like everything inside it had frozen in fear. Elara felt it instantly. The air grew heavier, pressing against her chest, making it hard to breathe. Even the wind seemed to disappear, as if the night itself was holding back. Kael’s body went rigid beside her. “He’s here,” he said under his breath. Elara’s heart dropped. “Already?” A slow, deliberate crunch of leaves echoed from the darkness ahead. One step. Then another. Not rushed. Not hunting. Confident. Elara’s pulse pounded in her ears as a figure emerged from between the trees. At first, he looked human—a tall man dressed in dark clothing, his presence calm but overwhelming. But there was something wrong. Something unnatural. His eyes. They glowed. Not amber. A deep, burning red. Elara instinctively stepped back. “That’s him?” she whispered. Kael didn’t take his eyes off the man. “Don’t speak,” he muttered. The man stopped a few feet away, his gaze locking directly onto Elara. For a moment, no one moved. Then—he smiled. It wasn’t warm. It was dangerous. “So,” the Alpha said, his voice smooth and controlled, yet carrying an edge of power that seemed to vibrate through the air. “The rumors are true.” Elara felt her chest tighten. His eyes never left her. “Golden eyes,” he continued, taking a slow step closer. “I haven’t seen that in a very long time.” Kael stepped in front of her instantly, blocking his view. “Stay away from her.” The Alpha’s smile widened slightly. “Kael.” The way he said his name sent a chill down Elara’s spine. “You’ve been busy,” the Alpha added. “Hiding something this… valuable.” “She’s not yours,” Kael said sharply. The Alpha tilted his head, amused. “Everything in this forest belongs to me.” Elara’s fear spiked—but beneath it, that same wild energy stirred again. Reacting. Watching. The Alpha’s gaze flickered back to her, noticing. “Interesting,” he murmured. Kael’s voice dropped to a warning growl. “Don’t.” But it was too late. The Alpha moved. So fast Elara barely saw it. One second he was standing still— The next, he was right in front of her. She gasped, stumbling back, but his presence surrounded her like a shadow. “Let me see you,” he said softly. Elara’s heart raced, but something inside her pushed back. “No.” The word slipped out before she could stop it. The Alpha paused. For the first time, his expression shifted—surprise flickering across his face. Then… interest. “You resist,” he said. “Even now.” Elara swallowed hard, forcing herself not to look away. “I said no.” For a brief second, the forest seemed to tremble. Then Kael lunged, grabbing her arm and pulling her back. “Don’t engage him!” he snapped. The Alpha straightened slowly, his gaze darkening. “You forget your place, Kael,” he said, his voice colder now. “I know exactly where I stand,” Kael shot back. “Do you?” The Alpha took a step forward—and the ground beneath them seemed to vibrate with the force of it. Elara’s instincts screamed. Danger. Real danger. Her chest burned again, the power rising fast, uncontrollable. The Alpha noticed immediately. “Yes…” he murmured. “There it is.” Elara clenched her fists as her eyes flickered gold again. “I am not yours,” she said, her voice shaking but firm. The Alpha’s lips curved into a slow, dangerous smile. “You misunderstand.” He stepped closer. “I don’t want to own you.” A pause. “I want to lead you.” Elara froze. Kael’s grip on her tightened. “Don’t listen to him.” But the Alpha continued, his voice smooth, almost persuasive. “You feel it, don’t you?” he said to Elara. “The power. The connection. You’re not like them.” Her breath hitched. “You were born for more,” he added. “For dominance. For control.” Elara shook her head. “No…” “You commanded wolves on your first night,” he said. “Do you have any idea what that means?” She didn’t answer. Because part of her… wanted to know. The Alpha’s eyes gleamed. He could see it. “That power will destroy you if you don’t learn to use it,” he said quietly. “Or worse…” He leaned in slightly. “It will fall into the wrong hands.” Kael stepped forward, placing himself fully between them. “She’s not going with you.” The Alpha sighed softly, almost disappointed. “Still defiant.” Then his gaze hardened. “Very well.” The temperature seemed to drop instantly. “But understand this,” he said, his voice no longer calm—but commanding. “She doesn’t get to choose forever.” Elara’s heart pounded. The Alpha’s red eyes locked onto hers one last time. “When the moon rises again,” he said, “you will come to me.” A pause. “Or I will come for you.” Silence. Then—he stepped back. And just like that… he was gone. No sound. No trace. Only the lingering weight of his presence remained. Elara’s legs gave out, and she dropped to the ground, breathing hard. Kael knelt beside her immediately. “Hey—look at me. You’re okay.” She shook her head, panic creeping in. “He… he knows.” “I know,” Kael said. “He’s going to come back,” she whispered. Kael didn’t deny it. Instead, he said something that made her chest tighten even more: “Which means we don’t have much time.” Elara looked up at him, fear and determination mixing in her eyes. “Time for what?” Kael’s expression turned serious. “To make sure,” he said, “that when he does—” “You’re strong enough to face him.”
