Chapter 19:Divided Strength

1174 Words
The forest no longer felt like a place of growth. It felt like a test. One Elara was slowly beginning to fail. Morning came quietly, but there was no peace in it. A thin mist hovered over the ground as Elara stood alone in the clearing, her arms hanging stiffly at her sides. The same clearing. The same place she had trained with Kael. But now— It felt empty. Wrong. “Again,” she whispered to herself. Her voice sounded small in the open space. She closed her eyes, trying to focus. Trying to feel that balance her mother had taught her. The calm beneath the chaos. The steady pull of the moon. For a moment— It was there. Soft. Familiar. Then it slipped. Her breath hitched as the energy surged too quickly. Not smooth. Not controlled. Sharp. Her claws snapped out suddenly. “Too fast,” she muttered, forcing herself to breathe. “Slow down… slow down…” But the rhythm wasn’t there anymore. It used to come easier when Kael was near. She hated admitting that. Elara opened her eyes, staring at her hands. They trembled. Not from fear. From imbalance. “I can do this,” she said under her breath. She had to. Because the alternative— The vision— Wasn’t something she could allow. “Focus,” she told herself again. She stepped forward, shifting her stance, trying to remember everything. Movement. Balance. Control. She lunged forward— But her body reacted too quickly. Too aggressively. Her footing slipped. She hit the ground hard. Frustration burned through her chest. “Why isn’t this working?!” Her voice echoed in the clearing. No answer came. Because she was alone. Across the forest— Kael wasn’t doing much better. He stood near the edge of a rocky ridge, his breathing steady—but his mind far from it. He struck forward, practicing the same movements over and over. Precise. Controlled. But something was off. Every movement felt heavier. Slower. Like his body wasn’t fully responding. He clenched his jaw, pushing harder. Again. Again. Again. His strike landed against a tree—hard enough to crack the bark. But instead of satisfaction— There was irritation. “Focus,” he muttered. But it wasn’t working. Because no matter what he did— His thoughts kept going back to her. Elara. He could feel it. Even from this distance. The bond between them hadn’t disappeared. It had… stretched. And it didn’t feel right. Kael exhaled slowly, pressing a hand to his chest. There was a faint pull there. Uneven. Unstable. “She’s struggling,” he said quietly. Back in the clearing— Elara pushed herself up again, her breathing uneven. Her body felt heavier now. Every attempt drained her more than the last. “Again…” She barely had the strength to say it. She closed her eyes once more. Reached for the power. This time— It came too fast. A violent surge ripped through her, forcing her to her knees. “Stop—!” Her claws extended sharply. Her eyes flashed gold—too bright, too unstable. Her breathing turned into a low, uneven growl. “No… not again…” The control slipped. Just like before. Her body jerked as the transformation tried to take over. Not balanced. Not steady. Wild. She forced herself to breathe. “To balance… not fight…” she whispered, remembering her mother’s words. But it wasn’t enough. Because something was missing. And she knew what it was. Kael felt it instantly. The moment her control broke— He staggered slightly. His hand shot to his side, his breath catching sharply. “What—” A wave of pain hit him out of nowhere. Not physical. But connected. “Elara…” He didn’t hesitate. Back in the clearing— Elara gasped as the energy surged again. Stronger this time. Uncontrolled. Her vision blurred. Her body trembled violently. “I can’t—” The world around her sharpened suddenly. Too sharp. Every sound. Every movement. Her instincts flared. Wild. Dangerous. And then— She wasn’t alone anymore. A sound behind her. A branch snapping. Her head snapped toward it instantly. Her eyes— No longer calm. No longer balanced. Predatory. Kael broke into the clearing just in time to see it. “Elara—stop!” But she didn’t hear him. Not fully. Her body reacted first. She turned— And lunged. Kael barely had time to brace before she collided with him, knocking him back. The impact sent both of them to the ground. “Elara—!” Her claws pressed dangerously close to him again. Her breathing heavy. Erratic. Her eyes locked onto his— But there was no recognition at first. Only instinct. Only power. “Elara…” His voice was steady. Grounding. Something flickered. Her grip faltered slightly. “Kael…” Her voice came out broken. Half-growl. Half-human. “I didn’t mean—” Her body trembled again. The control slipping—then returning—then slipping again. Kael didn’t move. Didn’t push her away. “Breathe,” he said quietly. “I can’t—” “Yes, you can.” Her hands shook above him. “You’ve done it before.” “But not like this…” Her voice cracked. “I feel like I’m breaking…” That hit him harder than anything else. “Then stop doing this alone,” he said. Silence. Her eyes flickered again. Gold—then softer. Then gold again. “You shouldn’t be here…” she whispered. “And you shouldn’t be doing this without me.” The words hung between them. Because they were both right. And both wrong. Slowly— Very slowly— Elara’s claws began to retract. Her breathing steadied. The wildness faded. But the exhaustion hit immediately after. Her body gave out. She collapsed forward— And Kael caught her again. Silence filled the clearing. Elara rested against him, too weak to move. Her breathing soft. Uneven—but human. “I thought… staying away would fix it…” she whispered. Kael exhaled slowly. “It didn’t.” A pause. “It made it worse.” Elara closed her eyes. “I almost hurt you again…” Kael shook his head slightly. “But you didn’t.” “That’s not enough,” she said quietly. Silence stretched between them again. Then— Kael spoke. “We’re stronger together.” Elara didn’t respond immediately. Because she already knew that. She just didn’t want it to be true. Finally— She let out a slow breath. “I hate this,” she admitted softly. Kael almost smiled. “Yeah…” A pause. “Me too.” But neither of them moved. Because even now— Even after everything— They stayed close. And for the first time since they separated— The bond between them didn’t feel strained. It felt… steady. Not perfect. Not fixed. But stronger than distance. And that scared Elara… Almost as much as it gave her hope.
