Chapter 5:The Moon's Chosen

. The forest was quieter now. Too quiet. Elera walked beside Kael, her steps slow, her body still weak from what had just happened. Every now and then, she glanced down at her hands, half-expecting the claws to return. “They listened to me,” she said finally, her voice soft but filled with confusion. “Why did they stop?” Kael didn’t answer immediately. His jaw tightened slightly, like he was choosing his words carefully. “They don’t listen to just anyone,” he said. Elara frowned. “But I didn’t do anything.” Kael stopped walking. “You did,” he said, turning to face her. “You commanded them.” The word sent a strange chill through her. “I didn’t command anyone,” she said quickly. “You did,” he repeated. “And they obeyed.” Elera shook her head, stepping back. “That doesn’t make sense. I just… told them to leave.” Kael’s amber eyes darkened. “Exactly.” Silence fell between them. A cold wind passed through the trees, carrying the faint scent of something ancient… something watching. Elera wrapped her arms around herself. “You said I might be something more,” she said. “What does that mean?” Kael hesitated. For the first time since she met him, he looked uncertain. “There are stories,” he said slowly. “Old ones. Most of us think they’re just legends.” Elera’s heart began to pound again. “What kind of stories?” Kael glanced up at the moon, its silver light reflecting in his eyes. “About a werewolf who isn’t bound by the curse… but chosen by it.” Elera felt her breath catch. “A chosen werewolf?” “They call it The Moon’s Chosen,” Kael said. “Someone born under a rare lunar alignment. Not made by a bite. Not forced into it.” Elera’s mind raced. “But… I was never bitten.” “I know,” Kael said quietly. The realization hit her like a wave. All this time… this had been inside her? “Then why now?” she asked, her voice trembling. Kael stepped closer, lowering his voice. “Because the time has come.” “That doesn’t explain anything!” Elara snapped, frustration rising. “Why me? What makes me different?” Kael looked at her, really looked at her this time. “When you changed,” he said, “you didn’t lose control.” Elera blinked. “You felt the power,” he continued, “but you held onto yourself. Most of us… we don’t get that choice. The first time we transform, we become the wolf completely.” Elara remembered the feeling—the wild instinct, the urge to fight, to let go. “I almost lost it,” she whispered. “But you didn’t,” Kael said firmly. He took another step closer. “And then there’s this…” Before she could react, Kael reached out and gently lifted her chin, turning her face toward the moonlight. “Look at your eyes,” he said. Elera froze. She didn’t need a mirror to know. She could feel it. A faint warmth behind her eyes. “Golden,” Kael murmured. “Not amber. Not like ours.” Elara’s chest tightened. “What does that mean?” Kael let go, his expression serious now. “It means you’re not just one of us.” A distant rumble echoed through the forest—not thunder, but something deeper. Elara’s pulse quickened. “Then what am I?” Kael’s gaze shifted toward the darkness beyond the trees, as if he could sense something approaching. “You’re the one the packs have been waiting for,” he said. Her stomach dropped. “Waiting for… why?” Kael didn’t answer right away. Instead, he said something that made her blood run cold: “Some will follow you.” A pause. “And some will try to kill you before you become too powerful.” Elara took a step back, shaking her head. “This is insane… I don’t want any of this.” Kael’s voice softened, but there was no denying the truth in it. “It doesn’t matter what you want anymore.” The wind picked up again, stronger this time. Leaves rustled violently, and somewhere in the distance, another howl echoed—louder, sharper, filled with warning. Kael’s expression darkened. “They know,” he said. Elera’s heart skipped. “Who knows?” “The Alpha.” The word hung heavy in the air. Elara swallowed hard. “And that’s… bad?” Kael let out a humorless breath. “The Alpha doesn’t believe in legends,” he said. “Only power.” A chill ran down her spine. “And if he thinks you have it…” Elera’s voice came out as a whisper. “What will he do?” Kael met her gaze, his eyes intense. “He’ll come for you.” Silence fell again—but this time, it wasn’t calm. It was a warning. Elera looked up at the moon, its glow stronger than ever, almost like it was watching her. Choosing her. The Moon’s Chosen. The words echoed in her mind, heavy with meaning she didn’t yet understand. But one thing was clear now. This wasn’t just a curse. It was something bigger. Something dangerous. And whether she was ready or not— She was at the center of it all.
