Chapter 2:The Aweakinig Within

739 Words
Elera did not remember how she made it back home. One moment she had been in the forest, frozen beneath the moonlight, and the next she was standing in her room, her back pressed against the door, her chest rising and falling in uneven breaths. Her hands trembled as she looked down at them, half-expecting to see something different—something… not human. But they looked the same. Yet nothing felt the same. A dull ache spread through her body, deep in her bones, like something inside her was stretching, waking up after a long, restless sleep. She winced, clutching her arm. “What… is happening to me?” she whispered. Her reflection caught her eye in the mirror across the room. Slowly, cautiously, she stepped closer. At first, everything seemed normal—her dark hair falling over her shoulders, her wide eyes still filled with fear. But then she noticed it. Her eyes. For just a second, they flickered. A flash of gold. Elera stumbled back, her heart slamming against her ribs. “No… no, that’s not possible.” She rushed closer again, gripping the edge of the dresser as she leaned in. Her reflection stared back at her, unchanged now—but she knew what she had seen. She wasn’t imagining it. A sudden sound downstairs made her freeze. Footsteps. Slow, deliberate. “Ariel?” Her mother’s voice. Panic surged through her. She quickly stepped away from the mirror, trying to steady her breathing. “Y-Yes?” Her bedroom door creaked open, and her mother stood there, her expression unreadable. “Where were you?” “I… I couldn’t sleep,” Ariel replied quickly. “I just went outside for some air.” Her mother’s eyes lingered on her for a moment too long, as if searching for something beneath the surface. Then she sighed softly. “You shouldn’t wander at night. Not here.” There was something in her tone—something serious, almost warning. Ariel swallowed. “Why?” A pause. Then her mother shook her head. “Just… be careful. Get some rest.” She turned and left before Elera could ask anything more. The door closed with a soft click, but the silence that followed felt heavier than before. She sat on her bed, her thoughts racing. Her mother knew something. She had to. The way she looked at her… it wasn’t normal. And then there was the wolf. Those eyes. That voice. It’s time. She pressed her hands against her temples. None of it made sense. And yet, deep down, a terrifying truth was beginning to form—a truth she didn’t want to accept. Another wave of pain shot through her body. Stronger this time. She gasped, doubling over as the sensation spread through her chest, her arms, her legs. It wasn’t just pain—it was power, wild and uncontrollable, surging through her veins. Her senses sharpened suddenly. She could hear everything. The ticking of the clock downstairs. The faint whisper of the wind outside. Even her mother’s soft footsteps moving across the floor below. And then— A heartbeat. Not hers. Ariel's head snapped toward the window. Her breath caught. She could feel it—someone, or something, was out there. Watching. Waiting. Drawn once again, she moved toward the window, her body acting on instinct. Her fingers trembled as she pulled the curtain aside. At first, there was nothing. Then, from the shadows near the trees… movement. The same glowing amber eyes stared back at her. Elera's breath hitched. “You…” The creature stepped forward just enough for the moonlight to touch its form. Powerful. Silent. Unafraid. And somehow… familiar. Her heart pounded, but this time, it wasn’t just fear. It was recognition. The burning sensation returned, stronger than ever, and she gripped the windowsill to steady herself. Her reflection faintly appeared in the glass—and once again, her eyes flickered gold. The wolf tilted its head, as if understanding. As if it had been waiting for this moment. And then, once more, the voice echoed in her mind: “You belong to the moon now.” Elera staggered back, shaking her head. “No… I don’t understand…” But deep inside, something answered. Something ancient. Something wild. And for the first time,Elera realized the truth she could no longer escape: The creature in the forest wasn’t just calling to her. It was calling her home.
