INTO THE FOREST

Chapter: Into the Forest The following morning, Emily, Jack, and Sarah stood at the edge of the dense forest described in Megan’s journal. The trees loomed overhead like ancient sentinels, their twisted branches blocking out the sunlight. A biting chill filled the air, unnatural for the time of year. “This is it,” Sarah said quietly, clutching the journal tightly. Jack scanned the tree line nervously. “Are we sure about this? If this guide even exists, why would they hide out here?” “Because they’re probably as afraid of this thing as we are,” Emily muttered, stepping forward. “Let’s just move. Staying in one place feels worse.” The directions in the journal were vague at best. “Follow the old hunter’s trail,” Sarah read aloud, her voice wavering. They found a faint path, overgrown and barely visible, snaking deeper into the woods. As they walked, the silence became oppressive. No birds chirped, no leaves rustled. It was as if the forest itself was holding its breath. “I don’t like this,” Jack said, glancing behind them for the third time. “None of us do,” Emily snapped, her nerves fraying. Hours passed, and the trail grew harder to follow. Just when doubt began to creep in, they spotted it—a faint wisp of smoke curling into the sky. “That has to be it,” Sarah said, her relief palpable. The cabin stood in a small clearing, weathered and leaning slightly to one side. The windows were dark, and the air around it felt thick with something unexplainable, like the weight of forgotten years. “Looks welcoming,” Jack muttered, his sarcasm doing little to hide his fear. Emily approached the door and knocked. The sound echoed, unnaturally loud in the silence. They waited, their breaths shallow, hearts racing. Finally, the door creaked open, revealing an older man with piercing eyes and a face etched with deep lines. “What do you want?” the man demanded, his voice gruff but steady. “We need help,” Sarah said quickly, holding up the journal. “You helped Megan’s family before. We’re cursed—just like she was.” The man’s expression darkened, and he stepped aside. “Come in. Quickly.” Inside, the cabin was cluttered with strange objects: jars filled with herbs, ancient books, and symbols scrawled on the walls. The man introduced himself as Elias. “If you’re here, it means the curse has taken hold. The Hunter doesn’t stop once it starts.” “We know,” Jack said, his frustration bubbling over. “How do we stop it?” Elias sighed. “You can’t. Not unless you’re willing to face it directly—and most who try don’t survive.” Sarah pressed him. “There has to be a way. The journal mentioned breaking the bond.” Elias hesitated before nodding. “There is. But it’s dangerous. And if you fail… The Hunter will take you faster.” “What do we need to do?” Emily asked, her voice firm despite the fear in her eyes. Elias stared at them, his gaze heavy. “You have to destroy the altar. The place where the curse began.” The friends exchanged uneasy glances. They knew this was only the beginning of a much darker journey.
