Chapter 1

761 Words
“This is so boring,” I lean over and whisper to my sister. We have been sitting in this godforsaken ballroom for two hours waiting for the rest of the guests to arrive. My parents insisted on having a ball for my eighteenth birthday so that I could meet some of the princes from the neighboring kingdoms. There is about three hundred people stuff into our home and I’m not allowed to talk to any of them.      “Tatum! Be quiet and sit up straight,” Mom commands. She turns her face back to the room and continues to keep her friendly smile on her face like she didn’t just yell at me. Everyone is stressed out at the moment because we have been waiting for the final family to arrive for the last hour. I’ve heard of fashionably late but this is just ridiculous. I’m starting to think that they will never show up until I hear trumpets coming from the entryway. I slide my eyes over the room until they land on the giant wooden doors across the room.     My mother grabs my arm and forces me and my sister, Maddie, to stand up. I shoot her a glare and she shrugs at me before stepping up to receive our guests. Father stands up with her and holds his arm out for her. Maddie looks at me as we go to stand on either side of our parents. When everyone sees us standing they all go silent and turn towards the doors. Two guards pull open the heavy wooden doors and the king and queen of the vampire kingdom glide into the room, their robes billowing around them. They step aside and my eyes meet a very distinct set of red eyes. There he was. In all his horrible and terrifying glory. His red eyes met my purple ones and it was like something clicked. Mother elbows my ribs quickly and I straighten my posture. I can feel everyone's eyes on my family as they wait for my mother to welcome the newcomers.     She clears her throat and begins, "welcome to our home. We are very glad that you could join us this evening for our daughter's birthday. Now that everyone is here we will move to the dining room and begin our dinner." There are a few murmurs that go around the room as people start filing into the dining room. I watch the white-haired vampires glide effortlessly into the room. Suddenly, the red-eyed prince turns back and stares at me. His eyes feel like they are reaching down into my soul and it makes me wonder what he is thinking. His father says something that grabs his attention and he turns to walk back with the rest of the group.      "Come girls, let's go join the party," mother says. Father links his arm with hers and they slowly make their way into the dining room. Maddie roughly pulls me aside and starts asking questions.     "Okay, I saw that look that you and that devil of a prince shared. What's up with you two?" I shake my head, my black hair swirling around my face.     "Nothing is going on. I've never even met the guy," She doesn't look convinced but lets it go. She nods her head before turning back and following our parents. I straighten out my deep purple dress and check my makeup in the closest mirror. I'm reapplying my lipstick when I see a set of piercing red eyes staring at me. "Can I help you?" I ask without turning around. I see him start walking up behind me and turn around. "What are you doing?" I'm slightly scared of him. His eyes have a wild and hungry look in them and his perfect lips have a small smirk.      He stops about ten feet from me and his face suddenly turns serious. I'm absolutely terrified at this point but I know I won't be able to get around him fast enough. "You're afraid of me," he says. His voice is soft and elegant with a hint of an accent that I can't place. I look down at my black heels and hides my hands in the folds of my dress while I try to regain my composure. Why is he here instead of the dining room and what does he want? I have a thousand questions running through my mind but there is one that I keep coming back to. Is he going to kill me?
