CHAPTER TWENTY-ONEThere were no aliens. There were no mother ships, no scout craft, no close encounters of any kind. There was only the Coast Guard. Lindsey didn’t care. They were as welcome as the aliens would have been. More welcome. He was lying in a hospital bed, suffering from a moderate case of shock and exposure. They kept him warm and dry and they fed him. In a few hours he’d be able to check out and get back to work, as good as new. Except that Hobart Lindsey didn’t feel as if he’d ever be good as new. He raised his hand and touched his face. The side of his head was swathed in bandages. He felt nothing. Had they pumped him full of painkillers? How much damage had ben Zinowicz done? How many blows had he landed with his stick?Then Lindsey glanced toward the bottom of his bed. H
