CHAPTER NINELindsey traveled home through the San Francisco night, clutching his briefcase for safety. A damp chill had fallen on the city, and he felt relieved to reach the underground station and climb aboard the train. He was almost happy when the train emerged from its plunge beneath the bay, into Oakland. He continued on, drove the last leg of the trip, and put his briefcase safely away. It still contained the fragile copy of Wow Comics—his first major prize in the case.
He felt weary and sore but not sleepy. He made himself a cup of tea and sat watching a sitcom rerun.
