“Cattleman’s Disease?”
Dr. Campe displayed her papers, including one signed by Jen agreeing to the surgery, and the x-ray of a lump between her neck and collarbone while she explained that it wasn’t cancer but the longer it stayed, it’d eventually morph into lymphoma. None of us wanted that to happen. There wasn’t much they knew about Cattlemen’s disease, how people caught the disease, if it was hereditary. Eventually, I zoned her out while holding Jen’s trembling hand tighter, smoothing back her hair comfortingly.
Tilting her neck upwards, Jen pointed to an irregular lump between her neck and collarbone I hadn’t noticed before. The breath in my lungs left speedily in a gasp, wondering why I never noticed. I turned around to Troy. “Did you know about this?” I asked.
