chapter six

1039 Words

Chapter Six I shouldn’t have stayed. That was the first thought that hit me the second I stepped out of the kitchen. My legs carried me down the hallway, but it didn’t feel like I was the one moving them. My mind was still back there—with him. With what I said. I can’t. I pressed my lips together, walking faster like I could outrun the weight of it. I didn’t just admit something to Ethan. I admitted it to myself. And that made it real. Too real. I pushed open the back door and stepped outside, the cool air hitting my skin instantly. It should’ve helped. It should’ve cleared my head. But it didn’t. If anything, it made everything sharper. I wrapped my arms around myself, staring out at the empty yard. The silence out here felt different from inside the house. Less suffocating.
