A Slice of Mystery

945 Words
Scene: The tall stranger holding the pizza box smiles warmly at Maya, leaving both her and Arjun curious about who he is and why he’s here. --- Arjun (crossing his arms): "Pizza delivery? At a pet shop? That’s… new." Maya (awkwardly): "I didn’t order any pizza." Stranger (smiling): "I know. This one’s on me. Consider it a welcome gift." Arjun (raising an eyebrow): "Welcome gift? From who?" Stranger (grinning): "From me. I’m Kabir." Maya (blinking): "Uh… okay. And you’re here because...?" Kabir (chuckling): "I just moved in next door. Thought I’d introduce myself the best way I know—through pizza." --- Maya exchanges a confused glance with Arjun, who looks equally suspicious but can’t help smirking. Priya emerges from the backroom, catching the tail end of the conversation. --- Priya (grinning): "Wait, wait. Did someone say pizza?" Kabir (handing over the box): "Yup. Fresh from my friend’s pizzeria down the street." Priya (sniffing the air dramatically): "This smells like friendship already!" Arjun (muttering): "More like suspicious motives, if you ask me." Maya (elbowing him): "Arjun, relax. It’s just pizza. Not a plot to take over the world." Arjun (mock serious): "That’s exactly what someone in a pizza-based conspiracy would say." Kabir (laughing): "Well, you’ll just have to risk it." --- Kabir places the box on the counter and gestures toward the door. --- Kabir: "Anyway, I’ll leave you to it. Just wanted to say hi. Oh, and if you ever need anything, I’m right next door." Maya (softly): "Thanks. That’s… really nice of you." Arjun (under his breath): "Suspiciously nice." --- Kabir gives a friendly nod and exits the shop. As soon as he’s gone, Priya turns to Maya with wide eyes. --- Priya: "Okay, what just happened? Tall, handsome, and he brings *pizza*? Maya, this guy is already outscoring every rom-com hero." Maya (rolling her eyes): "It’s just a neighborly gesture, Priya. Don’t start planning a wedding." Arjun (sarcastic): "Yeah, let’s wait at least two days before picking out invitations." --- Priya opens the pizza box, and the trio is greeted by the mouth-watering aroma of pepperoni and extra cheese. --- Priya (grinning): "Well, whether or not he’s shady, this pizza smells like a dream." Maya (grabbing a slice): "I’ll admit, it’s a good first impression." Arjun (mock offended): "You’re really going to trust a stranger’s pizza over me?" Maya (grinning): "Unless you’ve been hiding pizza skills all this time?" Arjun (dramatic): "Alas, my talents lie elsewhere—like being suspicious of overly nice neighbors." --- They dig into the pizza, the mood lightening as they joke about Kabir’s sudden appearance. --- Priya (mouth full): "So, what do we think? Friendly guy or potential villain?" Maya (shrugging): "Too early to tell. But he seems okay, I guess." Arjun (muttering): "Villain. Definitely a villain." Maya (laughing): "Oh, please. Just because he’s taller than you doesn’t make him evil." Arjun (grinning): "The taller they are, the more suspicious they seem. It’s a rule." Priya (teasing): "Is that why you’re suspicious of Bruno? Because he’s taller than you when he stands on two legs?" --- They burst into laughter as Bruno wags his tail excitedly, clearly enjoying the chaos. --- Arjun (with mock seriousness): "I’m watching you, Bruno. No funny business." Maya (grinning): "You’re ridiculous." --- The rest of the day passes in a blur of customer visits and pet care. But Kabir’s surprise entrance lingers in Maya’s mind, much to her annoyance. As they close the shop, Arjun notices her deep in thought. --- Arjun (teasing): "Thinking about pizza guy, huh?" Maya (rolling her eyes): "No! I was thinking about… Bruno’s bath tomorrow." Arjun (grinning): "Sure, sure. Bruno’s bath. Not tall, mysterious neighbors who show up with free food." Maya (grinning): "You know, if you weren’t so annoying, you’d make a great detective." Arjun (with a playful wink): "It’s a gift." --- They finish locking up the shop and step outside into the cool evening air. The sky is painted with hues of orange and pink as the sun sets over the city. --- Priya (stretching): "What a day. I swear, these pets have more drama than a soap opera." Maya (laughing): "Tell me about it. Muffin almost gave Arjun a heart attack." Arjun (mocking): "I survived. Barely." --- They walk down the street, laughing and chatting. As they pass Kabir’s building, Maya steals a quick glance at his apartment, half-expecting to see him at the window. --- Arjun (noticing): "Caught you." Maya (flustered): "What? I wasn’t looking for him!" Arjun (grinning): "Uh-huh. Sure you weren’t." Priya (teasing): "Don’t worry, Maya. We’ve all fallen for mysterious pizza guys at some point." Maya (groaning): "You two are impossible." --- They reach the street corner, where their paths diverge. --- Priya: "Alright, lovebirds. I’m off. See you tomorrow!" Maya (rolling her eyes): "We are *not* lovebirds." Arjun (grinning): "Speak for yourself. I’m very lovable." --- Priya waves goodbye, leaving Maya and Arjun standing awkwardly at the corner. --- Maya (softly): "So... I guess I’ll see you tomorrow too." Arjun (grinning): "Unless pizza guy steals you away before then." Maya (laughing): "Goodnight, Arjun." Arjun (playfully): "Goodnight, Maya. Sweet dreams of tall neighbors and suspicious pizza." --- Maya shakes her head, a smile tugging at her lips, and heads home. As she walks, she can’t help but wonder about Kabir’s sudden appearance—and why it left her feeling both intrigued and annoyed. --- Meanwhile, back at the pet shop, Bruno watches the door with curious eyes, as if sensing that things are about to get a lot more interesting. --- And across the street, in his dimly lit apartment, Kabir smiles to himself, already planning his next move.
