Whispers of the Past

954 Words
Scene: It’s the next morning, and the pet shop is bustling with energy. Maya arrives early, finding Priya already feeding the animals. The events of the previous evening are still fresh in her mind, and she’s determined to get more answers from Arjun. But first, there’s a mountain of tasks waiting. --- Maya (yawning): "Why do mornings always feel like betrayal? The bed was just starting to love me." Priya (laughing): "Well, the pets here love you too. And unlike your bed, they demand breakfast." Maya (stretching): "Okay, okay. Bruno, don’t give me that look. I’m on it." --- As Maya begins feeding the dogs, her mind drifts back to Arjun’s cryptic behavior. Bruno’s loud bark snaps her out of her thoughts, and she accidentally drops the bowl. --- Maya (grinning sheepishly): "Oops. Well, Bruno, looks like you’re eating off the floor today. You’re welcome." Priya (teasing): "That’s exactly how I knew you’d be a great mother someday." Maya (rolling her eyes): "Oh, please. If I have kids, they’ll probably end up raising me." --- The shop bell jingles, and both girls glance towards the entrance. A regular customer, Mr. Sharma, walks in with his parrot in a cage. --- Mr. Sharma: "Morning, girls! Polu needs his nails trimmed. He’s in a mood again." Maya (mock seriously): "Polu, buddy, what’s the problem this time? Relationship troubles?" Priya (grinning): "Or maybe he just woke up on the wrong perch." --- Polu squawks loudly, and both girls laugh. As Maya begins trimming the bird’s nails, Priya checks the shop’s schedule for the day. --- Priya: "We’ve got a busy one today. Three grooming sessions, two new kittens arriving, and—oh, Arjun texted. He’s dropping by." Maya (trying to sound indifferent): "Oh? Just dropping by, huh?" Priya (grinning): "Someone’s curious." Maya: "I’m not curious. I’m... strategically preparing myself for further interrogation." --- Priya (laughing): "Right. Strategic interrogation with a side of butterflies in your stomach." Maya (playfully): "The only butterflies I have are the ones Bruno swallowed last week." --- Just as they’re finishing up with Polu, the bell jingles again. This time, it’s Arjun, looking as casual and infuriatingly charming as ever. --- Arjun (grinning): "Hey, troublemakers. Miss me?" Priya (teasing): "Not really. But Bruno was planning a protest if you didn’t show up." Maya (crossing her arms): "So, are we getting an explanation today, or do we have to guess which soap opera twist you’re caught in?" --- Arjun (chuckling): "Straight to the point, huh?" Maya: "Always. Now spill." --- Arjun sighs and runs a hand through his hair, clearly debating how much to share. --- Arjun: "It’s... family stuff. My cousin got into some trouble, and I had to step in." Priya (grinning): "Let me guess. Your cousin’s a secret agent, and you had to save the world?" Arjun (laughing): "Not quite. He’s more of a secret disaster." Maya (raising an eyebrow): "And what kind of disaster are we talking about?" --- Arjun: "The kind that involves borrowed money, a broken-down car, and a very angry lender." Maya (mock seriously): "Ah, the classic trifecta of poor decisions." Priya: "Sounds like a Bollywood movie waiting to happen." --- Arjun (smiling): "Trust me, living it wasn’t as entertaining." Maya (softening): "Are things okay now?" Arjun: "Yeah, for now. But I might have to leave town for a bit. Just until things settle down." --- The room falls quiet for a moment. Maya feels a strange tug in her chest, a mix of concern and disappointment she didn’t expect. --- Priya (trying to lighten the mood): "Well, if you leave, who’s going to keep Bruno from staging a rebellion?" Arjun (grinning): "I’ll leave you in charge, Priya. You’ve got leadership potential." Priya (mock proud): "Finally, someone recognizes my greatness." --- Maya (half-smiling): "So, when do you plan on running away?" Arjun (softly): "Tomorrow, maybe. Depends on how things go." --- Maya doesn’t know why, but the thought of him leaving stings more than it should. --- Maya: "Well, I guess we’ll just have to enjoy your company while we can." Priya (grinning): "Yeah. And you can buy us pizza as a farewell gift." --- Arjun (laughing): "Deal. But only if you promise not to cry when I leave." Maya (playfully): "I make no such promises." --- The three of them share a laugh, and for a moment, it feels like everything is back to normal. But Maya knows that tomorrow, things will change. And she’s not sure how she feels about that. --- As they close the shop for the day, Maya finds herself standing next to Arjun, watching Bruno chase his tail in the corner. --- Maya (softly): "You know, it’s going to be weird without you around." Arjun (smiling): "I’ll miss you too, Maya." --- It’s a simple statement, but it carries more weight than Maya expected. She glances at him, searching for something in his expression—something she isn’t ready to admit yet. --- Maya (grinning): "Just don’t forget to send postcards." Arjun (teasing): "Only if you promise not to send me any weird pet shop updates." --- Maya (laughing): "Deal." --- As they lock up the shop, Maya knows that things are far from over. There’s something between her and Arjun—something unspoken, but undeniably there. --- Priya (from behind): "You two done with your emotional goodbyes, or do I need to get tissues?" Maya (grinning): "We’re good. Let’s go get that pizza." --- And with that, the three of them walk down the street, their laughter echoing in the cool evening air. For now, everything feels right. But Maya knows that tomorrow brings new challenges—and maybe, just maybe, the start of something unexpected. --- End of Episode.
