Lee Events's owner, Emily Lee, sat in her tiny office and gazed at her phone. Liam Wright's assistant, Rachel, had just called to invite her to meet with Liam.
Emily felt her heart race faster. She was aware of Liam Wright, the multibillionaire entrepreneur known for his brutality.
She was anxiously fiddling with her napkin as she arrived early at the coffee shop. Tall and commanding, with piercing blue eyes, Liam entered.
"Emily Lee," he remarked in a silky, deep voice. "It's a pleasure to meet you."
Emily's eyes grew wide as she absorbed Liam's commanding presence. His chiseled features and piercing blue eyes, which appeared to stare straight through her, made him even more attractive than she had anticipated.
Emily tried to sound calm as she added, "Nice to meet you too, Mr. Wright," despite the butterflies in her stomach.
Liam grinned, crinkling the corners of his eyes. He said, "Please, call me Liam," in a silky, quiet voice.
Emily nodded as a wave of comfort passed over her. This meeting might not be as horrible as it seems.
Emily couldn't help but notice how Liam seemed to dominate attention as they sat down and ordered their coffee. Emily couldn't help but notice that everyone in the coffee shop appeared to be staring at him. After all, he was among the city's most influential men.
"So, Emily," Liam replied, meeting her gaze. I must admit that I'm impressed. You have a very impressive event planning firm.
Emily grinned, proud of herself. "Thank you, Liam. I've put a lot of effort into growing my company.
Liam nodded while maintaining eye contact with her. "I see that. You're a woman of great talent."
Liam's eyes seemed to stare right into Emily's, and she felt a flutter in her chest. She couldn't help but wonder if he was merely attempting to win her over or if he was always this sweet.
Emily noticed that she was becoming more comfortable as they conversed. Liam was approachable and appeared sincere in his desire to learn more about her.
However, Liam's expression changed to one of seriousness just as things were becoming comfortable.
He said, "Emily, I have to ask you something," in a quiet, urgent voice.
Emily worried about what Liam might ask her, and her heart skipped a beat.
She tried to sound cool as she inquired, "What is it, Liam?"
Her eyes were fixed on Liam's. "I want to propose a business arrangement to you," he replied. "I want you to be my fake fiancée."
Emily's eyes went wide with surprise. This was not what she had anticipated.
"What?" she inquired, unable to comprehend Liam's question.
Liam nodded while maintaining eye contact with her. "Hear me out; I know it seems ridiculous. You seem like the ideal candidate to help me enhance my public image, which I need someone to do."
Emily's thoughts were racing. Before she had a chance to ask any of her numerous questions, Liam's phone rang.
Liam scowled as his gaze shifted to the phone. "I apologize, Emily. I must accept this.
Emily wondered what she had just gotten herself into when Liam answered the phone.
She also became aware that this phony engagement would be more difficult than she had expected when she saw Liam's face darken.
"Who was that?" As Liam hung up, Emily inquired.
Her eyes were fixed on Liam's. "That was Victor Vex," he continued in a threatening, low voice. "He's a business rival of mine, and he's not happy about our little arrangement."
Emily's gaze expanded. She was aware that Victor Vex was a man to be taken seriously after hearing about him.
"What does he want?" Trying to sound calm, Emily asked.
Liam's gaze grew strained. "Emily, he wants to undermine me. And he will do whatever it takes to do it."
Emily wondered what she had just gotten herself into as Liam's comments lingered in the air.
As Emily took in the information, her eyes grew wide. Victor Vex was a merciless business person who would do whatever it took to achieve his goals.
Emily said, "I see," while attempting to seem composed. "And what does this have to do with me?" Her eyes were fixed on Liam's. "Emily, you hold the secret to my scheme.
You can help me enhance my public persona and deflect attention from Victor's attempts at sabotage by acting as my fictitious fiancée." Emily's thoughts were racing.
This was beginning to sound like a lot of drama, and she had never been one for it. Emily answered, "I don't know, Liam," attempting to sound uncertain. "This all sounds very complicated."
Liam's gaze grew strained. "Emily, I realize it's a lot to process. But it will be worthwhile, I promise. In addition to receiving fair compensation for your labor, you will get the chance to collaborate with some of the city's most powerful individuals."
As Emily considered the options, her eyes grew wide. This might be a once-in-a-lifetime chance.
Emily said, "Okay, fine," while attempting to seem composed. "I'll do it."
A broad smile appeared on Liam's face. "Excellent," he replied with a tone of satisfaction in his voice. "I'll have my assistant send over the details."
Emily felt a twinge of fear as Liam got up to go. What was it she had just gotten into?
Emily couldn't get rid of the sensation that she was in over her head as she watched Liam leave the coffee shop.
Emily's phone rang as she was ready to head out. After a moment of hesitation, she responded.
"Hello?" Emily said in a hesitant tone.
The authoritative voice of Liam's assistant remarked, "Emily, it's Rachel." "I have some information for you."
Emily squinted her eyes. "What is it?".
Rachel paused, then said something. "Emily, it's about Liam's past. You ought to be aware of anything."
Emily felt her heart race faster. What could she possibly learn from Rachel?
Emily responded, "Tell me," in a stern voice.
Before she spoke, Rachel inhaled deeply. "A few years back, Liam's fiancée passed away inexplicably. Rumor has it that Liam was also involved.
Emily's eyes went wide with surprise. What?
Emily felt a shiver go down her spine as the realization set in. She had recently consented to be the fictitious fiancée of a potentially murderous man.
Emily wondered if she had just struck a bargain with the devil himself as she hung up the phone.
