Seraphine stumbled back like she'd been hit by a truck, her eyes locked on that Moonbane steel blade sticking right out of her chest.
"No way," she wheezed, her voice all raspy and weak.
"This can't... I'm supposed to be... forever..."
I yanked the blade free with a twist that made my stomach flip.
"Hey, nothing's forever, okay? Everything's got an expiration date. You just hung around way longer than most folks."
She dropped to her knees like her legs gave out all at once, that weird black gunk， her blood, I guess， spilling out around her in a sticky puddle.
It smelled like burnt rubber and regret, turning my nose.
