One day, the Athenians did need Theseus. Greatly outnumbered by the Persians at Marathon in 490 B.C. the Athenian army, aided by a small contingent of Platæans, won a decisive battle. Many claimed to have seen Theseus, in full battle armour, leading the charge. The story of Theseus, as with many ‘heroes’ of any country is shrouded in myth and legend. I like to believe that a ‘Theseus’ did exist; in the same way I believe ‘Arthur’ did. There are many, often contradictory, accounts of Theseus and his exploits. Even the dates of his possible existence can vary by several hundreds of years. From a very young age Theseus has always been one of my favourite heroes of ancient time.
