Just before dawn the following day Theseus left Athens for Thebes. The day was drawing to a close when the smell of decaying flesh, and the circling of vultures, told him he was nearing Thebes. He made a detour to approach Thebes, so he could avoid the stinking heaps that had once been men. Theseus was instantly recognised and taken straight to Kreon, who was sharing his evening meal with his wife and children. Scented rush lights failed to mask completely the miasma of death that hung everywhere. Not knowing that a messenger had been sent to Athens, Kreon was surprised to see Theseus. ‘Theseus, my friend.
