Sacred Bonds

The moonlight rippled across Lucas's skin as he swayed before Empress. The ancient stones of Moonhaven Grove sparked with energy, casting ethereal patterns across his face that highlighted the sharp angles of his cheekbones. "You still haven't explained how you bypassed our wards," Empress said, trying to keep her voice steady despite the strange flutter in her chest. His presence pulled at something deep inside her something primal and urgent. A spark of pain crossed Lucas's face, his amazing green eyes clouding. He opened his mouth to respond, but before he could speak, his legs buckled. The strange energy surrounding him flickered like a candle in wind. Jason shifted back to human form, placing himself protectively between Empress and the stranger. "It could be a trap," he warned, his voice tight with concern and something that sounded remarkably like jealousy. But Empress had already seen the blood seeping through Lucas's shirt. Dark spots spread across his side, and his breathing came in sharp gasps. She rushed forward, catching him before he hit the ground. Up close, his smell was even more intoxicating wild and ancient, like the first wolf who ever ran beneath the moon. "Help me," she ordered, unable to explain the desperate need to protect this stranger. Jason paused only a moment before joining her. Together, they dropped Lucas gently to the grass. His skin burned with fever beneath her fingers, sending unexpected shivers through her body. Strange marks pulsed dimly on his forearms symbols unlike any pack marking she'd ever seen. "We need to get him to the healers," she said, pressing her hand against his wound. Warm blood pulsed between her fingers, each beat of his heart echoing weirdly within her own chest. "He's losing too much blood." Jason's eyes narrowed as he studied her face. "The pack won't welcome an outsider in our territory," he reminded her softly. "Especially not with the full moon ceremony approaching." Empress met his concerned gaze, noting the conflict in his face. "I'm still Alpha. They'll accept my choice." A low growl rumbled through the trees, making both wolves snap to attention. It wasn't the sound of any thing Empress knew it seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere at once, carrying a wrongness that made her skin crawl. "We need to move," Jason said quickly, his protective instincts overwhelming his worries. "Something's out there." The shadows between the trees seemed to deepen, taking forms that made no sense. Empress's wolf stirred beneath her skin, hackles raised at the unnatural presence coming. Lucas's eyes fluttered open, bright with fever but somehow still sharp. His hand gripped Empress's arm with shocking power. "They're coming," he whispered, his voice hoarse. The touch sent a jolt of electricity through her veins. "The darkness... it followed me..." "Who followed you?" Empress demanded, fighting the desire to cradle his face in her hands. "What darkness?" But Lucas's eyes rolled back, and he slipped into sleep. The strange symbols on his arms flared briefly, then faded to barely noticeable lines. Another growl shook the grove, closer this time. The moonlight seemed to dim, as if something was eating it. The old stones hummed with warning. "We need to go. Now." Empress made her choice. "Help me carry him." Together, they lifted Lucas between them. His head lolled against Empress's shoulder, his breath warm against her neck. That unexplained pull tugged at her heart again, stronger now with his body pressed against hers. The Moon Goddess's words echoed: rescue and destruction. They moved quickly through the forest, following hidden paths only pack members knew. The shadows followed them, bringing an unnatural cold that didn't belong in summer. Empress could feel evil eyes watching their every move. A branch snapped behind them, followed by heavy footfalls. Their pursuer was gaining. "We won't make it to the den carrying him like this," Jason panted, his eyes moving to her face. The unspoken question hung between them was this stranger worth risking their lives for? Empress stopped suddenly. "Take him," she ordered. "Get him to the doctors. I'll hold off whatever's following us." "No!" Jason's face hardened with determination and something deeper that made her heart twist. "I won't leave you alone." "I'm your Alpha," Empress reminded him, her voice carrying the weight of command. "This isn't a request." Before he could argue further, she pressed her hand to Lucas's chest. The link between them flared to life, and for one breathtaking moment, she saw flashes of memory that weren't her own a dark figure wielding shadow like a weapon, ancient texts filled with forbidden knowledge, a prophecy written in starlight... The vision stopped abruptly, leaving her gasping. But now she knew with bone-deep certaint Lucas had to live. Her future was inexplicably bound to his. "Get him to safety," she told Jason, meeting the pain in his eyes with resolve. "I'll catch up." Jason's jaw clenched, but he nodded. Years of trust won out over his desire both to protect her and to keep her from this stranger who already commanded so much of her attention. He hoisted Lucas over his shoulder and disappeared into the bushes. Empress turned to face the darkness moving between the trees. Her wolf rose quickly, ready for battle. Power thrummed through her veinsthe strength of her bloodline, the blessing of the Moon Goddess, the power of her position as Alpha. The shadows merged into a vaguely humanoid shape. Red eyes gleamed in a face made of darkness. "Little Alpha," a voice hissed, cold as midwinter frost. "Step aside. The heir is mine." Empress let the shift take her. Her massive black form stood proudly between the shadow creature and the way Jason had taken. Power radiated from her like moonlight. "You want him?" she growled, surprised by her fierce need to protect a guy she'd just met. "Come through me first." The shadow being laughed a sound like breaking glass. "Brave words. But you have no idea what forces you're challenging, child." It raised its arms, and darkness poured from its fingers like water. The temperature dropped as frost crackled across leaves. Before either could move, a howl split the night a sound of pure pain that made her blood freeze. Jason. The dark creature's laugh grew louder. "It seems my workers have found your friends. What will you do now, little Alpha? Fight me? Or save them?" Empress's heart beat against her ribs. Logic said to stay and fight to protect her area from this threat. But the thought of Jason and Lucas in danger... Another howl pierced the darkness, more desperate than the first. Empress made her choice. With a snarl of defiance, she spun and ran toward Jason's cries. The shadow creature's mocking laughing followed her through the trees. "Run, little Alpha," it called after her. "But you can't protect them forever. The heir will be mine, and your pack will burn." Empress ran faster, her paws barely hitting ground. She burst into a small opening and skidded to a halt, her heart stopping at the sight before her. Jason lay motionless, dark tentacles wrapping around his body. Lucas knelt beside him, one hand pressed to Jason's chest, the other raised toward a circle of shadow creatures circling them. The symbols on his arms burned with blue fire, keeping the darkness at bay but his strength was clearly fading. His green eyes met hers across the clearing, filled with power and despair. Something passed between them a link deeper than words, stronger than reason. "I can't hold them much longer," he gasped, his words reaching into her soul. The shadow creatures turned their burning red eyes toward her. In that moment, Empress faced a decision that would change everything retreat to safety, or risk everything for her Beta and this mysterious stranger who already occupied so much space in her heart. But it wasn't really a choice at all. With a roar that shook the trees, the Alpha of the Moonwhisper Pack launched herself into battle, praying to the Moon Goddess that her strength would be enough. As she leapt, one thought burned in her mind: she would protect them both or die trying though why Lucas already meant so much to her remained a secret as deep as the shadows themselves.
