I made sure to travel into the grey zone between the packs. It was safer because only rogues came through here. Usually, no one who lives in packs has their business here. Grey zone is no rule territory. You could attack a wolf from behind, kill someone in their sleep, and r**e a shewolf, and there would be no consequences. And because of that, rouges were usually hungry, angry, and in complete panic mode. No one was protecting them. Even if they traveled together, they did not trust each other because they were rogues.
I chose this dangerous zone because I know I could take down two or three rouges at once, but if a healthy pack member stood against me and they usually were pack soldiers, I didn't stand a chance, even if the wolf was low in rank, I would lose my life. I am so weak, haven't eaten in days now, and slept more than 2 hours each night since I was on the run, and it has been four months now. -Who has become the rogue one now?- I thought with disgust.
Normally, my wolf and I could stand for ourselves. I have trained in combat arts and survival since I was nine, but our luck changed. I could not remember how I fell asleep. The plan was to hunt for some rabbits because I knew many of them in this territory. But we were so tired, havingn't slept for so long, and the proof of last night's heavy rain was still on my clothes. The black hoodie and light blue jeans that I stole from some humans' backyard were two sizes too big and still soaking wet.
That day was so warm, and I could feel the sun through the tall trees. There weren't many sunny days in this region. I just sat in the fluffy green moss, stretched out my bare feet, put my head against the tree, and closed my eyes. -For a minute- I said to Leia and myself. My wolf was tired too.
Two days ago, we had to fight a rogue; we won, but at one point, he threw us against the tree, some ribs got broken. My wolf is very young, and because we haven't eaten for so long, Leia could not heal us fast enough. The pain was still there, but it was bearable.
The sleep came so fast.
When I heard them, it was too late. I opened my eyes in panic, the moon was already shining, and I could see just four bright eyes looking at me; I am their prey tonight. They slowly came closer to me and were already in their wolf forms. One is black as coal, and the other three are grey and a little bit smaller in size. Leia usually doesn't back out of the fight, but she knows that we are not ready to take four grown wolves and still walk alive from here.
I stood up slowly, my back was against the tree, and I looked around to find an exit. I noticed a big branch right in front of me, it was high, but if I had somewhere to spring off, I could reach it and then think about it from there. Leia was starting to look for some higher place to spring off, but I had other plans. They were still pretty far from me, and without warning, I started to run as fast as I could.
I ran towards them, they were already in the fighting position, and to their surprise, I just jumped on one of them and sprung off from the black wolf's back. I reached the branch. They are pissed off; I could hear their angry growls.
We didn't have much time, and I just told Leia- Now!- And my bones started to crack and clothes fabric to break. An inhuman sound slipped out of my lips; the change was painful because of the broken ribs. Before my palms became paws, I had to jump. I looked at the ground with four furious wolves under me and jumped. I hit the ground and felt this awful pain in my back. I could smell the blood, and the ringing started in my ears. I turned my black wolf's head in rage at the grey wolf who attacked me and bit so strongly at its head that I bit off its ear. I ran as fastest as I ever had in my life.
I turned my head and saw the grey wolf in his blood whining. - One down, three to. - I couldn't finish my thought because I felt someone on my right side and suddenly I was pushed to the nearest tree with the power that I lost my breath for a moment. The rips were cracking again. I got to my feet as fast as I could, but my vision was so blurry -Let me take control.- Leia said. She was very young and hadn't fought in control in wolf's form; she is still so inexperienced and wild she could quickly lose control to the point we could lose my human side. But we had no choice. She is stronger in wolf form than me. -Okay, here we go- I said with a shaky voice, and she took control of my body. My mind is slowly sent to the back, and I could see everything and feel the body with all the injuries but couldn't control it.
She was so much faster than me, but I could still hear the black wolf near. And at that point, we knew that we could not outrun him. We were fast but injured. We have to fight him, and we both knew it. -Leia, you can give me back control now. I will fight him myself. - I said.
-No!- Leia shouted - I can do it; you have to trust me!- Before I could answer that I do trust her, she changed direction, and after some time, the greenwood changed to some rocky knolls. I could hear the river nearby. It was so loud and sounded wild. Leia stopped for a moment and smelled the air; we could smell him; the black wolf was near.
She started to run towards the river sounds. I could feel that she was in pain, but she tried to hide it. I could feel something else, an excitement, be free and do what she does the best- hunt. We got nearer to the cliff. The sound of the river was booming. Leia went to the cliff's edge, we saw the wild mountain river running, but the fall was long.
-His is here,- She said and, with a racing heart, we turned around and faced him. He was a little bigger than us, but that didn't scare us. We have been through a lot worse than this. We both started to circulate each other; the cliff's edge made it more extreme. Suddenly, the rogue jumped and bit into our right leg. The pain was sudden and sharp; Leia cried out loud. While the black wolf continued to cycle around us, we tried to stand on the bitten leg, but the pain was too much, the leg was left in the air.
The moment when the black wolf tried to attack again, I just screamed- Attack!!!- Leia jumped and bit his neck. He tried to shake us off him, but Leia felt the blood and went wild. She bit even deeper. I could feel the taste of his metallic blood and that he was getting weaker.
At one point, we could win this, but then he stopped, howled, and ran straight to the edge of the cliff.
-Let go, Leia! - I screamed, -Let go!- But it was too late. She wanted to kill him and didn't hear me. While we were falling, she let him go, and I took control back. Then I felt cold. The hit with the ice-cold water took my breath away. I tried to swim above the water with all the strength I got, but the running river tried to take me under again. The fur helps keep the body warm. I tried not to fight the stream, but I smashed against a big rock with my wounded back. I roared in pain while my wound was torn apart.
My vision got blurry, but I saw a rock near the reachable coast. If I could get to the rock, I could get out, so I swam with all the energy I had left. The moment my paws felt the ground, I collapsed.
I heard them howling. The pain was the only thing that I felt. Naked in my human form, I tried to stand up. With my blurry vision, I saw the cliff where the black rogue and I fell off. Now the three grey wolves were standing on that edge.
-We had to get out of here.- I said, Leia wasn't talking, but I could feel her. -Leia, can you help? - I said while trying to stand up. - I can't breathe.- I tried to breathe in small doses of air, but it hurt like hell every time. -I cant.- Leia said weakly. Her voice was so far away -I can't do anything.- she sounded full of regrets. -Leia, try, please, we have to get out of here. This place was so open, and they saw us.- I said while I was reeling in the woods.
-.I will try Maia, I will.-
I couldn't hear or feel her anymore, but I felt that pain in my leg was more bearable, and I could breathe better. -One problem at the time- I thought. -I would get her back- I said to myself- She needed to rest too.-
It was freezing. I could feel the cold ground under my feet, the breezy wind on my skin; I could only hear the ringing in my ears and the metallic taste of blood. I could only smell the blood, my blood; it was everywhere. I needed to find shelter before someone else would smell it too.
I walked so far that I couldn't see or hear the river anymore. And through the trees, I saw the most beautiful sight I have ever seen. The moon shone over a beautiful lake. It reminded me of my favorite hiding place in my pack. A sharp pain came through my heart, and my eyes filled with tears. I missed my home, the loved ones, but now I have no home and no one that I love.
As I reached the lake, I collapsed on the grass. I was looking at the moon. It wasn't a full moon yet, but it was so bright that it could be daytime.
The last thought in my mind was about the lake in my pack. In front of my eyes, I could see how the moon shone over my old pack. The peace and love that I felt there. The tears ran down my cheeks, and then I closed my eyes. - I am so sorry, Leia, I am giving up.- I whispered to no one.
I heard a man's voice. He told me to wake up, but my eyelids were so heavy I couldn't. He shook me, and I felt the pain in my back again; I tried to scream for him to stop, but I couldn't. I forced myself to open my eyes and saw the most beautiful green eyes. Our eyes locked, and I saw the surprise in his face. I just grabbed his shirt with the straight I had left and said - Please.- The last thing that I felt was sparkles and the warmth from his body while he lifted me and pressed against him.
