THE TRUTH

Aiyanna POV:

Over the past few weeks, Hailey had filled me in on everything that had to do with wolves and vampires, and I was slowly getting used to the idea of their existence. I hadn’t talked much with Rhett, I usually tried to avoid him, which were easy enough, as he were constantly out patrolling the boarders. Raphaels vampires attacked every night, and a couple of nights ago it almost had a deadly outcome for one of the wolves. It was in the very last minute Rhett saved his life, and he has been on constant patrols ever since. Rhett had been trying to talk with me for some time, but after I kept avoiding him, he just stopped trying. I couldn’t really handle a romantic relationship with a wolf at the moment, that would just be to much.

I was headed over to Ivys cottage, she had been helping me a lot these days. We were trying to figure out, why I was so important to Raphael.

‘’I think we have to dig into your family history’’ Ivy had her head buried in a book, named, vampire rituals. ‘’what can you tell me about your parents and grandparent?’’

I sat down beside her, and placed my hands on the table

‘’Not that much, my dad is a firefighter, born in Skåne in Sweden and my mom is a nurse, born in Copenhagen, Denmark, but she moved to Skåne when she met my dad. I don’t know anything about my grandparents’’

Ivy looked up from her book and had a thoughtful expression on her face.

‘’We might have to pay your parents a visit then’’.

I got a knot in my stomach at the thought of seeing them again, I hadn’t seen my parents since the day I got kidn*pped, 1,5 month ago. They had probably sent out a search party to look for me, but by now they most likely think I'm dead. As if she could read my thoughts Ivy smiled and reassured me that we would figure something out.

We ran the idea through Rhett and decided that Hailey and I would drive to Skåne the following week and figure out what my parents knew. The days went by quickly, and I used most of them trying to figure out what to tell my parents when we got there. I couldn’t really tell them that I was kidn*pped by vampires, saved by wolves and now the oldest vampire in history were coming after me. No, I had to find a fitting lie. It became Wednesday, the day before Hailey and I were off to Skåne, and I was on my way to Ivys cottage, to go through the plan, before we left. when I ran into Rhett.

‘’There is a last-minute change of plans, you and I are going to Skåne today, so go pack your bags and meet me at the car in half an hour’’

He seemed stressed, and in a hurry to get out of here. But that was just too bad, no chance in hell I was going on a car ride with him. Instead of packing my bags, I went to the meadow to clear my thoughts. It was by far my favorite place here, it was nice and quiet, and if you listed closely, you could her the birds singing in the distance. I don’t know how long I had lied there, an hour maybe two, when Hailey came running towards me, she was short of breath, and in a panic.

‘’Aiyanna, I’ve been looking for you everywhere, you have to go, you can’t be here. Rhett is waiting for you in the car. RUN, just go’’.

She had me all confused,  but I didn't get the time to ask questions, she just pushed me towards the road back, what was this all about. I did what she said though and ran until I reached Rhett’s car. He was furious, and if looks could kill, I would’ve been dead. He pressed the accelerator so hard, I got pushed back into the car seat. I thought he did it to annoy me, but he kept pressing the accelerator until he reached the cars maximum speed. He drove like that until we reached the main road. I could feel the car losing its grip on the dirt road multiple times, but Rhett managed to keep it steady. My heart were pumping, and for a second I was worried for my life. 

‘’Remember that only one of us can heal themselves’’

I held onto the car door, so tight that my knuckles turned white. Rhett looked at me and started to slow down.

‘’ What is this all about’’ The adrenalin was still pumping, and I was angry.

‘’Caspian, Alpha of the Silverblood pack, the largest and most powerful pack in the world, was on his way. Had he found you amongst my pack, not only had he killed you, but he would also had killed the entire pack. We broke the most sacred rules of them all, we shared our secret with a human. For that, the penalty is dead’’

Hailey had told me a bit about the Silverblood pack, and how they hungered for more power, even though no one dared to stand against them. I remember her saying, that they liked to seek out vampires, and kill them during the day, where they were weakest. 

‘’Shouldn’t you be there, greeting them as Alpha of the Wildfangs?’’

Rhett looked at me and seemed worried.

‘’Caspian weren’t coming for me. He wants Hailey to mate with his beta Micha, and make her a part of his pack. I know Hailey wont agree to it, but Caspian is not a wolf to mess around with. she has to be careful’’

Rhett filled me in on everything he knew about Caspian and his pack. They’d tried for year to make Rhett join them, and become Caspians second beta, but he refused every time. Their ways of running things, weren’t Rhett’s style. So now they aimed for his sister instead. This was simply great, we had a vampire king chasing me, and the most powerful wolf pack chasing Hailey. Just the thought of it, gave me a headache. We drove mostly in silence, mainly because every time we tried to talk about things that weren’t Hailey or Raphael, it got awkward. We hadn’t talked about our almost kiss in the forest. I think we both knew that, if we went there, we had to talk about our feelings and that deep desire we had for one another, and we just didn’t have the energy to deal with it now, so we just tucked our feelings away instead. 

We had been driving for hours, when Rhett pulled into a driveway, I knew all to well. I took a minute to just sit there and look at my childhood home. It was a two-story residence, build in stones, which required a lit fireplace during the winter. There were two big jars with pink peonies, standing on each side of the door, and the windows where arched and white. I noticed there weren’t any lights on, which I found odd. It was 7pm so they both should be home. I looked at Rhett, and it seemed like he had noticed it too, he had a look on his face, which indicated he was on guard. We went up and knocked at the door… no answer. We knocked a second time… still no answer. I went over to the peony on the left, found the spare key on its usual place and locked us inside. Everything was a mess, lamps were knocked down, chairs were broken, and it looked like, someone had been searching for something. What had happened, had my parents been here when whoever did this, broke in, I got worried, and I think Rhett saw that.

‘’They might not have been here when this happened’’ He tried to comfort me, but it seemed fake, and like he was lying.

‘’ What is it Rhett, I know your aren't telling me everything? ‘’

Rhett looked down and took a deep breath before he looked up and directly into my eyes.

‘’your parents aren’t alive anymore’’

I heard him say the words but, it was like my mind wouldn’t accept it.

‘’You don’t know that; how can you know that’’ I yelled at him.

I could feel the tears pressing in the back of my eyes. But I refused to believe it. I looked over at the stairs leading up to the second floor and ran towards it, but Rhett stopped me.

‘’ I can smell it. I won’t let you go up there’’

I tried to go past him, the tears were running like waterfalls down my cheeks, but I had nothing on a big werewolf alpha, he didn’t move an inch, no matter how hard I tried.

My vision was blurred due to the constant flow of tears and I just collapsed on the floor, screaming, there were nothing I could do, I was powerless. I felt two strong arms lift me off the floor, and carry me out of the house, and then I just passed out.

I don’t know how long I were out, but when I woke up, we were on the road again.

‘’Did you call the police?’’ I looked up at Rhett.

‘’No, I couldn’t do that. It was a vampire attack, and they didn’t bother hiding it. If any policemen start to investigate, they are as good as dead to. So, I buried them.’’

He looked down, clearly nervous about my reaction.

‘’ You made the right call’’ I heard myself say, as much as I hated it, it was the right call. No one deserved the same fate as my parents. I wish I could just talk with my mom, hear her tell me that everything would be okay. I longed for her to give me one of her long warm hugs, the kind that could just make you feel untouchable. A tear escaped my eye, and I whipped it away with my palm.

‘’Your mom held a piece of paper in her hand when I found her, you should read it’’

Rhett handed me a paper, which looked like my birth certificate, only under parents, it said unknown. What was this, my parents weren’t unknown, and then it hit me.

‘’I  was adopted?’’
