The Fire Guardian

The golden pillar pierced the heavens. It burned brighter than the rising sun. Even from the Moon Temple, Lyra could feel its overwhelming heat. It wasn't ordinary fire. It was alive. --- Fenrir gazed toward the distant volcano. His silver eyes darkened. "The Second Guardian..." "...has awakened." --- Cassian tightened his grip on the Sword of the First Alpha. "Who is he?" --- Fenrir answered without looking away. "Ignis." "The Guardian of Eternal Flame." --- "He has guarded the Second Sacred Relic for over a thousand years." --- Lyra frowned. "If he's a Guardian..." "Why is he under attack?" --- Orion slowly stepped forward. "Because the Shadow King no longer wants to destroy the Guardians." --- "He wants to corrupt them." --- Silence settled over the courtyard. --- Lyra looked at him. "What happens if he succeeds?" --- Fenrir's voice became heavy. "A corrupted Guardian keeps all of his power..." --- "...but loses his soul." --- "The strongest protectors of this world..." --- "...become its greatest enemies." --- A cold wind swept across the temple. For the first time since becoming Queen... Lyra truly understood what was at stake. --- Fenrir spread his enormous wings. "We leave immediately." --- Before anyone could move— A deep horn echoed across the mountain. Once. Twice. Three times. --- Every Guardian looked toward the western walls. A scout sprinted into the courtyard. "My Queen!" He dropped to one knee. --- "The Shadow Army is advancing again." --- "They've changed formation." --- Cassian frowned. "What formation?" --- The scout swallowed nervously. --- "They aren't attacking the temple anymore." --- "They're following us." --- Silence. --- Orion immediately understood. "They don't want the Moon Temple." --- "They want the Sacred Relics." --- Fenrir nodded grimly. "They're letting us lead them to every Guardian." --- Lyra's eyes widened. "So wherever I go..." --- "...the Shadow Army follows." --- Fenrir met her gaze. "Exactly." --- For a brief moment... The burden of the crown felt heavier than ever. Every decision she made... Would endanger countless lives. --- She closed her eyes. Remembering the frightened soldier. Remembering her mother's words. Remembering the promise she had silently made. When she opened them again... The uncertainty was gone. --- "We're still going." --- Cassian looked at her. "My Queen?" --- "If Ignis falls..." --- "The Shadow King gains another Guardian." --- "If we stay here..." --- "We lose anyway." --- Fenrir smiled proudly. "The Queen has made her first strategic decision." --- Suddenly... The Sword of the First Alpha began glowing. Not silver. Gold. --- Cassian stared at it in disbelief. "It has never done this before." --- The blade pointed toward the burning pillar. As if guiding them. As if recognizing something waiting ahead. --- Far away... Inside the heart of the volcano... A giant warrior wrapped in blazing armor knelt before an altar of living fire. His flaming spear was planted in the molten ground. Chains of black energy slowly wrapped around his body. He gritted his teeth. Fighting them. Resisting them. --- Then... A cold voice echoed through the chamber. --- "You've resisted for one thousand years." --- "But even Guardians..." --- "...eventually break." --- The flames around Ignis flickered. For the first time... His golden eyes flashed crimson. And somewhere deep within the volcano... Something ancient... Began to awaken. The flames around Ignis roared higher. Black chains tightened around his arms. His knees sank deeper into the molten rock. Still... He refused to bow. --- "I..." His voice trembled. "...will never..." "...serve you." --- The cold laughter returned. It echoed throughout the volcano. "You misunderstand, Guardian." "I don't need your loyalty." --- "I only need your despair." --- The black chains suddenly pulsed. Dark energy surged into Ignis's body. His armor cracked. Golden flames collided violently with crimson darkness. The entire volcano shook. --- Miles away... Lyra suddenly stopped walking. She clutched her chest. Cassian immediately noticed. "My Queen?" --- She looked toward the burning mountain. "I can hear him." --- "Hear who?" --- "The Guardian." --- "He's in pain." --- Fenrir nodded slowly. "The bond between the Queen and the Guardians has awakened." --- "The closer you come to them..." --- "...the stronger it becomes." --- Lyra took a deep breath. "Then we don't have time." --- The group increased their pace. They crossed frozen rivers. Ancient forests. Broken cliffs. The golden pillar grew brighter with every passing hour. --- As sunset approached... The air became unbearably hot. Ash drifted through the sky like black snow. The trees around them were burned to charcoal. Even the rivers steamed. --- Cassian looked toward the horizon. "We're close." --- Suddenly— An explosion erupted from the mountainside. BOOOOOOM! A river of lava burst from the volcano. The ground beneath their feet cracked apart. --- "Watch out!" Cassian grabbed Lyra just as molten rock crashed where she had been standing. Fenrir spread his wings, shielding everyone from the blast. --- When the smoke cleared... They weren't alone. Hundreds of warriors in black armor surrounded the mountain pass. Each carried weapons forged from dark crystal. Each wore the emblem of the Shadow King. --- Their commander slowly stepped forward. Unlike the others... He carried no shield. Only a massive black axe resting across his shoulder. A cruel smile spread across his scarred face. --- "So..." "The Moon Queen finally arrived." --- Cassian immediately stepped in front of Lyra. "Who are you?" --- The giant warrior laughed. His voice echoed across the valley. "I am Ragnar." --- "Second General of the Shadow King." --- "My orders are simple." --- He pointed the axe directly at Lyra. --- "Kill everyone..." --- "...except the Queen." --- The Shadow Army charged. The mountain shook beneath thousands of marching feet. --- Fenrir's wings burst into brilliant silver light. Cassian raised the Sword of the First Alpha. Lyra tightened her grip on the Moon Queen's blade. --- For the first time... She wasn't running. She wasn't hiding. She stood beside those willing to fight for her. --- Then... A desperate scream echoed from deep inside the volcano. It wasn't human. It wasn't beast. It was Ignis. --- His voice was filled with agony. --- "Run..." --- "...before I lose myself!" --- The scream ended with an earth-shattering roar. A pillar of black fire erupted from the volcano. The mountain split open. Something enormous... Was climbing out.
