The roar of the bikes filled the air as Damien and Jace pulled into the compound. Damien didn’t even wait for his bike to stop properly before jumping off. He tossed his helmet aside and ran straight into the house. “Gwen!” he shouted, his voice echoing through the hallway. No reply. “Gwen!” he called again, louder, his heartbeat quickening. Jace followed behind, searching every corner. Then, a faint sound, like a whimper, came from the kitchen. Damien dashed toward it, boots pounding hard on the floor. He stopped when he reached the doorway. His eyes widened. Gwen stood frozen by the counter, holding a broken mug. Her hands shook so badly that the pieces rattled. Tears sat in her eyes.
