“I—I’m sorry,” Rose stammered, her voice barely heard. Her cheeks flushed with embarrassment as she stood frozen in front of Lucas. “I overstepped my boundaries. I’m so sorry,” she added quickly, lowering her head, afraid to meet his gaze. Lucas said nothing at first. The room was so quiet that Rose could hear her own heartbeat pounding in her ears. Then, clearing his throat, he finally spoke. “Do you want to go home now?” he asked, his voice calm, too calm. Rose lifted her eyes, confusion flashing across her face. “Am I fired?” she asked hesitantly. “Um, no. You’re not fired,” Lucas replied, rubbing the back of his neck as though he wasn’t sure what to say next. “Since you’re done with today’s work, you should go home.
