“Jacob, my man, have you seen the latest numbers?” I asked, leaning back in my chair.
“Yeah, boss, they're looking great,” Jacob replied, smiling. “The company is growing faster than ever.”
“I know, it's wonderful,” I said, feeling proud of what we had accomplished. “But we can't get complacent. We need to keep pushing forward, finding new ways to innovate and stay ahead of the competition.”
“Absolutely, boss,” Jacob agreed. “I've been thinking, we should start exploring new markets, see if we can expand our reach even further.”
“That's a great idea, Jacob,” I said, nodding. “But we need to make sure we're not spreading ourselves too thin.”
“We have to focus on quality, not just quantity,” I continued. “I don't want us to sacrifice our standards just to make a quick buck. We have to stay focused on our long-term goals.”
“Agreed, boss,” Jacob said, nodding in agreement. “I've been thinking, we should also start looking into new technologies, see if there's anything out there that can help us streamline our processes and stay ahead of the curve. Furthermore, you know how competitive our rivals our, we have to make sure we surpass them in all areas.”
“That's a great idea, Jacob,” I said, impressed by his forward-thinking. “I want you to start researching and see what you can find. Let's stay ahead of the game and make sure we're always innovating.”
Just then, Jacob's expression changed, and he leaned in, a sly grin spreading across his face. “Hey, boss, have you seen that new girl in accounting? She's a real looker, if you know what I mean.”
I raised an eyebrow, cautioning him. “Jacob, let's keep the conversation professional, shall we? We're here to work, not to admire the employees.”
Jacob chuckled. “Ah, come on, boss, you don't always have to be so serious. You are the boss, and you could get any girl to bed you easily, rather you claim to be professional.”
“You are right, I'm the boss, and if I choose not to use my influence, and wealth to woo women, it's none of your business,” I said firmly. “Let's focus on the business, not the employees' personal lives. Furthermore, just because we are friends doesn't mean you should talk to me however you like.”
Jacob shrugged, but I could tell he was still thinking about it. I made a mental note to keep an eye on him, make sure he wasn't crossing any boundaries. I've always known Jacob to be promiscuous, but I thought it was a habit he would drop. However, it only grew worse.
“Anyway, enough about that,” I said, moving on. “I've been thinking about our next move, and I have a plan.”
“What is it, boss?” Jacob asked, curiosity etched on his face.
“I've been looking into buying up some houses in the neighborhood,” I said, an excitement building in my chest. “We can demolish them and build our dream business empire.”
Jacob's eyes widened. “That's a bold move, boss. It's a brilliant idea, but it's also very dangerous. With the current state of the company, I don't think we could afford such without going bankrupt… Are you sure it's worth it?”
“I'm positive,” I said, nodding. “We'll be able to create a state-of-the-art facility, something that will really put us on the map. And with the location, we'll be able to attract top talent from all over the city.”
Jacob whistled. “That's a big undertaking, boss. But I like it. When do we start?”
“As soon as possible,” I said, a smile spreading across my face. “I've already started making some calls, getting the ball rolling. We'll make it happen, Jacob. Mark my words.”
“I've already spoken to a few investors, and they're interested in backing us,” I continued. “We just need to finalize the plans and get the necessary permits. I want you to start working on the design and layout, see what we can do to make it a reality.”
Jacob nodded, his eyes shining with excitement. “I'm on it, boss. I'll get the team started right away.”
I leaned back in my chair, feeling a sense of pride and accomplishment. We were on the verge of something big, something that would take our company to the next level.
Just then, my phone rang, and I answered it, listening intently to the voice on the other end. My expression turned serious, and I nodded, making a few quick decisions.
Jacob, it looked quite intrigued with the phone call I just made, and he could hide his curiosity, so he went ahead to ask.
“Who was that boss?”
“Oh… It's just one of the investors, I just got a call from his assistant that he was murdered. However, he left us a little token, so I was asked to come pick it up myself.” I said.
“Doesn't that sound a little, you know… Off. Why come yourself, and why this late?” Jacob said.
“I don't know Jacob, I guess we are about to find out.” I said. “C'mon, you aren't going to let me go alone, are you? Let's get going.” I said, and stood up to leave.
As I walked out of the office, I couldn't shake off the feeling of unease. I had a sense of foreboding, like something was waiting for us just around the corner. I tried to brush it off as mere paranoia, but the feeling lingered.
As we walked, I couldn't help but think about the phone call. Who could have killed the investor? And why was I asked to come at night? I tried to replay the conversation in my head, but it was hazy, like attempting to recall a dream.
As we continued walking, the city lights began to twinkle around us. We were getting close to the meeting point, and my heart was racing with anticipation.
Suddenly, Jacob stopped in his tracks. “Boss, look.”
I followed his gaze, and my heart skipped a beat. There, in the distance, was a figure watching us. Tall, imposing, and shrouded in shadows.
“Who is that?” I whispered, my voice barely audible.
Jacob's eyes narrowed. “I don't know, but I don't like it.”
The figure didn't move, just kept watching us with an unblinking gaze. I felt a shiver run down my spine, and my mind raced with possibilities.
“Let's get out of here,” I said, turning to Jacob. “Now.”
We quickly turned around and headed back to the office, the figure's gaze following us like a cold breeze. I knew then that we were in for a long, dark night.
