The idea that Sheryl Bolton's creation has become the most essential source for my business’s success, infuriated me. But at this moment, I had no choice because the numbers were so low.
Initially, I didn't believe that Sheryl would change her name, let alone call herself Katrina, a name she really despised but who am I to judge? After what went on between us. ‘I don't blame her’. My whole focus is on getting my hands on what she made.
From what I’ve heard, Tristan Saul might get to her before us. He’s been giving everything to keep the Catallat company on solid ground,” Cheryl muttered.
“Heard where?” Gossip mostly, from that horrible coffee shop you go to."
“What’s the latest news at the moment?” I asked Duncan.
“Well, sir, the analysts are saying the company is struggling, but —“I know what the analysts are saying,” I snapped.
“Okay, sir,” he said. “But Katrina Melvis is actually on a vacation. And if we consider the financial pressures surrounding the company, it's actually sitting on ruffling feathers.”
“Then we have no time to lose. Where is she?”I stood immediately, looking at Abigail.
“Make sure you find out exactly where she is. Because Katrina Melvis doesn’t just influence our stock, she is the key factor to our company's survival.”
Abigail shut her door behind her, and her palms were damp as she lifted the phone to make a call.
“Katrina Melvin's office,” a voice known very well to Abigail spoke.
It was Xander, her former colleague and good friend speaking at the other end of the phone.
“Hi Xander, it's Abigail from the Vale group. I was hoping to speak with Mrs. Katrina Melvin.”
“I have an important message for her”.
"Hey Abigail, it's Xander, how are you doing? I hope that monster is not making you go crazy ? I am surprised that you're still his secretary despite his annoying attitude. I thought you would have left by now,” Xander spoke mockingly.
"Well, Xander, sometimes I ask myself this same question, then I remember that no other company pays me as well as the Vale group does. So I suck it in and ignore whatever he throws at me," Abigail hissed.
“I understand, cut to the chase though I know that there is no important message. I mean, those two have been quarrelling for ages". He pressed on.
“Okay. I want to know exactly where she went for her vacation.” Abigail whispered anxiously.
“A villa”. That's all I know. Work or pleasure, couldn't say,” Xander snapped.
“Come on, Xander, we’ve been friends for a long time. Don't let this little beef amongst our bosses stop our friendship, please.
There was a long pause.
Xander sighs. “Okay Abigail, it's because of you. She went to the Maneel Villa. She tends to spend time with her daughter.”
“Thanks so much Xander. I owe you one.” Abigail squeaked quickly.
Abigail lowered the phone slowly. The Maneel Villa.
She felt so relieved, grabbed her bags, and hurried off to meet Elara.
Elara's POV
“You look stressed,” I said to Abigail as she was adjusting herself into her seat. “Aiden Vale is a nightmare,”Abigail bickered. He is too demanding, he’s arrogant, cold and he talks like people are disposable,” Abigail's voice shook. Every day feels like walking into a war zone in that company. Abigail complained bitterly.
“Nothing bad has happened yet right? Just… swallow it. Suck it in and survive. Remember, you said you were crushing on him earlier.” I laughed.
“When I said that, I wasn't thinking straight. I was new at that time, and he was so handsome, but now I have gotten to know him, I doubt that any woman would love him,” Abigail blurted out.
“Okay, Elara, my break time is up, and my boss is breathing down my neck. Can we catch up later,” she muttered.
When she left the café, she suddenly collided with a cyclist and they both crashed into the pavement. She cried out, feeling a harsh pain in her legs as she bled.
We took her to the hospital. “It’s broken,” the doctor said calmly.
Abigail's breathing faintly. “I need to go back.”
I stared at her, “You're insane. You were just in an accident."
“I need him to see this, “Abigail whispered. “ I can't lose my job.”
I felt pity for Abigail, and after she was discharged, I drove her back to the company with her car.
As I waited by the lobby, another worker came in and took her into Aiden's office.
As Aiden watches Abigail enter his office. He looks at her once, then back to his phone.
“Call Pete,” he said. “He’ll replace you.”
“I can't work with you this moment your not useful”
“No sir, I can still do my job. My hands are free and my brain is straight.” Abigail spoke firmly.
“It doesn't matter if your hands or brain are working, you can't move quickly or run errands swiftly. I said angrily.
Abigail shot back immediately, “I have someone else who would work as well as I do, sir. She will act as my legs, while I act as the brain. I promise you, sir, she will do well. She even works faster than I, and she is very meticulous and an efficient coordinator.
Aiden looked at her, then I hesitantly said, “Just don't disappoint me”.
“I won't sir,” Abigail said sharply.
She wheels off, leaving the office quickly.
Elara's POV
Abigail rode her wheelchair towards me with so much excitement.
When I saw Abigail smiling widely as she came out of his office. I asked Abigail for the reason behind her happiness. She told me what went on between her and her boss. After all her explanations, she stated clearly, ‘You're the solution, Elara', smiling widely at me.
I was puzzled by what she said. Abigail grabbed my hands. “Please Elara,” she begged. “ Can you help me out in assisting him? She stared at me with her bulging eyes.”
“At least just until my legs heal completely. My boss needs someone reliable, and I don't want Pete to take my place. I can’t lose this job. And you were literally the only one I could think of.”
I paused for a while reminiscing over what Abigail had told me.
Then I finally said, “Fine. I’ll go.”
I had to agree. I always hated that part of me.
I felt weak whenever people asked for help, and I ended up helping them out, and even though it didn't benefit me, I still do it.
“I’ll drop off the files,” I replied gently. “That’s all.”
I didn’t plan on meeting him because, with everything they say about him, he is indeed a narcissist, and I hate such people.
I filed the documents away without a second glance, not knowing that one of the reports was capable of destroying the company.
