The soft moonlight filtered in through the curtains as Sophia stood in the hallway, her mind racing from Jackson's warning about Zayna. Her heart was still racing, but when she turned back toward Victor, slumped over on the couch, her concern changed. He just looked so vulnerable, a far cry from the cold, detached man who had been shutting her out for weeks. With a soft sigh, Sophia dropped to her knees beside him. His breathing was labored, slow; his chest rose and fell under the blanket she'd thrown over him. The acrid stench of liquor still clung to his skin, but under that lay something more-weariness, of body and mind alike. She laid a hand on his shoulder and whispered softly into his ear, "Victor, let's get you to bed. He stirred, his eyes fluttering open. They were out of focus
