2. Dimitri

553 Words
I watched the woman, Illeona, leave, wondering what the hell had just happened. I prided myself in my ability to be professional but I was definitely not that with her. I spent our entire conversation savoring her smell and wondering what her body would feel like under mine. I had never met that woman before but something about her made me unravel. There was also something else, though. My gut was telling me that Illeona was either very dangerous, or she was in a whole lot of trouble. It didn't make me want to see her again any less. I wanted to see her again the instant she turned and walked away. "Earth to Dimitri," I heard, my partner bringing me back to the car and reality. "Sorry, Nate. What did you say?" I asked, clearing my throat. "I asked if you think it's the same killer." "I guess we'll find out when we get there but probably." He pulled in front of the restaurant and turned off the car. As we get out and walked into the restaurant I knew this was the same killer. Speaking with the witness confirmed it.  "I don't know who she is," the woman wailed through her sobs. "What did she look like? Did she say anything?" I asked. I was trying to be patient and understanding but her loud wailing was getting on my nerves. "I dunno," she answered. "At first I didn't even know she was a girl. She had that beanie and jacket that made her look like a boy. But her eyes though. That was all I could see. Like ice blue. Cold. Then she said something about murdering children. And someone's mother. Hallie's I think she said. Does that help?" I nodded, "thank you. We'll be in touch if we need anything else. This officer will take you home." She turned and left with the officer and I looked around again. There was something with this killer. Something I was missing. I just couldn't figure out what it was. It was starting to make my head hurt though. Nate walked up beside me. "Techs are gonna be here awhile," he said with a faint southern drawl, "You wanna take off? Could use some sleep." "Yeah. I suppose we have some time." We didn't speak as Nate drove me back to my house. I supposed it was just out of mutual exhaustion. When he dropped me off, I got out of the car with a nod and walked up the sidewalk and into the house without looking back. I was happy to be home but it was too quiet. I needed something to distract myself from overthinking. Just then, as if on cue, my phone rang. I didn't recognize the number, but answered it anyway. "Detective Tallow speaking," I said curtly. There was no answer. I tried again. "Hello?" Nothing. "Who is this?" They hung up. Well that was weird. I checked the number again as if I might recognize it the second time. Of course I didn't. I wondered for a second if maybe it had been illeona, but quickly dismissed the thought. Why would she call and not say anything? But for some reason no matter what I did after that I couldn't seem to get her out of my head.
