Sitting here in my chair reading reports, watching security videos and keeping my third eye on New Orleans street cam live feeds is just another day in the office for me. A role I am not too fond of but understand the importance of this part of my job. Yet a part of my brain still returns to last nights duties. The image, smell and feel of the mysterious wolf, the pain in his cry, a familiarity about it sets my own hackles to rise. Even now as the autistic part of my brain refuses to let the dream rest, dreams that have started in the last few weeks, it analyses the simplest of information while the rest of my brain is focusing on the information played before me. New Orleans has always been a fascinating place to live. Ever since Jackson and I moved here we have been busy rebuilding the agency, fighting crime, saving kids and learning more about the reason our parents were murdered here. However Jackson isn't fully aware of everything I have been dealing with. For me to share this with him will only have him commit me or at least send me to Romania for a year on a retreat for self healing I am sure of it. Sure he has been acting strange lately, I think you would too if you found out the love of your life is a b***h from hell, no not a hellhound... in my opinion worse, a Vampire. Even though New Orleans is the base of operations for our business and his new home town. Jackson has been spending too much time in Italy lately and I have been looking for a reason to bring him home. This case I am working on looked to be the perfect excuse but sadly it appears that I am wrong. The paranormal situation in Italy is not as bad as it is here but as the head of the agency he is needed there while a new office is being set up. THAT is what he says anyway. I am convinced 'she who will not be named' has brainwashed him to keep her new pet close, I just can not prove it. While my brilliant brain and eyes capture all the information ready for the report I have to write, the smallest of movements grabs my attention. A small black blob becomes two forming a silhouette of a plump woman, her arms begin to move rather fast then her head snaps up to glare at the camera pointing in her direction. The Pendulum Wolf is the name of a bar I drink in regularly but they also have one of the best webcams for the public to watch the city through. This woman is clearly signalling something to someone, she stands there and clearly mentions my name, "he will find you Rosie, when he does you will not resist his charms for it is written you are the key to the end". How was I able to hear her through the camera?. I have something humans refer to as 'super hearing', it is one of my super powers you could say. Staring at the screen for a little while longer I watch the female retreat into the black blob then disappear. A chill runs down my spine, my nails begin to elongate and my breathing quickens to sharp intakes. All signs that my wolf is ready to protect or attack, not a great idea considering where I am sitting right now. Knowing this change is inevitable my hands grip tightly onto the edge of my desk, my head lowers so no one can see my face if they walk past my open office door. My eyes closed I concentrate on my breathing, long slow breath in through my nose, hold for a few seconds then slowly release the breath through my slightly opened mouth and count to ten while the breath is released. I repeat this a few times until I can feel my heat rate reduce in speed, the pinpricks along my arm disappear and the rush of blood in my ears is no longer blocking out the regular sounds in the office. Once my body is semi normal I am then able to push away from the desk and walk out of the office hoping I am able to make it out of the building without gaining the attention from the other hunters. "Rosie, Hey Rosie wait up I need you.". That didn't last long. "Hi Jeremy what do you need?". He stops in front of me with a flushed look on his face, considering this kid is older than he looks and a man w***e to the core, he still blushes when I ask what he needs. Pervert, but our pervert. "There has been another attack, only this time it's a little girl around seven years old." My eyebrows raise with impatience as he takes a long deep breath to control his emotions, which can only mean this is worse than I am thinking. "She isn't a local Rosie, she won a state writing competition in her home town.", He opens the file in his hand, frowning as he obviously notices something is missing, " I am sorry boss, no one has asked where they are from. Anyway she was here meeting a few of her idols and interviewing them. Her parents took her to Jackson Square they were laying on the grass looking up into the clouds playing a game....." My arms are folded over my body, trying not to show my impatience while he gives me what I would call , irrelevant information. When he notices the tapping sounds he then snaps out of it. "Sorry, it is just so sad, anyway the girl has gone. The NOPD called me asking for help because they found tracks that do not make sense in a human child's abduction. Here take a look." He hands me the folder showing images of the little girl, foot prints, scuff marks, but also what looks to be a note written in a strange language I have never seen before. Thanks to a photographic, Echoic and Olfactory memory I allow my eyes to read through everything in this folder regarding the kidnapping then hand Jeremy back the folder. "So what do you need from me, seems like you are doing a great job with the information you have to hand." The impatience in my voice isn't lost on me, but if I do not get out of here soon, my wolf will break free and my secret will be out. "Your are our best tracker. Would you go to Jackson Square and see if you can find anything that would help point me in a clear direction? NOPD think this is paranormal because of the text, I want to be able to rule our side out." He looks at me like a lost puppy, not usually one for sentimental s**t, I crack. That is thanks to Nuka the Meleki Wolf I was raised with and now living in my back garden ruling the home as if he is the Alpha. "Fine, I was heading out anyway. I will sniff around and see what I can find. I won't be back in the office for a few days so I will text you with the information I find Okay?", Nodding to him letting him know I have finished with the conversation I leave, slamming the building door behind me, muttering my disdain for humans. There was a time I enjoyed the company, even craved, the company of other humans. Then my parents were killed and my life changed for ever. Only when my grandmother died did I discover just HOW different I was from everyone else in the world. Until I moved here. Yet I still believe Jackson and I have not discovered everything we are meant to discover about our past, present and future. Jackson Square is busy as usual, day time in the summer is one of the most beautiful times to sit on the green grass and enjoy this wonderful town I have adopted as my new home. Sadly despite it's attraction, it is just as dangerous as living in the slums of London or on the streets of New York. NOPD maybe able to protect the humans from the normal dangers, but I am here to protect the humans from the things that go bump in the night and day, and enforce the law that the Paranormal Hunters created to deal with each creepy nightmare being that lives in this city and around the world. Being the top huntress and tracker I have been called upon a lot to help with cases so this request isn't unusual for me, Only now my skills have more than doubled since I learned how to shift into a wolf, allowing her to not only come out to play and stretch her legs, but to also help me in tracking this Paranormal asshole who may or may not be responsible for kidnapping and killing little girls. "Sorry girl you can't come out just yet, we are going to walk around the perimeter and see if you can catch a scent. If you do we will come back tonight when we are free to roam together. " Feeling her rub against me in acknowledgement has become a beautiful feeling, I have not felt such an unconditional love and understanding since my mother and father died. This isn't a love that a sibling can give you but it's close. Walking over the flat grass watching the families and lovers enjoy the heat from the sun, the scent of the grass tickles my nose which only encourages my wolf to roll around begging to feel the grass on her fur and paws. It pains me to deny her right now, this town may have the reputation for all things that goes bump in the night, it doesn't mean I have to be the one to prove to the world this is a spooky city and full of creatures. Kicking my boots from my feet, I appease her by walking barefoot across the grass, allowing nature to brush along the soles of my feet. We are both loving the semi freedom when she growls low in warning. Remaining in place and forcing a relaxed posture my eyes scan ahead and around me. I take my cell from my pocket and place it to my ear. "What do you see?" She knows I am talking to her and actually asking her what she has scented, she replies with images and emotions, stating that the spot we are standing on is where the little girl was taken. Lowering myself to crouch down I continue talking as if I am holding a conversation on the phone. Placing my spare hand on a spot of grass before me she dares me to lower my head and inhale the scent that has been left behind, this I do and agree with her by allowing a low dangerous rumble fall from my throat. We know the scent, we know it very well indeed. Standing I place my phone back in the pocket of my jeans and close my eyes. Before I knew about my wolf I was one hell of a tracker. The ability to see, smell and hear beyond the human scents has always been a blessing for me, but now these abilities are even more enhanced. Standing there I allow my lungs to draw in the scent with one long and deep breath. We hold on to the scent we are tasting on our tongue, opening my eyes I am able to see untraceable paw prints and follow them back in towards the French Quarter. This is not a case for the NOPD this is our case. The scent is that of one notorious wolf we have been tracking for a number of years, he fell off our radar a few years ago. Thinking stupidly he was dead we did not bother to continue in the hunt, but now he is back and he has taken not one but at least three children from my city. He will pay and this time I will ensure he not only dies but his entire pack will know to never cross Rosie Chelsea-Black or the Paranormal Hunters again.
