chapter 08 : Have an accident

2173 Words
at half past five in the afternoon, in front of the widow's house where the incident occurred, a group of children, big and small, gathered. The tallest and strongest among them, known as “Big Brother Long”, was called by the other children. “Stand still and listen to me.” With a command, the children stood in an orderly manner. Big Brother Long stood with his hands behind his back, and with absolute authority, he said, “This time, our 'Green Dragon Gang' has a big mission, which is to rid the village of trouble and teach those little monsters who steal things a lesson. No one is allowed to escape, otherwise I'll beat you to death!” Someone asked, “How do we teach them a lesson?” The answer was, “With stones!” The little brothers scattered and picked up sharp little stones. A boy with a pair of protruding ears shouted, “Pick up more stones. We'll smash the little monsters and see if they dare to steal Big Brother Long's fruits again!” “And the strange cat.” Someone remembered the black cat. “It must die too!” Big Brother Long stood in the middle and said without doubt, “Whether it's a person or a cat, anything strange is a disaster!” The stones were quickly gathered, and each of the ten or so children held one in their hands, once again lining up in a single file at the door, completely obedient to Big Brother Long's instructions. He counted out loudly, “three, two, one,” and in an instant, thousands of stones shot up into the air and swooshed through the sky, crashing into the dark room. The children waited anxiously but heard no sound, feeling a bit confused. “Did we miss?” “Is the little monster not there?” The house of the little monster was eerily silent, exuding a chilling ghostly aura. The June sky above was met with a bone-chilling coldness of December. Suddenly, a child exclaimed, “Could it be that Bad Axia is not completely dead?” Creak— the wooden door opened. From within the darkness, a pile of rocks came flying, with a fierce and rapid force, descending upon them with a destructive momentum, grazing their faces and hitting their foreheads. Several children fell to the ground, their palms and foreheads bleeding. In the blink of an eye, the righteous Green Dragon Gang was in disarray, with its top leaders heavily injured. His anger surged within him, and he picked up a stone and rushed to the doorway, throwing wildly without a care. None of them hit the target. He vaguely saw a creature-like shadow moving agilely, evading his attacks. He could also hear a faint sound, as if... the clanking of chains. He realized that the little monster was chained up! With no stones left in his hands, the stones from inside the house were thrown back at him, accompanied by a terrifying cat's shriek. Big Dragon protected his head and stepped back, shouting to his stunned subordinates, “Go find me a stick, one made of iron!” Feng Zhaofeng and the two children ran away in a hurry. The youngest child started crying without warning. With a face covered in snot and tears, he stuttered and shouted that he was scared, scared of the strange cat biting him. 'If you cry again, I'll lock you up! Bite your tongue! ' After scaring him, Da Long muttered to himself, 'Damn little beast, dare to throw stones at me. I won't let you off today! ' Da Long gripped his iron rod and approached Lu Xun's house with a strong demeanor. This was the scene that Ating saw from afar. Without hesitation, she ran over, desperately wanting to get there faster. Finally, she caught up to Da Long and opened her arms to block the house. A girl suddenly appeared on the flat ground. Da Long frowned and asked, 'Who are you? ' 'I'm Ating,' said Feng Zhaofeng, who came over. 'Don't hit her. Lin Xuechun is very fierce, and she has become so beautiful. ' 'What's the use of being beautiful? She's still not as good as Tingting. ' Da Long pushed Feng Zhaofeng aside and menacingly raised his iron rod toward Ating. 'If you don't move, I'll beat you too! ' Ating didn't budge. Facing him with her beautiful features, she suddenly didn't seem so obedient. 'Big Brother Da Long, our rule is not to hit women,' Feng Zhaofeng held onto Tiger and whispered in his ear. 'Don't forget, Dongzi is coming back to the village for summer vacation! ' The so-called Brother Dongzi is Attin's older brother, Song Jingdong. Unlike Attin, who is disliked, Song Jingdong has a good personality and many interesting stories. He is good at farming and is liked by everyone in the village, from the elderly to the young children. In the moment of hesitation, Big Dragon was unwilling, saying, “How do we settle the score with that little brat who hit me? Now that he's gone, how can I still be the leader of the Qinglong Gang?” Even at such a young age, face was very important to him. In the deadlock, Wang Jun hurriedly arrived as if from the sky. “Big Dragon, are you causing trouble in my territory again?” She played with the pebbles in her hands, assuming a aiming posture. “I'll count to three, if you don't leave, don't blame me for being impolite!” When the wind ear met its natural enemy, it jumped anxiously. “Big Dragon, let's go quickly. Can't we seek revenge next time? Don't forget the fight we had with Wang Jun last time...” Wang Jun was wild. She had never seen a girl like this before, one against five was more than enough for her. She didn't care about losing face or feeling embarrassed, she just pounced on them and rolled around in chicken dung and pig manure, pinching their ears and biting their noses. She even kicked the boys' private parts. She knew everything and dared to say anything. The villagers all said that Wang Jun would grow up to be even more unruly than Lin Xuechun. Big Dragon remembered the last time he was beaten, and remembered how his “little brother” had become a laughingstock for the villagers after dinner. He could only grit his teeth and say, “You all wait for me”, as he led his little brothers to retreat in a grand manner. “Boring, men are really boring.” Wang Jun shook her head and spoke like a girl who had been deeply hurt. “Thank you.” Ating asked: “Is that chubby one Dalong?” “You forgot about Dalong? I think you're just a fool.” Wang Jun knocked on her head and raised her eyebrows disdainfully: “The so-called boss of the Qinglong gang is nothing more than a follower behind Song Tingting. It should be called the Tingting gang! Men are all like this, they see a beautiful woman like a dog sees a bone, they're so cheap.” The Tiger Gang, the Qinglong Gang, the Tingting Gang... Ating was once again confused and said thank you again. She wanted to go see if Lu Xun was okay, but the moment she turned around, the wooden door closed heavily, shutting her out. Wang Jun clicked her tongue: “That little monster is really fierce.” Complaining about how tiring the exam was, she went back to her room to sleep. Ating's gaze went through the c***k in the door, to the dusty Eight Immortals table, and the bowl overturned on it. Two ribs rolled to the ground, and one was stuck in the sweet potato. They were all intact, equally rejected with cold aloofness. Ating stood outside the door for a long time, her shadow stretched long by the setting sun, quiet and lonely. After dinner, with her parents' silent consent, she brought another small bowl of food. Lin Xuechun was sweeping the yard, and when she saw Ating carefully placing the porcelain bowl at the door, she couldn't help but pour cold water on her: “Such a wild thing, how can you tame it? He doesn't even recognize his own mother, he would starve to death before he eats a bite of your sweet potato!” These words turned out to be prophetic. Three consecutive days had passed, and no one had brought him any food. However, he refused to eat her offerings. The door remained silent and mysterious, as if separating him from the rest of the world. After the middle school entrance examination, Ating gradually took charge of the family's meals. It was still the same ingredients of vegetables, tofu, and potatoes, accompanied by a small bag of pork strips. The quality wasn't great, probably the leftover scraps from the pork stall that his mother had bought at a low price. But at least it was meat. First, he chopped up two red chili peppers and stir-fried them in hot oil for about fifteen seconds. He continued until the fragrant and crispy spiciness gradually filled the air, and the peppers turned a light brown. Then, he crushed the chili peppers with a knife, chopping them into fine pieces. The teacher had said that this step was called “knife-cut chili peppers” in the industry. He diced the old tofu, blanched it with salted water to remove the fishy smell, and used fatty pork instead of beef. He cut the pork into small strips and then minced it before stir-frying it in the wok. With the two main ingredients prepared, he washed the iron pot once again. Instead of using doubanjiang, he used soy sauce and cooking wine, adding in the prepared chili pepper pieces. The additional ingredients emitted a hot and spicy aroma. He added water, tofu, salt, sugar, and MSG, creating a mixture that resembled a big hotpot. He then added the tofu and minced pork, and finally added water starch. The soup simmered and thickened visibly, forming a shiny, oily layer on top of the white tofu. The tender and hot Ma Po Tofu was freshly cooked, and Ating took a bite. It was perfectly spicy and made his tongue slightly red from the heat. In comparison, the process for making onion potato pancakes was much simpler, and it was a beginner-friendly home-cooked dish that was difficult to mess up. He minced the onions and carrots, mixed them with mashed potatoes, formed them into round patties, and coated them in beaten eggs before frying them for a few seconds. Ating carefully picked up the last potato pancake when suddenly he heard a cat's cry from the next room. It wasn't his imagination; the cat's cry was mournful and prolonged, resembling a baby's cry by sixty percent. Ating hastily wiped his hands, ran to the next room, and saw half of a cat's paw hanging from the door c***k. The cat saw her and cried even louder. “Luxun?” “Meow!” The cat completely took those two words as its name and happily responded. “I was talking about... the bigger Luxun?” “Meow?” Ating tried to gesture a skinny and fierce-looking young man, halfway realizing that she was actually having a conversation with a cat. How silly. She patted her head in frustration and tried to push the door. Behind the door was a table, seemingly blocked by something else, and she couldn't open it for a while. Ating quickly had an idea and ran to the adjacent room. Wang Jun was reclining with his legs crossed, reading a comic book at the entrance. When Ating hurriedly pulled him over, his face was filled with sleepiness. He looked at the cat, who was showing its teeth and claws, then at Ating, who had a worried expression on her face, and asked slowly, “What's wrong?” Ating replied, “It seems like something happened to Luxun!” The cat meowed incessantly. Who is Luxun? And what do those meows mean? Wang Jun rubbed his forehead, not understanding, but pointed at the door and asked, “Do you want me to help you open this?” “Ating: “Hmm hmm!” Cat: “Meow meow meow!” The two girls still couldn't push open the door. Just as Ating was thinking of finding someone else to help, Wang Jun took twenty steps back and forcefully rammed the door open with his arm. Thick dust filled the air, making it difficult for both humans and the cat to breathe. Wang Jun pinched his nose and asked, “Why is there such a sour smell? Oh my god, I can't stand it.” He quickly stepped back. However, Ating continued walking inside and saw Lu Xun in the corner. He was barely breathing.
