She noticed another pair of teenagers in front of the laundromat. One was lying flat on his back with a blood-stained face. The other was on his knees a few feet away, hiding his face in his hands. The officer who had decided to take on the role of her liaison stood behind her. “The kid wouldn't let us approach,” he said. “We tried anyway, and he threw up some energy field.
