MATE
Mia wakes up, yawning and stretching out her sleepy head. As soon as she hears her best friend Clara barge into the room, Mia immediately sits up with a pout.
"Can't you ever be quiet? Leave me alone, I still want to sleep," she complains. Clara rolls her eyes as she walks to Mia's bed, and starts jumping up and down like a monkey.
"You have to wake up, Mia, or have you forgotten what today is? It's your birthday, which means..." Mia gasps and sits upright."That means I get to meet my mate today! I've got to get ready!" Mia immediately jumps out of bed, making Clara giggle.
"Will you calm down? You won't be able to sense your mate until the full moon is out, so what's the rush?" Mia pauses, then slowly turns to Clara with furrowed eyebrows.
"Then why are you here so early in the morning? You could have just allowed me to sleep until it was time." Clara shakes her head.
"No, I can't do that, baby girl. Guess who's back?" Mia frowns.
"Who?"
"My brother and your only handsome crush, Mark Williams." Mia freezes.
"Mark? Do you mean the Mark I had my first kiss with, the one my heart beat for, the one that..."
"i***t. Yes, it is him, so stop bluffing and disturbing me with your thoughts, Laila, Mia's wolf, suddenly interrupts her. Mia rolls her eyes at Laila, then turns to Clara.
"Why is he back? How about his studies, how come he's back?"
"Well, my dad asked him to come back yesterday, but because of the pack protocols, he arrived this morning and is asking about you. And about why he is back, I don't know yet." Mia's heart suddenly begins to race.
"He was... He was looking for me. Why?" She winces as she holds her chest. Clara runs up to her with worry on her face."Are you okay? Maybe you should sit down." Clara tries to grab her hand, but Mia shakes her head.
"Physical touch makes it worse, remember?" Clara sighs as she watches Mia walk towards the bed and take a seat.
"This illness of yours seems to be getting worse every day," Clara comments, which makes Mia sigh. No one knows the cause of her sickness, and no one knows the cure. Mia has had this sickness for as long as she can remember.
She doesn't even know if she can call it a sickness, or if she is just weak. Her human form is very weak, and she could faint at any time. It always starts with a headache and ends up with her fainting. Sometimes it could take days before she wakes up. Whenever she asks her parents the reason for the sickness, they always tell her to be strong, but that isn't the case. She is very strong in her wolf form but becomes weak when she changes to her human form. Her wolf and her human form feel like completely different people.
"I almost forgot about my sickness. Who in their right senses would want someone as weak as me as a mate? I am the alpha daughter, but I'm the weakest being in the entire pack. What an irony," Mia mutters to herself as she swallows in self-pity.
"Don't ever say that, Mia. Your mate would be very lucky to have you and will love you because you are a sweet soul. He will love you despite your flaws and imperfections. You are perfect to me," Clara reassures her. Mia smiled tiredly at Clara before taking a deep breath as she lay down on her bed. She could still feel herself losing consciousness. "Tell Mark I will visit him later. I am not in the right mood to see someone right now," she said.
Clara frowned as her eyes glossed over with pity. "This is all my fault. If I hadn't come here to tell you about Mark's return, then your heart won't have raced and..."Don't worry about me. I'm fine," Mia mumbled tiredly. Her eyes dropped close, and at that moment, she blacked out.
Mia yawned and stretched out as soon as she woke up. She looked outside and gasped when she saw it was already dark outside. That meant she had slept for the whole day, and her parents were probably at home by now. Had they noticed she had fainted?
She immediately got out of bed and went to wash up, then got dressed in her silk satin white gown that had a slit at the side. In her pack, it was a tradition to wear white under the full moon because it would be easier for their mates to find each other.
She placed her hair in a messy bun and then put on some white sandals before she glanced at herself in the mirror. She knew she was gorgeous. Her dark black long hair that flowed down to her waist made her skin and her hazel eyes evident. Surprisingly enough, no one in her family had hazel eyes. Her mother had told her she had inherited them from her grandmother, which she was grateful for. Her hazel eyes were what she loved most about herself.
The gown she was putting on hugged her small yet curvy figure in all the right places. Clara was right. Her mate would be extremely lucky to have her as a mate.
"By the time you're done checking yourself out, the full moon would have gone by then," Mia's wolf, Laila, said in her head. Mia rolled her eyes. "I'm not in the mood for your negativity, Laila," she muttered to her wolf.
Just then, her brother Alex walked into her room. He seemed surprised to see her awake and ready but also seemed relieved. "I'm glad it didn't take days before you woke up this time. Are you feeling better now?" he asked. She nodded at him with a smile. She and Alex looked nothing alike. He took after their father, and she took after their mother.
"I'm feeling much better now. I better get going and hopefully, my mate won't reject me," Mia said to herself as she stood up from her bed. Suddenly, her eyes grew wide as she inhaled the most delicious and addicting scent she had ever smelled in her life.
"Mate," she heard her wolf growl in her head. "My mate is here."
"What happened? Wait, did you just catch your mate's scent?" Her brother Alex asked, but Mia's mind was filled with that scent, and she couldn't think straight. She quickly walked out of the room and followed the scent until she gasped when she saw who it was coming from - Mark.
He seemed very shocked at first, but then a bright smile appeared on his face. "You're my mate. We are mates. This is unbelievable."
"I know there was a reason my wolf was practically begging me to come back, and I knew it had something to do with you," Mia smiled, and her heart swelled with happiness as soon as he said that. They were both so consumed with the emotions they were feeling that they didn't notice the pairs of eyes looking at them.
Before Mia could utter a word, some wolf warriors barged into the house with frantic eyes. "Alpha," Mia's father frowned as soon as he saw them. "I said no disturbances today. What seems to be the problem?"
"The queen of the witches is dead," one of the warriors said. Mia furrowed her eyebrows when she noticed how pale her father and brother's faces had become. What did the dead witch have to do with them?
"And what does that mean?" John stuttered.Alpha Damian is here with his warriors. They came for a fight."
Few minutes before the attack:
"Okay Damien, I swear to the moon goddess. I've walked past this tree ten times today, and if I do it for the eleventh time, I might lose my mind," Luka complained, but Damien wasn't listening to him. His body was tingling; he felt the beast in him rising.
"They cast a spell to be invisible. Damian said, "How dare them!"
"Seriously? Like an invisible spell or what...?"
"A barrier spell. Bunch of idiots! If they were that strong, why are they hiding from me?" Damien stood up straight, placed his hand on one of his ears, then lifted and did the same with the other ear.
"Damian, what are you doing?" Luka asked, raising an eyebrow.
"They are here." Luka looked towards where Damian was pointing, then frowned. All he could see were trees and grasses.
"How do you know that?" Damian rolled his eyes.
"No matter how I explain it, you won't understand," Luka gasped. "Fine. Mind like everyone and tell them to meet us here." Luka nodded.
"What do we do about the spell? We definitely can't break it, can we?" Damian shook his head."There's always a way out; that's what we need to find out. Follow me," Luka sighed and reluctantly followed him behind.
"What do you think the way out is?" Luka asked.
"Will you just shut up? Your voice is irritating to the ear, and I don't have time for your rubbish now," Damian muttered, then rolled his eyes as he turned to a huge tree. He could feel the power emanating from the tree.
"This is done by the Queen of the witches," he murmured to himself.
"You know, sometimes you should be nice. You don't have to be very rude. Besides, we are brothers, so you need to talk to me nicely," Luka grumbled, which made Damian roll his eyes. He walked very close to the tree and placed his palm on it. He sighed as his hands roamed around the tree, looking for where exactly the power was coming from.
"Wait, Damian, why are you feeling up a tree? Are you okay?" Damian turned to him with a glare and was about to rain curses on him when his hand suddenly entered a part of the tree. He looked down, and a smile appeared on his face.
He grabbed the tree and smashed it down to the ground.
"What was that for?" Luka asked with wide open eyes as he walked towards Damian.
"The spell has been broken; I just destroyed it," Damian straightened, and his aura turned into an unbearable cold.
"It's time. Let's go."Present time:
"Alex's eyes turned cold immediately."
"How did she die? What happened to her, and what about her successor? Can't she restore the spell?" The guard sighed.
"She was killed together with the queen. This can't be happening now, no."
"Assemble all the warriors and tell them to stand guard in front of the packed gate now." The guard nodded and ran out. Cole immediately wrapped his hand around his wife, Ama, who was already crying her eyes out.
"He's coming for us. I already know that this will happen. I knew it." Alex sighed.
"Now is not the time to cry. We need to leave before he gets here." Mia furrowed her eyebrows.
"What's going on? Who are we running away from?" She asked, looking worried.
"They weren't allowed to leave the pack, and she wondered why. She knew nothing about the spell."
"Mia now is not the time to ask questions.
"Mia now is not the time to ask questions. Pack your bags, let's leave," Before her father could complete his words, a guard stumbled into the house, and Mia and her mother gasped at the big s***h on his chest."He's here," the guard managed to say before he crashed to the ground, lifeless. Mia let out a scream, and Mark wrapped his arm around her, confused about what was going on.
"We need to leave now," Alex shouted, but Mia's ear was tingling and her heart was racing. She pushed Mark away because his touch was making it worse.
"Not now, Mia. Try to hold yourself for a while, and I will help you as I can, but you also have to help yourself," her wolf mustered in her head. She understood how serious the situation was because her wolf had never been this serious.
"Mark, go to your mother. She might need you," Alex muttered as he grabbed onto Mia's hand. After making sure that Mia was okay, he ran out of the house. Alex immediately carried Mia on his back as they ran out of the house.
"I feel very tired, Alex," Mia murmured.
"Hang in there. You will be fine. We need to leave this place before he finds us," Cole said.
"Who is he? And why is he after us?" Mia asked. Before Alex could reply, she screamed. The air suddenly turned cold and sinister, and Mia shivered.
"No, no, please," she heard Alex whisper, but her attention was on the dark silhouettes walking toward them with the most powerful aura she had ever experienced.
Before she could see his face properly, her father ran to them with a growl. "Leave my family out of this, Damian. I'm the one you want and not them. Please let them go."Mia was surprised; she did not know what was going on. She looked up, but the man's aura was something else. She wanted to see him, but she couldn't because her father was blocking her.
"Stay still, Mia. We must not let him see you," her father warned. Mia furrowed her brow and was about to ask why when she suddenly turned back to the man, and her eyes connected with his dark gray eyes that held no humanity in them. All she could see was his hunger to kill them all."
Alex immediately dropped Mia on the ground and covered her with his body while glaring at Damian. "What the hell do you want?" Damian turned to Alex with a bored expression on his face.
"Watch your tone when you speak to me, young man," Alex was about to say something, but seeing the coldness in Damian's eyes, he kept quiet and subconsciously bowed his head and stared at the ground. "Why was this man's aura so powerful? He knew he was the alpha king, but the kind of power emanating from his body is unlike anything else Alex has felt before."
"Cole muttered, "Please leave my family out of this. We can sort things out without war," which made Damian smirk. "Do you think I want to be this dump? You were the one who forced me here. How dare you tell me that trash. But I must say, using a spell was very intelligent. I never knew you could be this smart." Mia gasped. "How dare this man, no man has ever talked to her father like this before."
"Don't you dare talk to my father like that, who do you think you are?" Mia sucked in her breath as Damian dark eyes turned to her. He looked at her and was about to say something before her father rushed up to him and grabbed his hand. "Let my family go, they are innocent, and my daughter isn't well, please, she needs rest." Damian stared at him with an amused expression on his face."She needs to rest, is that so? Well, I can help with that." Luka grabs the girl. Cole's eyes widened as he shook his head. "No. You can't kill her, don't touch her." Cole yelled as Damian ignored him. "Luka, what are you waiting for?" Damian signed as he went to the frail girl that was being promoted by her assumed brother.
Alex growled at Luka as he got closer while his mother latched on Luka's arm. "Leave my daughter out of this, take me instead, please." Luka sighed, he hated being the one to do Damian's dirty work because Damian always expected him to have no compassion.
"Luka, what are you still waiting for? Kill whoever gets in your way." Damian commanded with a loud authoritative voice. Although they were brothers, alpha tone still worked on Luka. He grabbed Ama by the neck and threw her away like she was mere paper.
"Mother," Mia and Alex yelled while their father immediately ran up to her. "Are you okay, love?" Ama looked up at him. "Please don't let him take our daughter away from us." Cole nodded.
Alex growled at Damian as he suddenly turned red. He lunged at him as he elongated his claws and was about to s***h him across the face when Luka smoothly dodged him. Damian watched from afar with sleepy eyes. He was very tired, and this was just a waste of his precious time.
In a blink of an eye, he appeared before Mia and grabbed her fastly by the hand. She stared at him with wide eyes and then tried to release her hand from his hold, but he was very strong. "Let go of me!" she screamed, but it was like she was talking to a wall. He picked her up from the ground and threw her on his shoulder despite her protest. As soon as Alex saw this, he ran over to Damian to stop him, but with just a look from Damian, he went flying backward until his back hit a tree."Are you going to sign this or not?" Damian questioned as he stared at Cole, who was still on the ground holding his wife. "Let go of me, you monster!" Alex Mia yelled as she wiggled herself on Damian's shoulder, but it didn't seem to bother him.
Cole snarled at Damian as he stood up from the ground. His glowing yellow eyes stared at Damian with intense hatred. "No matter what happens tonight, I will never sign that deal. Even if you kill me, I won't still sign it. You are a beast and need to die," Cole declared. Damian's eyes immediately turned dark. The wind began to pick up, and Luka knew that blood was about to be spilled tonight.
Damian practically threw Mia into Lukα's arm roughly before turning back to Cole. "What did you just say to me?" Damian asked slowly as he took threatening steps toward Cole. But Cole wasn't backing down. Damian had done enough.
"One day, all of us will watch you die a miserable death because that is what you deserve. You are a beast, Damian. You don't deserve to be on earth but in...." Silence fell upon them as Damian drove his hand into Cole's chest and grabbed his heart.
"Do you know who I am? No one on this earth can kill me. I will make sure of that, but even if someone does, I'm sorry; you won't be able to witness it," Damian sneered. With that, he ripped out Cole's heart and watched him fall to the ground with contempt in his eyes.
"Cole!" Ama screamed in pain as she held onto her heart. It all felt so surreal to them, especially Ama. Her mate had just been killed in front of her, and she couldn't do anything to help. She tried to crawl up to him, but the pain she was feeling was overwhelming. She hadn't just lost her mate but her alpha as well.
"Father!" Alex screamed as he ran up to Cole and held him in his arms, while Mia still couldn't believe it. Her father had just been killed like that? Impossible. All the pack members began to cry, having lost their alpha, but Mia stood still. Her head was ringing, and she felt like what she had just witnessed was but a nightmare. She was going to wake up soon, right?
"I want all of them taken back to my pack. No one should be left behind," Damian commanded. As soon as Mia heard Damian's voice, she suddenly snapped out of her daze. She turned to him, and for the first time, both she and her wolf seemed to have immeasurable strength.
She ran up to him and, before he could react, she elongated her claws and plunged her fist into Damian's abdomen. She stared into his gray eyes which seemed to be in shock, having been caught off guard. He had never been caught off guard before, and what was worse was that he was caught off guard by a weak wolf.
"Mark my words, I will make you pay for what happened today," Mia muttered as tears ran down her face. Her whole life had just been destroyed by this man, and she was going to make sure he suffered the consequences. She yanked her hand out of his stomach and was about to s***h his face when she suddenly lost consciousness and fell towards him.
