I found it hard to wrap my mind around the astonishing words that had just escaped Jason's lips. "I beg your pardon, sir, but could you please repeat that?" I asked, my voice tinged with disbelief. A smile crept onto his face, one that held a certain charm, as he replied, "Bring home your fiancé." Confusion washed over me, for I had no fiancé, nor even a boyfriend to speak of. "Sir, I’m not involved with anyone, so how could I possibly do that?" I stammered, the furrows of my brow deepening. His smile widened as he rose from his seat and approached me with a confidence that was both disarming and perplexing. "I’ll be your fiancé," he declared, the audacity of his proposition hanging in the air like a bold challenge. "I can assist you in finding out whether your brother is okay. I have the authority to grant you a leave of absence while still ensuring you receive your pay." The gravity of his offer struck me like lightning. Jason James, the esteemed CEO of James Corporation, was suggesting that he would play the role of my pretend fiancé. "Sir, I fail to comprehend why you would go to such lengths," I questioned, my mind racing to understand his motives. His smile remained unwavering as he replied, "I would be devastated to lose such a valuable member of my team simply to ensure the well-being of her brother." Suddenly, the pieces began to fall into place; it was clear that his desire to keep me at the company was the driving force behind this unexpected arrangement. "Very well, I will agree to this plan," I said cautiously, though uncertainty gnawed at me. "However, I have my reservations about how convincing this will be, particularly since I don’t own a ring. What is your strategy for resolving that issue?"He offered a gentle smile before turning away and making his way back to his desk. “Sandra, could you please schedule an appointment for me at Sky's Jewelry for 2:00 PM today?” he requested, his tone casual yet commanding. Sandra, ever dutiful, replied with a simple, “Yes, sir,” and that concluded the matter. He continued, a hint of mischief in his voice, “I intend to address this situation by purchasing you a ring. Are there any other concerns you'd like to share with me?” His smile, warm yet teasing, began to grate on my nerves. “I still have my doubts,” I replied, my voice tinged with apprehension. “I’m certain they will see through the facade of our relationship. Don’t you think it would be a bit strange to kiss and hold hands in front of them, especially since we’ve never done that before?” Without offering a reply, he pulled me into his embrace and kissed me. The kiss, though brief, stretched out in my mind, feeling as if it lasted for hours. When he finally pulled away, he wore a knowing smile that stirred a mix of irritation and longing within me, a desire to both punch him and kiss him once more. “Consider that problem solved,” he declared, his confidence unwavering. “If there’s nothing else, you can return to your work. I’ll meet you in the parking lot at 1:30.”The day unfolded in a peculiar manner, stretching endlessly while simultaneously racing toward its conclusion. I found myself reluctant to embark on the trip to the jewelry store with Jason. When the clock struck 1:30, a wave of relief washed over me; it was time to depart. Fortunately, I had the luxury of a full hour for lunch, which I could take at my discretion, though it hardly felt significant considering I would be spending it in Jason's company. As I made my way to the parking lot, I spotted Jason leaning against his car. His vehicle was modest, a reflection of practicality rather than extravagance. "Ready, dear?" he asked, offering me that familiar, disarming smile. In response, all I could manage was to return his smile, a silent acknowledgment of the warmth he brought into the moment. The jewelry store lay just a mere fifteen-minute drive from the office, a brief journey that felt almost like a fleeting moment. As we arrived, Jason's voice broke the silence, a casual remark that seemed to carry little weight. "We're here," he stated, his tone indifferent, as he stepped out of the car. With a smooth motion, he approached my door, opened it, and extended his hand toward me, inviting me to join him. A smile graced my lips; it was a gesture that felt warm and thoughtful, a simple act that brightened my day. As we entered the store, the atmosphere shifted. A stunning woman glided toward us, her gaze fixated solely on Jason, seemingly oblivious to my presence. "Hello, sir. How may I assist you today?" she chirped, her voice high-pitched and somewhat grating to my ears. Jason replied with confidence, "I'm here to select an engagement ring with my fiancée." At that moment, the woman’s eyes flickered to me, her expression shifting to one of surprise. I responded with a gentle smile, acknowledging her newfound awareness of my existence. She led us to the display of rings that sparkled under the store lights. "What is the lady's ring size?" she inquired, her voice smooth and inviting. Jason turned to me, a glint of confidence in his eyes, and replied, "She's a size 7." I was taken aback by his knowledge of my ring size; it was a detail I had never shared with him. The woman then presented a selection of rings that would fit me perfectly. Each one was exquisite, but my gaze was irresistibly drawn to a particular piece: a heart-shaped white diamond flanked by two stunning blue stones. It was as if Jason could read my thoughts when he turned to the woman and declared, "We'll take the one with the heart." She retrieved the ring, handing it to Jason without sparing me a glance. "Give me your hand," he said, his tone gentle yet commanding. I extended my hand, and he slipped the ring onto my finger, planting a soft kiss on my hand, ensuring the woman witnessed the gesture. "It's perfect; we'll take it," he added, his voice filled with conviction. Although she smiled, I could sense the insincerity behind it, a façade she wore for the transaction. With a practiced grace, she guided us to the register for checkout. "That'll be $2,345.96," she announced, her tone flat. My heart raced, and I felt my jaw drop at the staggering price, but before I could voice my shock, Jason had already pulled out his card and completed the purchase. Taking my hand in his, he led me out of the store and back to his car, a mixture of exhilaration and disbelief swirling within me as we stepped into the cool air outside. As I sat there, a wave of anxiety washed over me. "What am I going to tell my coworkers when I return to the office?" I pondered, feeling the weight of the situation. Jason, catching my bewildered expression, turned to me with a confident smirk. "You’re not going back to the office today," he declared. "You’re coming with me to my place." The words hung in the air, and disbelief coursed through me. How could it be that I was about to abandon my responsibilities at work for a trip to his home? It felt like a surreal twist in my otherwise predictable day. "But sir—" I began, only to be cut off by his firm yet playful interruption. "It’s Jason. If your parents are going to believe we are a couple, then you can’t call me sir." He had a point; the moment I referred to him with such formality, the entire facade would crumble. Resigning myself to the reality of our predicament, I relented, "Fine, Jason. I need to go back to work. I can’t just abandon my duties and head to your place." He smiled, a knowing glint in his eyes that suggested he was completely in control of the situation. It was as if he was saying, "Don’t worry; I’m the boss, and what I say is final." With a heavy sigh, I sank back into my seat, uncertainty swirling in my mind. I had no idea where he lived or how far it was, but before I could dwell on it any longer, I drifted into a deep slumber. Two hours later, I was jolted awake, feeling the warmth of Jason’s arms as he lifted me effortlessly, cradling me as if I were the most precious thing in the world.
