The Decision

Alexander paced restlessly in the grand hallway of the Moreau estate, his mind spiralling with questions he hadn't dared to ask himself until now. The shadows from the ornate chandeliers stretched long across the floor, like the secrets under the light he had begun to uncover. The past days' events churned within him—Luca, his mysterious world, the undeniable pull toward him, and the dark undercurrent that seemed to threaten Alexander's knowledge of the world. He paused by a window, staring out at the Parisian skyline. The beauty of the city, so familiar and comforting, now felt suffocating. The world he'd always been a part of felt increasingly distant, as if he were standing on the edge of a cliff, one wrong step away from plunging into an abyss. And Luca... Luca was that abyss. The more time Alexander spent researching him, the more it became clear that Luca was not so clear to the man he thought he might be. He had suspected it from the beginning, but now warnings from the information his secretary brought in and the cryptic silences from Luca himself were impossible to ignore. His thoughts were interrupted by a familiar, light-hearted voice. "You look like you're about to break that window with your glare," Sophia said, leaning against the banister of the stairs. Her playful demeanor had always been a contrast to the seriousness in this mansion. He forced a small smile. "I'm fine, Soph," he replied, trying to sound reassuring. Sophia approached him, her eyes narrowing as she studied him. “That's the worst lie you've ever told me, Alex.” He sighed, rubbing his temples. "It's nothing, really." She raised an eyebrow. "You've been acting strange since that guy showed up. What's his name again? Luca?" Her tone was light, but there was a hint of genuine concern beneath it. "Who is he? And don't tell me he's right now 'just a friend.'" Alexander hesitated. He hadn't told anyone about his concerns with Luca, least of all Sophia. He knew how complicated things were becoming, and dragging his sister into it would only put her at risk. But keeping secrets had never been his strong suit, especially with her. "He's… different," Alexander admitted. "I'm not sure how to explain it." Sophia's playful expression softened. "Different how? You've been around a lot of people, Alex. What makes him different?" Alexander turned away from the window, trying to find the words to describe what he couldn't fully understand himself. "I don't know. It's like, when I'm with him, everything else fades. But there's something about him that… I don't know if I should trust. It's complicated." Sophia crossed her arms and leaned against the wall. "It sounds more than complicated. Dad would flip if he knew you were this wrapped up in something like this." She paused, concern flickering in her eyes. "Alex, you better know what you are doing." Alexander knew she was right to be concerned. Philippe had always been strict and introducing someone like Luca into their lives, igniting tension would be the least of all the problems. But it wasn't just about their family's expectations anymore. It was about Luca's side of the game—what he was involved in, what secrets he held behind that cool, stoic exterior. "I'm not sure I can just walk away now," Alexander admitted softly. "It's… complicated. I know he's dangerous, but I can't seem to stay away." Sophia gave him a long, thoughtful look. "Just be careful, okay? You're my big brother, and I'd hate to see you get hurt." --- Later that evening, Alexander found himself sitting in his father's home office, facing Philippe across the expansive wooden desk. Philippe was reviewing documents, but his piercing gaze occasionally lifted to scrutinize his son. The silence between them was making the air tense. "Alex," Philippe began, finally breaking the tension. "We need to talk about your recent... attitude." Alexander knew where this was headed. His father had been increasingly vocal about his concerns, though he'd never directly mentioned the reason. Still, Philippe's disapproval was impossible to miss. "I'm still handling everything with the company, the meeting went well, and we got our deal," Alexander responded, knowing full well that wasn't the issue at hand. Philippe set his papers down, folding his hands together. "I'm not talking about your business responsibilities, though I've noticed your focus drifting. I'm talking about this... individual you've been sending Kyn to investigate. You didn't think that my right-hand man wouldn't tell me about it, right? First his contact number and now you want to know his family? The Santoro family?" Alexander's pulse quickened. "Luca is... complicated, but it's not what you think." "Isn't it?" Philippe's tone was sharp, but his eyes betrayed his concern. "I didn't raise you to get involved with people who could drag this family into the landfill. You have responsibilities, not just to the company but to your family's reputation. This... man—he's not part of our world, never will be, and you need to realize what it could cost you." Alexander gripped the arms of his chair, his frustration rising. "Cost me? Or our family..." Philippe's eyes darkened and waited for Alexander's emotions to calm a little before finally speaking softly. "Alexander, I've dealt with the Santoros before, I know they are not people who do business the way we do. They build themselves on bones and violence, and we are just not a part of that. We build on hard work and knowledge, sure maybe sometimes things go a little rough, but we, our family, never hurt anyone intentionally." Phillippe always knew how to talk to Alexander, and his father's words were nothing but the truth, truth that Alexander couldn't deny. Luca's coldness in his demeanor along with the chilling messages he received—it all pointed to something far deeper and more dangerous than what Alexander had imagined. But knowing cutting ties would be the right thing to do, Alexander still couldn't shake off the feeling, a pull that defied all logic. He was a force that Alexander felt inexorably drawn toward, even if it meant risking everything. "I'm sorry, you are right, I will stop with this curiosity." Alexander finally said, his voice measured. Philippe exhaled slowly, his gaze softening for just a moment. "Curiosity is just a phase, you will get through it." --- As the night deepened, Alexander slipped out of the estate, his heart heavy with the weight of his father's warnings and his own uncertainty. The streets of Paris were quieter now, the soft glow of streetlights casting long shadows along the cobblestones. He found himself at the familiar docks where he had met Luca. The same tension filled the air, but this time, it was mixed with the weight of everything left unsaid between them. Luca was waiting for him, standing by the water's edge. His dark coat blended with the night, and his expression was unreadable, as always. "I figured you'd come," Luca said quietly, his voice carrying over the sound of the lapping waves. Alexander approached, his chest tightening with everything he wanted to say but couldn't. "We need to talk." Luca turned slightly, his sharp gaze locking onto Alexander. "I've been thinking the same." A moment of silence fell between them, and Alexander almost said what he had rehearsed thousands of times on the way to the pier. This was a mistake, we need to right what's wrong and cut it off. But instead, something else came out of his mouth. "If this is going to work, I need you to follow some rules," Alexander said, his voice quiet but stern. Luca's jaw tightened, yet his eyes lightened. "I almost thought your logical intelligence finally came back to kick me out of your head," he let out a smile, "And I thought mine was back too." Alexander stepped closer, his gaze unwavering. "I guess we've both gone a bit crazy." He lifted his hand toward Luca's face, then forcefully wiped the bottom of his chin. "First rule, no blood where I can see it." Luca's heart raced, adrenaline rushed into his veins like it hadn't before. He absolutely wants Alex, needs Alex, even if it's the most irrational decision he's ever made.
